Non-sporting Topics on TV Studios of ČT sport and TV Nova During the World Cup 2022

Bachelor thesis Non-sporting Topics on TV Studios of ČT sport and TV Nova during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 deals with non-sporting topics in the pre-match studios of ČT sport and TV Nova during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. The selected pair of media outlets represent the only owners of the broadcasting rights for the the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 in the Czech Republic. It is also a comparison of sport's broadcasting on public and commercial TV. The research is conducted during the entire course of the football championship, that is all pre-match studios of both TV stations from 20th November to 18th December 2022. The theoretical part focuses on the position of sport and football in media. It also describes selected non-sporting topics from the history of sports journalism as well as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. The quantitative content analysis identifies and compares the total time spent debating non-sporting topics with the rest of the sports discussion. It also follows the incidence and frequency of non-sporting topics on ČT sport and TV Nova. The qualitative content analysis attempts to describe the process of these non-sporting discussions and tries to find similarities or differences in the way they are conducted.

Media coverage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 in ČT sport

This bachelor thesis deals with one of the most important global sporting events. Specifically, it examines the media coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in ČT Sport. Using two sub-quantitative content analyses, the aim of this bachelor thesis is to determine what space was devoted to the 2022 FIFA World Cup on the ČT sport channel between 14 November 2022 and December 2022 (the week before the start of the championship and the week after the end of the championship), whether the 46 pre-match studios on ČT sport, which cover the televised matches of the World Cup in Qatar, give more space to the favourite teams or whether all teams are given similar space, and whether the controversial background of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is highlighted in the pre-match studios of ČT sport and, if so, in what context. The results of the analysis of the ČT sport programme showed that out of the 1 136 televised TV programmes in the defined period, 395 programmes were devoted to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. This shows that exactly 30 % of the programmes, which were broadcast during the specified period, focused directly on the events of the Qatar championship. Al Jazeera versus Al Arabiya

Diploma thesis "al Jazeera versus al Arabiya - Media Rivalry of Qatar and Saudi Ruling Families during the 2006 Lebanon War" deals with domestic Arab satellite channels - Qatar al Jazeera and Saudi al Arabiya - and their way of reporting about the war in Lebanon in 2006. Their news coverage is put into context of rivalry between Qatar and Saudi ruling families. The thesis focuses on wide range of issues including the role of media in foreign policy of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, use of media for securing stability of the ruling regimes and for pursuing their regional influence. Main theoretical concept of the thesis is the Arab media model which enables projection of interests of the ruling families in Qatar and Saudi Arabia into their media.

Uprising in Libya: "The Al-Jazeera Effect"

The bachelor thesis Uprising in Libya: "The Al-Jazeera Effect" uses a quantitative analysis to examine the relationship the Czech printed media has towards the Arab news network Al Jazeera. The preliminary theoretical part is divided into three sections. In the first section, the author presents Al Jazeera as an important actor in the regional and global television news market. The second section summarizes the findings about two interesting phenomenons that aren't unanimously accepted by academic literature - the so called "CNN effect" and the "Al Jazeera effect". The third section then reflects on the current quantitative research that deals with Al Jazeera's news coverage. The core of this thesis rests solely on the quantitative research. The author focused on key events that could be expected to increase the references to the Al Jazeera network. Therefore, the thesis examined two twelve month periods in which international news outlets informed of the events related to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001, and of the development of anti-regime uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa collectively labeled as the Arab Spring in 2011. Breaking free from the dominance and establishing independent policy: The analysis of Saudi-Qatari relations and its implications on the region of the Persian Gulf

The main topic of the thesis Breaking Free from the Dominance and Establishing Independent Policy: The Analysis of Saudi-Qatari Relations and its Implications on the Region of the Persian Gulf is a thorough analysis of the historical developments of bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar. This hierarchical relationship between the two states is analysed according to the theories of alliance formation, MENA foreign policy analyses and international hierarchy. The aim of the thesis is to ascertain how Qatar was able to break free from the subordinate position within the hierarchical relationship with Saudi Arabia. Contrary to other existing research within the field which explains the end of subordination mostly with the crisis in the dominant state, the present thesis addresses other possible factors in the subordinate state that ultimately cause the evasion of the subordination with particular emphasis on the case study in question. British reaction to the Arab Spring events in the context of United Kingdom's relations with Persian Gulf countries

The diploma thesis named British reaction to the Arab Spring events in the context of United Kingdom's relations with Persian Gulf countries is concerned with an impact of the revolutionary events of 2011, known as the Arab Spring, on bilateral cooperation between United Kingdom on one side and Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman on the other. While using quantitative analysis approach, it depicts how the Persian Gulf developments were reflected by prominent British representatives and members of the Cameron coalition government. Since the government promised to approach foreign policy matters through a liberal-conservative lens and also planned to further deepen its relations with Persian Gulf countries, the Arab Spring events can be interpreted as a clear dilemma for British policymakers. This thesis aims to answer whether such dilemma forced the government officials to re-asses the traditionally warm attitudes towards Persian Gulf and additionally, it demonstrates which spheres of their cooperation were threatened the most. Cultural Policy in Qatar and the Question of Identity

This thesis deals with Qatar's cultural policy and question of national identity. The main goal of the thesis was to analysis Qatar's foreign cultural policy and to identify its main pillars. These pillars aim to help the foreign public to build their imagination of Qatar, its culture and values. The theoretical framework of the thesis goes back to theories of public diplomacy, cultural diplomacy and nation branding. These theories define benefits of foreign cultural presentation for state and specify conditions of successful presentation. Beside that they also describe role of state and non-state actors in the process of foreign presentation and point out the most effective tools towards foreign public. The theoretical background is followed by an analysis of Qatar's public and cultural diplomacy. The analysis starts with Qatar's initial projects which include the foundation of satellite channel network al-Jazeera and opening of big education campus in Doha Education City. Further chapters concentrate on new cultural policy as it is defined by national development projects. Impact of low oil and natural gas prices on the economy of Qatar since 2014

The bachelor thesis examines the impact of the oil and gas prices slump, which befell the world in 2014, on the economy of Qatar. The main objective of the thesis is to evaluate if and to what extend the price collapse influenced the relevant economic indicators and behaviour of the state and companies active in the affected field. The selected objective is examined using the method of data comparison, namely before and after the price slump, and with the help of the case study, in which the qatari company operating in the oil and gas is examined. From the conducted analysis it is possible to conclude that Qatar was directly influenced by the oil and gas prices collapse: its GDP slumped, fiscal deficit increased. The analysed company also experienced troubles caused by low prices: one year after the price slump, total amount of assigned tenders to company decreased substantially and historically high number of tenders was cancelled. Conclusions deriving from the thesis might be applied to other oil and gas export economies in the Persian Gulf, for fundamental traits of such economies are shared with the economy of Qatar.
