The First Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus and Its Effect on the Escalation of the Greco-Turkish Ethnic Conflict

The First Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus and its Effect on the Greco-Turkish Ethnic Conflict Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of the first Cypriot constitution of 1960 on the following inter-ethnic violence, which broke out in 1963. Explanation of all the relevant political crises of the early Cypriot Republic right until the meltdown of the constitutional system, provides for a wider context in which a line can be drawn between the provisions stated by the constitution and the resulting local Greco-Turkish ethnic conflict. The first half of this thesis comprises a rather theoretical view of the constitution, whose certain articles are cited whenever needed. It also includes some information about the historical and political background, summing up the causes behind the proclamation of independence itself, as well as the final shape of many controversial provisions offered by the constitution. The second half sheds some light on the complex political crises caused in part by the reluctance of both national communities to co-operate when governing the state, in part by the very system outlined by the constitution. The Republic of Cyprus as a specific member of the European Union

The aim of this diploma thesis is to characterize the most important specifics of the Cyprusʹ membership in the European union and to describe the influence of these specifics on the relationship of Cyprus and EU or the relationship of Cyprus or EU to other states. The most important specifics are related to the so called "cyprus problem" because the island has been divided into Greek and Turkish part since 1964. The whole island is reprezented by the Greek Cypriots only and acquis communautaire is exercised only the Greek part. This work deals first with relations between the Republic of Cyprus, Turkey and the European Union. The next chapter deals with the Cyprus problem, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the role of the European Union in the solving of the Cyprus problem. The last chapter examines the relationship between Cyprus and Russia and the influence of this relationship on the relationship between Cyprus and the EU.
The Position of Cyprus in the EU

This bachelor's thesis researches the position of the Republic of Cyprus in the European Union. It consists of three chapters. The first chapter describes Cyprus as a country that is divided into two parts, yet has become an EU member state. The chapter focuses on previous and current efforts for reunification of Cyprus; the process of adoption of the euro in Cyprus and the Cyprus presidency of the Council of the EU are mentioned as well. The second chapter compares Cyprus and the other EU member states using geographic, demographic, political and primarily economic indicators from before the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008. The last chapter studies changes in these indicators after 2008, and briefly describes the Cyprus' macroeconomic adjustment programme.

Cyprus: the politico-economic aspects of the island in the context of the European integration

This thesis deals with politico-economic aspects of the island, through which the Greco-Turkish relations affects the formation of international relations in the world. The first chapter briefly captures the historical and political developments from antiquity to the present. The second chapter describes the politico-economic aspects of the Cyprus Republic and its efforts to integrate into European structures. The third part of this thesis focuses on the politico-economic aspects of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the issue of its international recognition. The last chapter of this thesis is devoted to attempts to resolve the Cyprus issue and the possibilities for the future direction of the island.
