Culprits and Victims in Selected Works of Czech and Sudeten German Authors
Štillerová, Jana ; Mocná, Dagmar (advisor) ; Neumann, Lukáš (referee)
My thesis deals with the literary treatment of the question of guilt for the removal of Germans from the Czech lands after World War II. The perspectives of Czech and Sudeten German authors are often very different, but sometimes very similar, although the authors are separated not only by nationality, but also by several decades of their lives since the treatment of the topic and the time that influenced them. Řezáč's, Durych's, Körner's and Mühlberger's rendering of the subject falls in the same epoch, namely the 1950s, while Gudrun Pausewang, who, although she also lived through the displacement and could have written about it right after World War II, waited forty years to write her book. It is possible that she needed to gain some distance from the traumatic experience in order to collect her thoughts and gain some perspective on the events. The deportation is also dealt with by authors who did not personally experience it: Tučková and Bernig. One might expect Czech authors to have the same view of the issue of guilt, but this is not the case. Durych and Bernig are open, both sides speak, they also describe Germans as victims and call for dialogue and reflection. Řezáč is one-sided, tendentious, expedient, only Germans are guilty, never victims. Tučková too, but in the opposite way. Most...

Rybařová, Zuzana ; Županič, Jan (advisor) ; Rybák, David (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is focused on the relations between Czech and German residents in Cheb during the period between the world wars. The investigated issue is placed in a deeper historical context of the position of Chebsko within the Czech lands and the Czech Kingdom. Emphasis is placed on the complicated situation in connection with the province of Deutschböhmen immediately after the establishment of the independent republic on certain significant events related to the increase in the number of the Czech population after the annexation of Chebsko to Czechoslovakia as a result of the post-war peace treaty and on the growing anti-Czech attitudes after 1933 when in Germany Adolf Hitler came to power. The bachelor's thesis is primarily based on a considerable number of literary works, but also on periodicals, archive materials and some other sources. The main aim is to approximate the national conditions in the city which was predominantly German for a long time. KEYWORDS Cheb, Czechs, Germans, Czech-German relations, interwar period
Czech Immigrants in Minnesota; History and Critical Bibliography
Škopek, Jakub ; Robbins, David Lee (advisor) ; Veselá, Pavla (referee)
This thesis takes a look at the reasons for the emigration of Czechs from Bohemia to the United States and how this emigration began in earnest after the European revolutionary year of 1848. It also takes a look at the related steps and procedures emigrants took to make this journey possible. A primary focus of this report will be the Czech immigrants that settled in Minnesota; however, the initial part of this work applies generally to Czech immigration to America. The first part of the thesis examines some of the political and social circumstances in Bohemia (as well as in much of Europe generally) that were responsible for the waves of immigration that took place in the second half of the 19th century. The thesis takes a look at how the people learned about America and about the possibilities of traveling there. The thesis also examines how the journey was made from Bohemia to one of the German ports of embarkation, as well as the difficulties and risks awaiting emigrants in such cities. Finally, this section explains the tremendous impact the new changes in sea travel - from sail to steam - had on the rapid rise in the numbers of immigrants coming into the United States. In the following section, the thesis considers some of the general difficulties faced by all new immigrants once they had...
Socio-economic transformation of kicker societies and formation of football clubs in Prague cities and suburbs before The Great War
Kužel, Petr ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Kvaček, Robert (referee)
The most popular game all over the world has entered the territory of Bohemia already in the last decades of the 19th century, when especially in the cities and suburbs of Prague many Czech or German societies, engaged in new game from England called "football", was founded. Sudden and long lasting interruption of positive development of young sport by mobilization in the summer of 1914 and deep political and social changes after conflict isolated prewar events and made unique relict environment that creates the main sources for ideas of work. However chapters leaving sport performances aside and try to describe the period culminating after year 1900, when profesional player was born of student-enthusiast and when club loyalities based on nationality or social inclusion of spectator have been created. To achive a comprehensive view is also important to describe ideological orientation and economy of clubs, topography of Prague grounds or relationships between biggest clubs SK Slavia, AC Sparta, SK Viktoria Žižkov and DFC Prag, which was litmus paper of attitudes with German etnicity. Czechs and Germans in Ústí nad Labem in the 20th century. History and historiographical reflexion.
Audiová, Kristýna ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the coexistence of Czechs and Germans in Ústí nad Labem in the 20th century. In the first part of this thesis, I will focus on social and cultural aspects of Czech-German coexistence and pay attention to the associations, organisations and facilities which are depicted in the backround of historical events in the mentioned period. I also refered to the political development and changes in the composition of its population since the beginning of German colonization until 1950. The second part deals with the reflection of the current Czech-German coexistence in the region, particularly at the workplaces of the local University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně and in the projects of the Collegium Bohemicum. It also outlined how Usti nad Labem will participate in the Czech-German issues in the near future.
The position of the Prague journal(pražské listy)in the structure of czech press in the latesixties of the 19.century
Tůma, Ondřej ; Sekera, Martin (advisor) ; Krejcar, Robert (referee)
The main aim of my diploma thesis is to determine the position of newspaper called Pražský denník in context to other Czech newspapers of the second half of the sixties of the 19th century. That time was the period which represented the essential changes in development of the modern society and politics in Czech lands. Simultaneously, it is the period when the political journalism started to form. The activity of Pražský denník has not been studied in any research yet. This periodical is considered to be biased and insolvent because it is usually included into official pro- government newspapers. Such evaluation of this newspaper is done without any deeper content analysis. The interpretation of the Czech journalism, which is mainly focused on the effect of opposite newspaper (e.g. Národní listy) and had the main effect on the Czech national movement, does not pay attention to Pražský denník at all. Considering the fact that Pražský denník was published in cargo of 20 000 pieces we should not omit evaluating of this newspaper according to its effect on reader of that time. In my diploma thesis, I would like to focus on the content analysis of Pražský denník and to analyze the thematic composition and territorial focus of individual articles. My interest is also concentrated on the measure and...

Kára, Jan ; Hronová, Tereza (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
My bachelor thesis "Media stereotyping of the Czechs in the case of the National Library" explores stereotypes of Czech national identity / Czechness in the contents of Czech printed media. The media chosen are the weekly magazines Respekt and Reflex . The examined period is from 2nd March 2007 to 2nd June 2007, which means three months after the announcement of the winner of international architectural competition for the new National Library building at Letna. Qualitative content analysis method is used to define stereotypes based on the material examined. It is conceived as an interpretation of a media text. The analysis studies and interprets references found to the Czechs / the nation /the society. It examines what identity and character the chosen titles assign to the Czech nation. After that, the thesis examines the similarities and differences between the two titles. The research part is preceded by a theoretical part and a methodological part. The theoretical part explains the concepts of national identity and national character and stereotyping and describes the affair of the National Library from the point of view describing the historical problems of its premises, the course of the architectural competition and the final form of the design by Jan Kaplický. The methodological part describes the...
