Effect of Enhanced Financial Transparency on Foreign Aid Captured by Elites
Žalman, Jan ; Palanský, Miroslav (advisor) ; Janský, Petr (referee)
This thesis estimates the capture of foreign aid in developing countries, where elites divert the aid intended for economic growth and poverty reduction to offshore bank deposits in tax havens. Using publicly available data, we analyze the relationship between aid disbursements and offshore deposits and find that while the aid capture persists since 1990, the enhanced financial transparency has had a diminishing impact. We also investigate the role of portfolio invest- ment and corruption, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues to ensure effective aid redistribution. Our findings suggest that the individu- als benefiting from the flow of funds to tax havens during aid disbursements are likely ruling elites, highlighting the need for greater transparency in aid distribution. Democracy promotion aims to force or encourage a foreign state to become more democratic. This includes direct democracy assistance, or direct financial aid or training to the electoral arena, government and civil society, but also rhetorical commitments, political gestures, information dissemination, sanctions, conditionality and through "soft power" - cultural ties and their significance in promoting European values. The Diploma Thesis EU democracy promotion in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa: the case study of South Sudan examines these strategies as they were used by EU actors in democracy promotion in South Sudan. South Sudan is the youngest country in the world, and the EU, both in terms of EU institutions and member states has aided the country in its uneasy development to become a democratic state. How EU actors attempted to accomplish this, and how have these strategies changed between 2011 and 2020 is the focus of the research. The thesis comes to the conclusion, that the EU used a top- down approach, engaging more with government and other state institutions than with civil society. It also focused on developing good governance and rule of law, together with enhancing socio-economic sectors. The EU also promoted democracy in South Sudan through regional organisations, the IGAD, and the...

Barešová, Lenka ; Matějček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Bartoš, Jan (referee)
The main objective of the thesies is to compare a frontal teaching method and teaching by simulation. Two comparable groups of students were taught the same topic by the two methods. The topic was focused on an uneven world development. Following assumptions were set. Simulation is a more attractive teaching form, therefore it can help to raise the motivation of students. Frontal method is capable of transmitting more information. Simulation, however, can have bigger impact on students' values. The impact of simulation has a long-term impact in comparison to frontal teaching. These assumptions were confirmed by qualitative and quantitative methods.
