Crisis preparedness plan of Itibo medical facility.
ZDRAŽIL, Vladimír
Crisis management is a dynamic science. This is particularly true for developing world countries like Kenya. The aim of this work is to contribute to the prevention or minimization of risks and possibly to manage their consequences within the project of the Czech medical facility Itibo in the southwestern part of Kenya. This facility, thanks to a group of enthusiasts and support of many people, helped tens of thousands of patients since 2005 who would otherwise not have access to health care. In the framework of the thesis, a risk analysis was elaborated based on a local survey, which was subsequently evaluated, and its results used to create a "Plan of preparedness for emergencies." The plan is a practically applicable tool for managing non-standard situations that occur relatively frequently in the project site. An essential part was the active involvement of the author in the actual functioning of the Itibo healthcare facility in the form of an internship. The main benefit of the work is a plan intended for health-educated persons, who mostly do not have knowledge in the field of crisis management. The benefit is also an insight into the issue of crisis management in the area of health care in another country, which is very different in most of its parameters.

Trojanová, Jana ; Trávníčková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Žáková, Gabriela (referee)
Truth commissions are official nonjudicial bodies of investigation created to address grave violations of human rights committed under the previous repressive regime or during the past armed conflict. Commissions are created to establish an authoritative record of past violations, to discover its causes and to make reccommendations in order to prevent its reccurence in the future. The thesis focuses on commission's mandates, legal documents that determine its goals, functions, powers and scope of inquiry. The aim of the thesis is to assess the significance of the mandate in the truth-seeking process and to determine if a broad mandate is well suited to achieve goals of the commission or if a narrow mandate is more expedient. The thesis assesses and compares mandates of truth commissions established in Argentina (1983), South Africa (1995), Guatemala (1997) and Kenya (2009).

The Involvement of the International Criminal Court in Investigating Crimes outside Armed Conflict
Patková, Lucie ; Werkman, Kateřina (advisor) ; Pulgret, Miroslav (referee)
The thesis deals with the question, in which situation the International Criminal court would probably open an Investigation of such crimes by an international body is a delicate question mainly with regard to a great extend of intervention into a state sovereignty, which manifests itself also as jurisdictional sovereignty. The thesis focuses on the case of Kenyan post-election violence in years of 2007 and 2008 and the aim to suppress Libyan revolution of 2011. Besides, the work is based upon the theory of (liberal) institutionalism, which could hopefully be applied to the international-law case of investigation of the crimes committed outside an armed conflict. Within the framework of the thesis I try to reveal criteria determining whether the International Criminal court opens or not an investigation to a situation of human rights abuse. For the purpose I take into consideration world and local country status, character of the perpetrators, extend of the attacks, country's relation to the great powers, as well as readiness of the country to prosecute the perpetrators within the national jurisdiction. As conclusion I try t compare the findings from the part applying liberal institutionalism and from the case studies.
The British colonial government in Kenya and the Mau Mau uprising
Tauchmanová, Barbora ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Pečenka, Marek (referee)
This bachelor thesis British colonial government in Kenya and the Mau Mau uprising describes the most important measures taken by the British colonial government during the State of Emergency in Kenya (1952-1960), outlines the British point of view on Kenya and through several examples attempts to analyze the extent of autonomy of the British colonial administration in Kenya. The State of Emergency was declared in 1952 in order to protect the white settlers in Kenya and to quickly crush the uprising of the anti-colonial militant Mau Mau movement, which was formed mainly by the members of the Kikuyu tribe. Although the dispute used to be perceived as a racial struggle of Africans against Europeans, it was in fact an internal fight in the Kikuyu tribe incited by the measures taken by the British colonial government. This thesis looks into the events in Kenya during the 1950s in four main chapters. First chapter presents the colony's development up to 1952 and the historic introduction follows up with the second chapter. Second chapter should answer the question of which measures have been taken against Mau Mau and describes the most important operations and programmes that have influenced the course of the State of Emergency. Third chapter contains a short outline of the British point of view on the...

The Role of Kenyan Woman
Beranová, Zuzana ; Kropáček, Luboš (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee) ; Horáková, Hana (referee)
What is the life of Kenyan women like? In Kenya, like many African countries, a deep paradox has been created. Kenyan women enjoy the benefits of modern life, yet their lives are largely determined by customary law. Although the majority of Kenyan women do not live in traditional society, they are still perceived within their traditional roles. Modern society has different requirements than the traditional ones, however only the segment of -self-confident and informed citizens are aware of their rights and are able to assert their rights. While women compose the majority of the Kenyan population (52%) and play an active role in the development of the whole society, Kenya still continues to remain a deep patriarchal society with a very low regard of the status of women. Women in Kenya are unequal and under-privileged in most areas of their lives. This situation is propounded by the current legal and political system, as well as by prevailing socio-cultural factors. The dissertation examines the different roles of the Kenyan woman - as a daughter, a wife and a mother. The main philosophical ideology which the African society is based upon is the continuation of life and keeping the patrilineal lineage where dead ancestors play the same role as children born to the family. It is presumed that women who play an...

An analysis attends, besides basic characteristics of a political system, to politico-historical development with emphasis on elections and postelection regime changes. It also examines specific internal attributes of the political system and long-term factors, which can affect process of democratization. Initial hypothesis is verified on the basis of proposed findings. Keywords democratization, hybrid regimes, Kenya
