The dissertation deals with one of the specifics of the history of the Bohemia lands in the early modern period - the conflicts between the Habsburg monarchy and the Ottoman Empire. The aim of the thesis is to create a comprehensive view of the changing relations between the Bohemian lands during the reign of Emperor Rudolph II and the countries which, during the periods of Turkish expansion into Europe, constituted a kind of barrier between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires, i.e. Transylvania, Wallachia and Moldavia. The research topic is narrowed down to the period of the so-called Long Turkish War (1591-1606) and the subsequent period until 1613 (the death of the princes of Transylvania, Sigismund Báthory and Gabriel Báthory). 1613 is thus seen as the final landmark. The dissertation consists of three parts: 1) A brief theoretical introduction. 2) In the second part, the development of political, economic, and cultural relations between the Habsburgs and the rulers of the above-mentioned countries is depicted. 3) Interpretation so-called the second life these historical events in the Romanian and Czech historiography in the culture of both these nations. Richter Musilová, Oldřiška ; Váňová, Růžena (advisor) ; Kasper, Tomáš (referee)
The Denominational School System in the Period before the Battle of the White Mountain Abstract: The Pre-White Mountain Period within the European context brought an extraordinary development to the Bohemian Latin education. The experts consider the Bohemian Latin education to be at the forefront in European development at that time. However, Latin Scholar system in this period was very closely connected to two different confessional backgrounds. In the Pre-White Mountain Period two basic Latin school systems existed in Bohemia, each with a different denominational background. On the Protestant side there were Utraquist Latin schools, existing under the direct supervision of the Prague University; on the Catholic side Jesuit grammar schools were being gradually built under the management of the Jesuit Order. Both confessional school systems formed a nourishing base for the two main religious forces that also determined the basic political powers in the country. Confessional schools enabled the religious-political powers to influence the upcoming generations and via their religious education they supported and shaped the main religious forces in Bohemia. The comparison of the two basic Latin scholar systems in the Pre-White Mountain Bohemia has identified number of common features, but also differences,...

Fejtová, Olga ; Bobková, Lenka (advisor) ; Pešek, Jiří (referee) ; Hrubá, Monika (referee)
Catholic Reformation in the Prague Towns after the Battle of White Mountain. Prague's New Town in a context of the process of the catholic confessionalisation Abstract Olga Fejtová This thesis' methodological ground is a conception of both clerical and secular politics of recatholisation in a relation to Prague's New Town within the Post-White-Mountain period as part of a process of confessionalisation, i. e catholic confessialisation, within the paradigm that was introduced into European historiography in 1980s . The recatholisation within Bohemian lands in relationship to the paradigm of confessionalisation invokes a strategy of state and clerical power. Its enforcement and exercise in political practice were illustrated by normative materials that represented attendant signs of a development of the catholic confessionalisation. The target of this thesis is firstly to describe the progress of politics concerning recatholisation in a relationship to one of Prague's towns by using contemporary decrees of both secular and clerical origin. Furthermore, it shall investigate issues echoing within and from life of the New-Prague-Town's society of the 17th century. This within both public and private spheres of burgess' life. In order to reveal a correct reflection of the whole structure of the progression...
Rakovnik 1620 Battlefield (Contribution to the Metal-Detector Prospecting of the Early Modern Battlefields)
Šámal, Zdeněk ; Matoušek, Václav (advisor) ; Vařeka, Pavel (referee)
In 2010 the Museum of T. G. M Rakovník began an archaeological survey on a large scaled area, where from 27th of October till the 5th of November 1620, military clashes between the Estates army and the allied forces of the Roman Emperor with the Catholic League took place, just before the battle on Bílá hora. The research, originally associated with the preparation of regional exhibition, grew over the years into a unique project in the field of post-Medieval military activities archaeology. It has two major pillars. First was the field survey, which also covers air prospection, which identifies remains and also offers a geodetic survey of the debris field fortifications, which the army had built. The second is the use of detector prospecting in connection with the GPS data and its subsequent projection into maps. In the past twenty years, metal detectors became a sensitive problem not only in the Czech archaeology sphere. But they are also a useful and efective tool. Experience from abroad shows that an archaeological research of battlefields can't be done without detector prospecting. So far the detector research of the Rakovník battlefield has lasted four seasons (2010-2014) and its main focus has been on finding and localising the lead bullets for firearms used in The Thirty Year War. It was...

Radiměřská, Božena ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Kubeš, Jiří (referee) ; Křížová, Markéta (referee)
"Eastern Europe" in the Mental Map of an English Traveller from the 16th to the 18th Century Abstract The thesis aims to interpret the early modern English/British travel writings about (Central) Eastern Europe. It results in the reconstruction of mental maps of the selected travellers with regard to a typology (merchants, professionals, intellectuals, clergymen, and women). The special attention is paid to the images of marginality, such as inconvenience and danger, ignorance and backwardness, exaggeration and pomp, former splendour and present lamentation, pleasant and unpleasant landscape. The primary sources comprise a selection of fifteen travel writings which are read and interpreted with respect to the development of the genre and to the broader cultural and historical context. The covering concept is a mental map conceived as an imaginary representation of space and as a tool for cultural orientation and self-identification. The reconstruction of the mental maps is performed in four steps. Firstly, by defining the subject (a traveller) within the typology. Secondly, the landmarks (centres) in the mental maps are reconstructed. Thirdly, the images of marginality are presented. Finally, the mental maps are concluded. Methodologically, the thesis is based on the interpretation and language analysis of...
