Health literacy among drug users
Rolová, Gabriela ; Gabrhelík, Roman (advisor) ; Lukavská, Kateřina (referee) ; Popesko, Boris (referee)
Background: Individuals with substance use disorders are likely to have low health literacy due to risk factors related to their personal and socioeconomic characteristics. Current knowl- edge is limited in understanding whether low health literacy contributes to adverse health outcomes and whether it influences the substance use behavior of this population. Design: An exploratory cross-sectional study using a questionnaire survey. Aims: To explore multidimensional health literacy and its correlates in patients treated in residential addiction treatment programs and investigate health literacy as a predictor of self- reported health indicators and quality of life. Setting: Multiple residential addiction treatment programs (i.e., detoxification units, inpatient care, therapeutic communities) in the Czech Republic. Participants: Data of 613 patients treated in residential addiction treatment programs for mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substance use (F10-F19, ICD-10) were analyzed. Measurements: Health literacy was measured using the Czech version of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q47). Data on participants' socioeconomic characteristics, self-reported health indicators and quality of life, substance use behavior, and treatment experiences were...
Securitising biology: Biological threats and state preparedness in the wake of a pandemic
Artico, Chiara ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Butler, Eamonn (referee)
64053643 SECURITISING BIOLOGY: BIOLOGICAL THREATS AND STATE PREPAREDNESS IN THE WAKE OF A PANDEMIC ABSTRACT The management of infectious diseases in the realm of public health has shown increasingly overlapping areas with biological warfare preparedness. While the acknowledgement of these common elements is not only frequent but also codified in an international treaty and subject to distinct regulations, research into how these two fields connect is scarce. Potential deliberate use of biological weapons typically leads to intense political mobilisation and ensuing dedication of financial resources. Contrarily, the management of health crises over the last decades has been severely flawed, and no country in the world is considered fully prepared to a pandemic, according to the Global Health Security Index. The current COVID-19 pandemic has recently been further proof of the inadequacy of state-level prevention and preparedness capabilities. This dissertation aims at bridging the existing conceptual gap and policy divide between biological warfare and infectious disease preparedness, and to analyse elements that can be mutually applicable and potentially beneficial. It will do so by establishing analytical equivalence between the securitisation of an artificial biothreat and a nature-borne infectious disease...
Tobacco control in the CR and Canada aimed especially at socioeconomic, political and environmental aspects
Fraser, Keely ; Králíková, Eva (advisor) ; Janout, Vladimír (referee) ; Lustigová, Michala (referee)
(English) Smoking is the leading cause of premature mortality and morbidity globally (WHO, 2018). Within the Czech Republic (CR) tobacco consumption ranks among the highest in the world, and tobacco control measures rank among the poorest globally (Joossens and Raw, 2014; American Cancer Society, 2018). Smoking related chronic diseases and the loss of active part of life are an enormous and growing burden on the Czech system. There is urgency to invest in efforts that will control and decrease the demand for tobacco products (OECD, 2017). Experiences and lessons learned in tobacco control (TC) by other countries, such as Canada, may provide valuable insight to help guide Czech decision makers in identifying policy best buys moving forward. The basic research carried out as part of this PhD project focuses specifically on a comparison of TC in Canada and the CR. It also includes: 1) a national cross-sectional survey of all organizations involved in TC to describe capacity and involvement in TC measures outlined by the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) (Fraser et al. 2019); 2) a prospective cohort study which describes the results of intensive smoking cessation treatment offered by Centers for Tobacco Dependent (CTD) (Králiková et al. 2014); 3) a cross sectional survey of patients...
Health literacy in the Czech population - factors related to phases of health information processing
Polcrová, Anna ; Kučera, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Žejglicová, Kristýna (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the topic of health literacy level in the Czech population and its association with sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. The aim was to describe this association in the stages of health information processing, which are the stages of finding, understanding, judging and application of health information. The data from the Czech modification of the HLS-EU survey from 2014 was used. Lower level of health literacy was associated with older age, lower level of education, as well as lower self-assessed social status at all stages of health information processing. Lower self- assessed health condition was also associated with lower level of health literacy, especially in the phases of understanding and application of health information. Regarding the lifestyle factors, the association was determined in case of physical activity, most notably in the phases of understanding and application of health information. The association was also determined in the case of body mass index, but only in phases understanding and judging. Differences in health literacy levels between smoking categories as well as between gender were not been determined. Regarding the difference between phases of health information processing, the judging of health information seems to be the most risk.
The Street Over the River: Mediation Between Hygiene and Urbanism Through Drawing in the City of Porto
Marques da Silva, Mariana
Urban transformations were developed in the city of Porto during the second half of the 19th century, particularly between 1870-1890, when the street Mouzinho da Silveira was planned and built. Aspiring to accelerated mobility, the knowledge of military engineering in topography was applied to the planning of infrastructures such as streets, bridges, railways and tunnels in order to reconfigure entrances and circuits between the main centres of activity (downtown and uptown). Meanwhile, overpopulation and disease required medical-based knowledge about epidemiology and public health to improve inhabited spaces. In juxtaposition, the city intersected these spheres, creating complex spatial models and new policies to control human activities. This environmental change was multifocal in European cities and solutions were devised in Lisbon, Paris and London. Considering its particular influence, it is intended to acknowledge the specific way this input was achieved and applied according to the specific conditions of Porto.
