Historical use of waste from the Jáchymov uranium factory as a building material
Voháňková, Michaela ; Goliáš, Viktor (advisor) ; Šálek, Ondřej (referee)
Between 1853 and 1939, colourful and highly sought-after uranium paints were produced on an industrial scale in Jáchymov. Until the discovery of radium by Marie Curie Skłodowska in 1898, the waste from production was considered essentially worthless. In the 1970s, the use of materials with increased radioactivity was detected in buildings in Jáchymov. Some of the most affected buildings were demolished. In the 1990s, remediation interventions took place during which these building materials (plaster and mortar) were removed from most of the buildings. During this period, gamma radiation doses as well as radioactivity and uranium were measured in the laboratory. The mineralogical and phase character of the material was not investigated, which was the main objective for this bachelor thesis. The presumption of preservation of at least some of the surviving houses was minimal. Nevertheless, a few unique cases have been found. A total of 11 buildings were found along a 12 km tour whose plaster showed elevated radioactivity ranging from 3.2 to 28.4 μGy/h. Sampling was carried out at 6 of them. Determination of 226 Ra mass activities was performed by laboratory gamma spectrometry, uranium contents were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. In the study set, the radium activities reached...
The topic of labor camps at uranium mines in the teaching of geography (using Jáchymov and Příbram as an example)
Zavřelová, Aneta ; Jelen, Jakub (advisor) ; Boudný, Zdeněk (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on geography teaching methods at elementary and high schools in Jáchymov and Příbram regions. The first part of the thesis analyze how geography is being taught at elementary and high schools, based on the curriculum framework and textbook research. Next, there is a chapter with a focus on the labor camps from the point of view of geography. The thesis also contains analysis of the researched locations, especially their mining history. The next section of the bachelor thesis discusses the socio-historical context in the 1950s and 1960s, uranium as the key raw material of the Cold War, labor camps and their characteristics and the inmates' daily routine. The practical part of the thesis is represented by questionnaire research conducted at the elementary and high schools and its results. Labor camps in the Jáchymov region in interdisciplinary history - geography relations
Leitgeb, Vojtěch ; Jelen, Jakub (advisor) ; Tůmová, Martina (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with student's ability to work with selected types of historical and modern sources to navigate them in chosen space. The first part of the thesis introduces the oral history method, which is demonstrated here through the testimony of eyewitnesses. Furthermore, the characteristics of distance education in the context of the recent covid-19 pandemic are elaborated. In the second part of the thesis, a worksheet is presented, which was supplemented with one additional source in the research part, based on the evaluation from the pilot investigation, but the character of the tasks was maintained. The thesis concludes with a summary of the results obtained in the research of this thesis and also presents the limitations of the research form used. Key words: interdisciplinary relations, area, history, geography, Jáchymov, labour camps
Usage of interdisciplinary relations of geography and historiography in teaching of the local region (using Jáchymov as an example)
Klíčová slova Mezipředmětové vztahy, místní region, zeměpis, geografie, dějepis, Jáchymov, pracovní tábory Abstract This Bachelor thesis is devoted to interdisciplinary relations of geography and historiography in teaching of the local region in secondary schools and grammar schools. The main goal of this thesis is an analysis of teaching of the local region and usage of interdisciplinary relations in schools closely connected to Jáchymov region. The secondary goal is to create a...
Bohumil Modrý and his fate in literature and media coverage
Jakubec, Dominik ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (referee)
This Bachelor thesis focuses on research of the image of Czechoslovak ice-hockey goalkeeper Bohumil Modrý in literature and contemporary print. After describing the fate of Bohumil Modrý, I focus on the analysis of contemporary daily print, namely Rudé právo, Mladá fronta and Československý sport, in which I research the amount of informations publicated in named daily print and the differences between them. While analysing the daily print, I will focus on few specific periods - 1947 and 1949 ice-hockey world championships, 1948 olympic games, March 1950 in which Bohumil Modrý and his former teammates from national ice-hockey team were arrested, October 1950 in which the court hearing took place, their release from jail in early 1955, death of Bohumil Modrý in July 1963 and rehabilitation of Modrý and his once convicted teammates in July 1968. The third part of the Bachelor thesis follows Modrý's image in the book Jáchymov by Austrian writer Josef Haslinger. It is a novel which was written with help of Bohumil Modrý's daughter Blanka and follows more different storylines, but the main one focuses on the fate of Bohumil Modrý. In this part of my Bachelor thesis I focus on comparation of the informations contained in the novel and those found in specialised literature. In the conclusion of this work,...
Interpretation of the Czech theme in the novel Jáchymov by the Austrian author Josef Haslinger
Sudová, Kristina ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Markvartová, Eva (referee)
At the beginning, this bachelor's thesis deals with labor camps in the Jáchymov region, especially the camp Barbora, and radioactive baths, which are still functional today. It also deals with two epochs of post-war Austrian literature, which include the work of Josef Haslinger, author of the analyzed novel Jáchymov, the period of social liberal consensus from 1966 to 1989 and the period after the fall of the Iron Curtain (1989 to the present) and its influence on modern Austrian literature on the last few decades. The following chapter is devoted to the author himself, who wrote the novel in 2011. A separate chapter is devoted to the main character - hockey goalkeeper Bohumil Modrý, who was unjustly arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison and a forced labor camp. The main topic is the analysis of the novel Jáchymov, the description of the characters, the plot and interpretation of Czech topics in this book, ie the political processes after the February coup in 1948, the Czechoslovak national hockey team, goalkeeper Bohumil Modrý and the Jáchymov area with forced labor camps where political prisoners had to mine in radioactive uranium mines. The work draws mainly from the novel Jáchymov and from the literary history of Wynfrid Kriegleder Eine kurze Geschichte der Literatur in Österreich,...
