An empirical analysis of liquidity situation and interbank market rates in the Czech Republic during global crisis
Lešanovská, Jitka ; Geršl, Adam (advisor) ; Horníková, Martina (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the development of the interbank market liquidity and interest rates in the Czech interbank market with special focus on the period of global crisis. We analyze determinants of the interbank interest rates and their development with respect to the key monetary policy rate. We explain the significant departure of the interbank interest rates from the key monetary policy rate (impairment of monetary policy transmission) during the global crisis by an increase in risk premia on interbank lending. The source of the risk premia is decomposed into the individual components such as liquidity risk, counterparty risk, foreign influence and other factors. Their contribution to the overall risk premia over time during the global crisis is analyzed. We find that the liquidity risk was the key determinant of tensions in the Czech interbank market in the beginning of the global crisis. However, its influence weakened over time while the role of counterparty risk increased. Keywords: interbank market, liquidity, interest rates, crisis, risk premia, credit risk, liquidity risk, counterparty risk JEL classification: G190, G210
FDI drop in Slovakia during the economic crisis (2008-2010)
Stoila, Martin ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Knutelská, Viera (referee)
The thesis discusses the causes of the sudden FDI drop in Slovakia during the economic crisis when R. Fico's government was in power. The drop came after Euro adoption, deep structural reforms and overall attractiveness of the country for the foreign investors. Mainly qualitative methods are utilized in the paper - coding was found to be the most appropriate method to analyze the reasons companies stated for leaving the country. Almost 64% of the investors mentioned crisis as the main cause of their departure. It was followed by company's strategy, the government's policies, strong currency and old machinery and technologies used in the factory. Thus, the hypothesis, which stated that the main reason for FDI plunge were policies of then government in combination with effects of economic crisis, was not confirmed.
The crisis, mergers, changes in ownership and cosolidation - the economical development of czech media companies in years 2009-2013 and cosequent change of the ownership
Beránek, Jan ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Benda, Josef (referee)
This thesis is dedicated to the significant change in media ownership in the Czech Republic which occured during the Global crisis in 2008 - 2013. In this period almost all foreign owners sold their media to the local enterpreneurs, who took over almost all media houses. This shift happened under generally less comfortable matket conditions, which have hit mostly the printed media. The local enterpreneurs are naturally much more interested in local politics. This text describes these changes and uncovers the economic reasons that led to it, including the extensive research into publicly available, yet not analysed annual reports of media companies. The conclusion is that the foreign owners generally earned well in the Czech market and that they have decided to use the crisis as a good moment to sell. The arrival of new domestic owners caused worries about their possible interference with kontent and by 2017 there are some hints suggesting that they may use the media against the opponents. But there is a fact that may prevent them: the thesis proves how worth the position on the market is. And this should at least limit these efforts.

Margins of Trade: Czech Firms Before, During and After the Crisis
Galuščák, Kamil ; Sutóris, Ivan
We investigate the extensive and intensive margins of trade of Czech firms in periods before, during and after the crisis of 2008–2009. The intensive margin explains most of the aggregate export growth in 2006–2014, which corroborates previous findings for other countries. The contribution of the extensive margin is smaller, explaining on average 39% of the aggregate export growth in 2006–2007 and around 25% to 30% of that in the post-crisis period. The lower contribution of the extensive margin may signal a lower rate of convergence of the Czech economy. The results indicate that the crisis had a more severe impact on small exporting firms and that exports to countries outside the EU gained more prominence in the post-crisis years. Our results are similar to findings from previous studies on the impact of participation in global value chains on firms’ trade. Specifically, a more negative impact of the crisis was observed for exports with higher import intensity. Overall, our results point to the importance of using disaggregated data in the analysis of countries’ export performance.
