Laboratory evaluation of activity of traditional Bolivian medicinal plants
Hladová, Alena ; Klouček, Pavel (advisor) ; Přemysl, Přemysl (referee)
Traditional medicine of indigenous cultures is based on the medicinal effects of local plants. Those people have been taught to use these plants throughout history and they employ them as their primary health care. This is supported by the fact that the natives do not have the financial resources to pay for medical care and at the same time it is also accompanied by poor availability of hospitals in areas where these cultures are located. This thesis covers laboratory verification of antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of Amazonian plants from south west Bolivia. This paper also summarizes the economic and political situation of the country together with the development of traditional medicine in the world and with the potential use of this medicine in pharmacy. Part of the work is devoted to the issue of ever-increasing antimicrobial resistance and the possible effects of free radicals in the human body. The experiment was performed by testing nine samples of imported dried plants in laboratory. To determine the antimicrobial properties a microdilution method was used and the antioxidant activity was verified with the ORAC method which is based on the elimination of free radicals. The microdilution method confirmed 80% of the MIC in the initial concentrations tested (1,024 mg/ml) in Satureja ovata plants against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 33591 bacteria and Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria and in the plant Baccharis genistelloides against S. pyrogenes bacteria. The other samples have failed to provide the value of the minimum inhibitory concentrations. This can be attributed to several factors which are described in this thesis. In contrast the positive effect free radicals was confirmed in all samples. The highest efficacy showed Satureja ovata (1373,2 ug TE/mg extract). Writing this thesis was accompanied by a lack of information about the tested plants, both in terms of their botanical description and in terms of comparing the laboratory results obtained with the results of specialized studies. Therefore the results of the experiment were studied in comparison to traditional use of the tested plants that have been provided by Bolivian natives or their effects have been analyzed from the literature.

Šlechtová, Markéta ; Havlová, Radka (advisor) ; Melounová, Irena (referee)
Bachelor thesis, Analysis of the problematics of coca cultivation in Bolivia and its impact on the relations with the US, examines the historical development, traditional use and cultivation of coca. It also discusses the causes of the US hard-line stance against drugs and its efforts to completely eradicate coca in producing countries such as Bolivia. It captures not only the historical but also the economic context, and the strategies and laws used to enforce the coca eradication. It also identifies the major reasons why the chosen strategy does not produce the desired effects, and how the problematic situation of the production and smuggling of drugs should be dealt with according to the bolivian president Evo Morales and the US government. Firstly, the study examines the historical context and traditions of the cultivation and use of coca, followed by a description of the domestic situation, the relation between Bolivia and the US and the lobbying efforts in coca legalization made by president Morales. The second chapter describes the history of cocaine in the US, hard-line stance against drugs and the drug cooperation of the US and Bolivian governments. Honajzrová Banús, Shirley Consuelo ; Kašpar, Václav (advisor) ; Šaroch, Stanislav (referee) ; Baláž, Peter (referee) ; Wahla, Arnošt (referee)
The present thesis, "The Economic Importance of Bolivia in South America and its commercial Perspectives with the Czech Republic", is a complete and unique study which aims to determine, from an in-depth analysis of the current socio-economic situation in Bolivia, the opportunities that arise from its close cooperation in projects common with the European Union as a whole and the Czech Republic in particular, leading to fulfil the new vision of a multinational Bolivia. In order to accomplish this objective, the thesis is divided into 6 chapters. Each chapter brings forward those individual characteristics which best describe Bolivia. Firstly, it analyses Bolivia as a developing country, a situation common to its Latin-American neighbours, and the current tendency of this group of countries in terms of their "intraregional and interregional" integration. Furthermore, Bolivia is evaluated from a socio-economic perspective on a macro-regional, departmental and sectorial basis, focusing on the most outstanding sectors. This evaluation revealed its potentialities as well as specific areas which are still in need of further financial support for their development, in accordance with the current vision of Evo Morales' government. As this study aims to encourage investments in the Bolivian territory from the European Union and particularly from the Czech Republic, it also describes in detail the cooperation and commercial relations in which Bolivia currently participates, at a bi-regional (EU-Latin America), interregional (EU-Andean Community of Nations), unilateral (EU-Bolivia) and bilateral level (Czech Republic and Bolivia). Finally, the thesis identifies a variety of potential projects which any country from the EU, specially the Czech Republic, could participate in, seeking mutual benefit based on their individual supply and demand rates. To achieve this, it is critical for the EU and the government of Bolivia to reformulate and strengthen their bilateral and multilateral commercial relations.
