Glottalization in the combination with non-syllabic prepositions in the Czech speech of Russian speakers

Glottalization, as significant irregularity of glottal pulsing, fulfils a number of linguistic functions and can occur in various contexts. This paper examines the rate of vowel-related glottalization of non-syllabic prepositions when native Russian speakers read Czech speech. In Czech, just like in other languages there is a relatively high frequency of glottalization. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that could influence it. The speakers produced a short read text which contained 59 potential neslabičné prepositions where glottalization could occur in standard pronunciation. The basic set of the perceptual analysis and statistical processing consisted of 582 items. The rate of glottalization in individual speakers ranged from 0 % to 90 % , where the average volume is regulary based at 49 %. Statistical significance of differences in the frequency of the analyzed groups created on the basis of monitored aspects were calculated using the chi-square test.
Theoretical Aspects of the Czech Textbook for Ukrainian Speakers - Level A1 CEFR

The recent political and economic changes in Ukraine aroused interest in studying foreign languages. Though Czech is a language with a relatively small number of speakers, it has a substantial audience of learners in Ukraine. Among the reasons, one can surely mention close cultural and political relations between both countries and traditionally attractive image of the Czech republic as a target country for the Ukrainian migrants. The doctoral thesis meets the learning needs of a target group, which is currently being short of relevant learning materials of Czech. Beforehand it concerns adult learners studying Czech as a foreign language for strictly practical reasons (not as a subject of a high school curriculum), with a great deal of autonomy in their studying. The profile of the target group specifies the main parameters of the language textbook outlined in the doctoral thesis. Beside the general and particular theory of designing language textbooks, the following problems are also discussed: studying of close relative languages, differences between studying a foreign language and the second language, a foreign language on the early stages of learning/aquisition, self-study of foreign language and so on. This diploma thesis deals with national assessment of language abilities of hearing impaired pupils at the ends of the primary and lower secondary schools. Based on the definition of the characteristics of the national assessment, the diploma thesis also focuses on an overview of currently used language tests, both at international level as well as it gives information about the practice in selected foreign education systems. Special attention is devoted to information that deal with the assessment of language abilities in the Czech Republic, and the form of participation of pupils with hearing impairement in such testing . The practical part is done by a research which was done to find out the views of those involved in the education of pupils with hearing disorders just the current assessment practice language skills of the pupils. In the final part of my diploma thesis is a possible outline for innovations for testing related to information from the preceding parts of my diploma thesis.
Linguistic pragmatics in Teaching of Czech as a foreign language

The focus of dissertation belongs to the field of learning Czech as a foreign language and deals with the acquisition of pragmatic competence of non-native speakers. Whereas this is a broad area, the work concentrates on speech act request. The aim is to describe how two students of Czech acquired the speech act during a one-year intensive course. The theoretical background is given in Chapter I. The term Interlanguage Pragmatics is introduced to Czech readers. The Chapter further maps what the pragmatic research of non- native speakers generally deals with and what questions it asks. Attention is paid to possible methods for collecting data for research of pragmatic competence, what kinds of errors non- native speakers usually make, what environment is suitable for the acquisition of pragmatic competence or how individual differences among students affects pragmatic competence. In the second chapter attention is paid to speech act request. We present an overview of major longitudinal studies. Standard Language with Regard to Teaching Czech as a Foreign Language

The dissertation analyses the stratification of Czech in terms of teaching Czech as a foreign language. The general theoretical part relates to teaching Czech as a foreign language or other foreign languages as close as possible. This part also includes the analysis of recordings of authentic communication between Czech speakers and foreigners. The findings of the analysis are subsequently applied to the sample plans of teaching units. The introductory part deals with the history and development of the theory of the standard Czech language and it also presents the attitudes held by the members of the Prague Linguistic Circle, which were published in Spisovná čeština a jazyková kultura (Czech Literary Language and Culture) in 1932. The theoretical part reflects the issue of defining the standard, mentions diglossia and presents a variety of contemporary opinions on future trends in the development of codification. In accordance with its aim, the paper lists the recommendations of benchmark descriptions for Czech as a foreign language and also describes so called Foreigner Talk, including the way foreigners are spoken to by the speakers of Czech. Voicing in German speakers'pronunciation of Czech

The thesis is concerned with the German speakers' pronunciation of the Czech language, specifically with the issue of the voicing of obstruents. The phonological voicing is realized differently in Czech and German and the assimilation of voicing follows diverse principles. The pronunciation is often underestimated in education. The objective of the thesis is to find out the most frequent mistakes and to propose some improvements for tuition. I have thoroughly analysed 20 read speeches made by German speakers. I have also compared course books from the point of view of pronunciation engagement. The most problematic issue appeared to be the assimilation of voicing on the boundaries of syllables and words. The main contribution of the thesis should be the summary of German speakers' pronunciation difficulties and the materials which can be used for further tuition.
Learning Czech language in the 1 - 3 grade of elementary schools for hearing impaired - description of current situation and potentiality of innovation

This thesis is focused on problems of teaching in school subject Czech Language in 1 - 3 grade of elementary schools for hearing impaired. The whole issue is put into the theoretical framework, which delimit specify of hearing impaired pupils education and the goals which this pupils should achieve in elementary education and primarily in language education too. Special attention is paid to problems of teaching reading and writing - ways to acquiring reading literacy in hearing impaired pupils. Presented are methods of teaching reading and writing and I am thinking about their applicability in hearing impaired pupils education. Is given an idea of teaching in school subject Czech Language in Elementary schools for hearing impaired in history (1948 - 1990), in detail I analyze teaching materials used in that time. Current situation of teaching in school subject Czech Language is describe on the grounds of research probe realized in school year 2011/2012 on four selected elementary schools for hearing impaired in the Czech Republic. To the usage of chosen prepositions in the current Czech through a prism of Czech as a foreign language

v angličtině: This thesis deals with the issue of how to present prepositions in teaching Czech for foreigners. This topic has not been dealt with in detail yet, therefore its main aim is to call attention to some problematic moments in the presentation of prepositions in textbooks of Czech for foreigners. The thesis briefly describes the history of teaching methods in terms of presentation and the importance of grammar as well as the basic characteristics of the Czech prepositions are described based on their interpretation in selected studies. A sample of textbooks of Czech for foreigners ilustrates how prepositions are presented to students. The thesis also attempting to clarify the meaning of chosen prepositions of manner and formulate some general recommendations on how to effectively present Czech prepositions to foreigners.
Czech as a foreign language. Modified linguistic description of the selected grammatical categories of Czech

The goal of this dissertation is to propose and develop theoretical linguistic basis for the branch of Czech as a foreign language. Specifically, it deals with the complex linguistic description of Czech grammar in the function of a foreign language, which would introduce a theoretical solution for the processing of didactic grammars of Czech for foreigners. This description is supposed to provide such a range of linguistic information, which depending on the purpose, enables the variable processing of language structures and simultaneously clarifying the relationships and connections between them. Above mentioned linguistic description of Czech as a foreign language is focused on a specific group of non-native speakers, in our case, a group of non-native speakers, whose mother tongue is German. As it is a model process of description in this dissertation, the attention is only paid to the selected grammatical categories of Czech, namely the grammatical category of the genitive of substantives and verbal aspect. The issue of the description of the grammar of a natural language is initially discussed in general terms, in the part where we define the types of grammars that are relevant to our work. Subsequently we characterize both languages, i.e. Czech and German, in the terms of their differentiation, stratification and typological point of view. The particular linguistic description and its model application, which is the core of this work, is called a modified linguistic description with the reference to Dolník J. (1993). This description is based on five sources. These are the theoretical works of leading Czech and Slovak linguists, dealing with the issue of natural language and works describing Czech grammar. Further starting points for the proposed comprehensive description of Czech grammar is to define particular reference levels according to SERR for Czech as a foreign language, a research unit focused on the target group of non-native speakers and their perception of the difficulties of Czech grammatical phenomena, and last but not least, the research probe carried out in the particular corpora of the Czech National Corpus.
