Peace Settlement of Territorial Dispute: Ecuador-Peru case study
Rigó, Michael ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
This thesis analyses the peace process between Ecuador and Peru and stimulates discussion in the field of conflict resolution. On Monday, October 26th, 1998, President of Peru Alberto Fujimori and Ecuador Jamil Mahuad Witt signed an international agreement that ended more than 150 years lasting territorial conflict. A series of hostile acts and armed conflicts have accompanied these neighbouring states for decades. Four states became the guarantor of the peace treaty: Brazil, the United States, Argentina and Chile. Complicated negotiations began in 1995 after a short war on the Cenepa River. The negotiating teams of the guaranteeing states used various mediation strategies, including the organization of negotiations, sanctions and financial incentives. The aim of this qualitative case study is an analysis of the causes of successful mediation performed by the guaranteeing states. The research follows the theoretical part, which describes the so-called contingency approach and ripeness theory.
Government Policies of Isolated Indigenous Peoples and their Successes and Failures
Scholz, Eric ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
Since the expansion of globalization and the mapping of the world, mostly by Europeans, there has been a massive shift in the ways of life for many groups throughout the world. When these groups met each other one, often the Europeans, the almost always more technologically advanced group, dominated the others and brought them into a globalizing world. After centuries of this, some of these groups continue to exist in their traditional lifestyles, having not been integrated into Europeanized societies or the globalized world, and often still living, quite literally, naked in the hinterlands. This research offers a unique analysis as to how these groups are treated by modern societies, with emphasis on their legal status and protections, and the material outcome of these policies. This includes things like if the groups were successfully integrated, or if they are suffering from pollution, violence, discrimination, or other factors. Three case studies are chosen: India, Peru, and Brazi, for their unique positions in being home to many of these groups.
Contamination of Peruvian drinking water by arsenic and boron - origin, properties and treatment
Sadloň, Matúš ; Stejskal, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Cencarová, Vendula (referee)
Excessive arsenic and boron concentrations determined in natural waters within the Department of Tacna in southern Peru are associated with active Andean volcanism, being further exacerbated by the ongoing mining activity in the area. Both arsenic and boron concentrations at five investigated sites significantly exceed the maximum permissible limits determined by the World Health Organisation and the Peruvian legislation for drinking water, thus affecting the health and wellbeing of the local population. Due to the remoteness of the area of interest, which lacks infrastructure, skilled human resources as well as capital, Photon Water Technology s.r.o. has come up with a solution based on the use of small water treatment plants operating on the principle of reverse osmosis in combination with a commercial remediation product Katalox Light® . This product enables the formation of alkaline conditions needed for proper complexation of boron into B(OH)4 - (aq), which is better remediated by the proposed technology. Reverse osmosis can remediate arsenic, although the efficiency of As removal depends on the chemical composition of natural waters at the investigated sites. Laboratory experiments have been focused to prove the viability of Katalox Light® for enhancing the rate of boron removal within the designed...
