Comparison of punk music subgenres

This thesis deals with the thematic definition of subgenres of punk music and their comparison. Theoretical part consists of the definition of the concept of culture and several other selected terms. A subculture will be defined as a theoretical unit, which is followed by a historical basis for the punk subculture itself. In addition, the theoretical part deals with the relationship of punk music to left-wing extremism and outlines the beginnings of punk music in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. The practical part is based on interviews with interpreters, of which three selected interviews are presented. The thesis also defines the subgenres themselves and defines their thematic content. These subgenres are then compared at their thematic level and the themes common to all sub-genres are defined.

SLOVAKIAN PROBE. Negotiation of local identity of alternative bands in Moravian Slovácko.

The goal of this musical anthropology qualitative research, mainly based on the field work, is to describe, analyze and interpret the process of construction of local identity of an alternative bands in Moravian Slovácko. The subject of this research are mainly two music bands from Slovácko - PSCrew and 12:PIET. PSCrew band represents hip-hop style and 12:PIET ranks among punk style bands. The musical production of these bands is defined (using an emic term) as an alternative folklore. With a use of theoretical concepts of stereotype and partially also retro and revival, I tried to demonstrate how these alternative musicians with an emphasis to their authenticity by the means of their musical spheres (so called soundscapes) pursue their notion of what is considered to be related to Slovácko and how the negotiation of their local identity is involved. For that the locally defined stereotypes are often used. These are typically recontextualized by its adaptation into the form that reflects the postmodern period.

The totalitarian regime influence on music production in CSSR betveen 1968 - 1989

This diploma thesis deals with the influence of the totalitarian regime on musical production in Czechoslovakia between 1968 and 1989. The aim is to explore various ways which the communist regime used to regulate or prevent the propagation of selected musical genres. The power of the totalitarian regime is shown in specific cases, such as censorship, preventing concerts, physical attacts during performances, arrests, artificial processes, media influence, nationwide actions against musicians or music bands, state institutions, etc. The work shoes how the communist regime avoided accepting any independent behavior in the society. At the same time, there are analyzed both articles in the media and state security reports, etc., and some texts reflecting political events in the particular period and current professional work on this topic. The diploma thesis on the theme "Clothing as a report" is divided into two parts, namely theoretical and practical. he aim of the work is to analyze what clothes are meant for man and what importance people attribute to him. It focuses on the emergence and importance of fashion and subculture. For the most part, he deals with punk subculture. In the practical part will be created a set of photographs, responding to the theme of the diploma thesis.

Is Punk Dead?

Tato práce se zabývá proměnou punkové subkultury v českém prostředí od konce 70. let do současnosti. Zaměřuje se především na změnu životních hodnot a kontextu se zlomovým bodem, za který je označován pád komunismu. Je zde analyzován vývoj subkultury, která se rodí ve pojených státech amerických 70. letech, odkud se rozšířila do celého světa. Je typická odporem ke konzumní společnosti, válkám, nacismu, korporacím a hlavně nesvobodě. Mezi roky a 1977 se punk dostává i do tehdejšího Československa, kde v kontextu vlády komunistické strany dostává nový rozměr. Práce popisuje rozpor mezi příslušníky komunity a veřejností, kterou jsou tito lidé označování za závadovou a nebezpečnou mládež. Subkultura se potýká s represemi a omezeními až do pádu socialismu začnou vznikat nové odnože, souvislosti se společenským vývojem roste nová tvář subkultury, která se již zabývá konkrétnějšími problémy, jako jsou práva zvířat, či plýtvání. V analýzu použit kvalitativní výzkum ve formě zúčastněného pozorování a rozhovorů se zástupci současné i původní vlny. Rozhovory napovídají, že objektem zájmu je stále pojem "svoboda" a k proměně dochází spíše v konkrétních terých se této hodn příslušníci subkultury dožadují. "God Save the Queen": History of the Punk in the Iron Ladyʼ Era (1975-1990)

The thesis focuses on the analysis of the relations between the punk movement and Thatcherism. It explores the roots both of Thatcherism and punk in the seventies and eighties. Next it examines the social and economic crisis of Britain in these years and its consequences on the thinking of the youth and Conservatives. It show both movements had common starting- points and to a certain extent even conclusions. The thesis the focuses on punk's effect on politics and its perception by the society. It also analyses the political background in the second half of 1970s and the victory of Margaret Thatcher in the 1979 election. The last part of the thesis discusses the second punk generation and its perception of Thatcherism. In the end it examines the political conversion of old punkers.

Hardcore as a critical perspective

This work deals with ideological trends in Czech hardcore scene. In the theoretical part it reflects the historical development of concept of subcultures from the beginning until now. Following with an explanation why it is preferable to describe hardcore with the concept of the scene. The next chapter is dedicated to the history of hardcore and tries to explain the specific ethos of the times in which hardcore was born. It also serves as a contextualization of the whole phenomena. The empirical part focuses on specific themes of hardcore ideology in Czech environment without losing sight of their roles in the past. This method tries to present hardcore more like a process than some closed phenomena stuck in time. The evolution and reflection of individual themes is important if hardcore should still be considered relevant, and thus critical and able to perceive social processes. Hardcore has started as a certain reaction to reflect the era and these characteristics are considered its roots. It was not a homogenous movement, and still is not to this day. We need to be well versed in hardcore to see its potential as a critique of the society, and the concept of "the little underground" provides a good starting point. Women's Role in the History of Czech Punk

Diplomová práce zkoumá roli žen v historii českého punku. V úvodní části práce je popsána historie a vývoj punku ve světě. V této části jsou vysvětleny významy pojmu punk jako subkultura (v terminologii pozdějších výzkumů scéna) a punk jako hudební žánr. Popsána jsou specifika ženské punkové módy a stylu. Jsou uvedeny role, ve kterých se ženy v punkové scéně realizují a typické ženské role v hudebních skupinách. Součástí teoretické části práce je stručný popis historie punku na území České republiky a zapojení žen v české punkové scéně. Jako jeden z hlavních zdrojů při vypracování diplomové práce byly využity rozhovory vedené metodou odvozenou od metodologie orální historie. Dílčím cílem práce bylo ověření použitelnosti analytického programu Atlas.ti pro analýzu orálně-historických interview. Tento software byl využit pro analýzu výzkumných rozhovorů. Druhá polovina práce se zabývá interpretací témat obsažených v rozhovorech. Věnuje se specifickým oblastem života v souvislosti s punkovou subkulturou jako jsou důvody, které přivedly ženy k punku, role přátel a vztahů, setkání punkového myšlení s autoritou v podobě rodičů a školy.
