TITLE: Verbal communication competences of Roma pupils as a condition for their school success AUTHOR: Mgr. Marie Opálková SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Helena Hejlová, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The subject of this dissertation is the school success of Roma pupils at the beginning of primary education and the obstacles that Roma pupils encounter in this period. The aim of the dissertation is to find out how the verbal-communicative competences of Roma pupils are influenced by the communicative language in the family and what influence it has on the pupil's school success. This main objective has been operationalised into individual partial objectives, which correspond in their nature to the linguistic levels of communicative competence and define a specific dimension of the investigation. A qualitative case study approach characterized by a combination of different information gathering techniques was used to process data from Roma pupils. It was mainly observation, interviews and document analysis - namely of the results of the Battery of Tests to determine the status of the linguistic levels of Czech among Roma pupils in the first grade. Understanding of Majority Language and Romani language among preschool population

This thesis is devoted to the issue of understanding Romani and the majority languages by Romani preschoolers in order to consider the possibility of introducing Romani language in schools. Also it analyses the influence of using Romani language on the ability to perform age-appropriate tasks by Roma preschoolers. The work is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical part presents a summary of the relevant works on school failure of Romani children with an emphasis on their language handicap. We also pay attention to the theory of language shift, language code, and subtractive bilingualism. In the second, empirical part a primary research is carried out examining the degree of understanding Romani and majority languages in three locations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. As a methodology, a mixed research design was chosen. It was divided into two phases. During the first phase a field research was conducted, followed by quantitative evaluation of tasks performed by the Romani preschoolers in the second phase. Research has shown, that there are different linguistic situations in the surveyed locations and therefore no generic measure can be introduced. Sexual and excretory vocabulary and contexts of its usage in Romani

This thesis deals with usage of special vocabulary - "sexual and excretion" - in different contexts in a Roma community in Rokycany. This thesis is actually analysis and it focuses on searching for equivalences and differences in Romani language. The author compares these expressions with Czech language as well. The sexual and excretion vocabulary is used in different contexts and it is often used in tabooed situations. The usage of those linguistic instruments depends on a speaker's status in the community. Development of young gypsies´positive identity in leisure time

This thesis deals with an identity of young Romanies. About its development, meaning and importance when searching for oneself. To understand the significance of finding the Romanian youth´s identity, it is essential to get familiar with their culture, traditions, way of life etc. In the theoretical part it is possible to find the topic of personal development with relation to free time, its importance with creating a personality and educational methods applied to working with Romanian youth coming out of {\clq}qgood experience``. The practical part focuses on fieldwork. The research is a verification of hypotheses that were set at the beginning of the work. The next part of the research are new facts that have been found by the author during the realization of the research in fieldwork. This work is supposed to provide an educationalist a complex view of the problems connected with the identity development of the Romanian identity.
