Genetic factors in the etiology of migraine
Skoblíková, Daniela ; Šolc, Roman (advisor) ; Mravec Bencúrová, Dominika (referee)
Migraine is a chronic condition with a significant prevalence in the human population- Its aetiology involves a combination of both environmental and genetic factors; however, the primary cause is still not entirely clear. The pathophysiological mechanism of the brain, which forms the basis of migraine aura, is considered to be a transient wave of neuronal depolarization in the cortex, known as cortical spreading depression (CSD). Despite considerable discrepancies, there is a wealth of information on suspected or already identified genes whose mutations could potentially be responsible for initiating the migraine state. Currently, there are three recognized responsible genes that have been identified through classical linkage analysis. All three known FHM mutations encode mechanisms that affect ion transporter: the CACNA1A, ATP1A2, and SCN1A genes. Their dysfunction ultimately leads to an increase in neuronal excitability. Pathogenic variants in other genes, such as PRRT2, PNKD, SLC2A1, SLC1A3, SLC4A4, and KCNK18, have also rarely been found in HM. Keywords: migraine, genetic factors, pain, aura
the essence of photography in the digital age
Doubek, Zdeněk ; Holeček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis solves the question of photography not only from the point of view of a work of art, but as a part of a cultural code. Photography in the digital era has the potential to become a new kind of visual language. From this perspective, the photographic universe reveals several essential questions, which we address here. These questions explore topics such as: historical development of images and text, the difference between traditional images and technical images, the cultural impact of mass production of digital devices and photographs, the essence of photography as a symbol from the point of view of semiotics and logic, the difficulties of deciphering photography, the linguistic aspects of digital photography or the meaning of photography in virtual (public) space. Due to the nature of the monitored topics, the work will address problems mainly related to language, logic, epistemology, human freedom in the context of man/device and marginally also semiotics.
The characters in the novel of Ernesto Sábato El túnel and the novel of Carlos Fuentes Aura
Veselá, Helena ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Marešová, Jaroslava (referee)
(in English) This Bachelor's Thesis deals with the characters of two novels from Hispanic-American literature of the Twentieth Century. The first is Túnel written by Ernesto Sábato and the second is Aura by Carlos Fuentes. The initial part of my work briefly summarises the life and principal works of these writers. The following section tries to describe theoretically the literary characters and offers a few possible reasons for their division. The practical part is occupied by analysis of the characters and divides them by using methods which were described in theoretical part. In Túnel, the focus is on the main characters of the novel and the evolution of their relationship. In Aura, the primary focus is on the fantastic transformation of the characters. In the final section, my work offers a summary of several common and different traits of the characters appearing in both novels.
Reflection of the internet in Art and Theory of the 21st Century
Cepáková, Kateřina ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Štefková, Zuzana (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to show several examples of how the Internet affected art and theory in the 21st century. We can trace the origins of these changes as far as the 1990s when the Internet became a massively used medium. At that time, the art movement of net.art was born and new media studies were established. This so-called digital avantgarde used the unprecedented possibilities of communication and distribution that the Internet offered and pushed further the boundaries of artistic practice. This avantgarde was followed later by new generations of artists who experimented further with the medium and reflected on it critically. The Internet however changed dramatically many times ever since then - its interface and contents were being more and more influenced by the users. Artists connected to the term post-internet started to translate Internet aesthetics and themes to physical space. They were the first to do that in such a big measure. Currently the Internet has become so banal and transparent that it's difficult to recognise how far its influence on art and the art theory reaches. The second part of this thesis concentrates on concrete examples of theorists and artists whose practice is being influenced by the Internet in greater matter. These examples will show that it's no longer...

Street Art in Galleries: Aura, Authenticity, and The Postmodern Condition
Chiu, Ewelina ; Armand, Louis (advisor) ; Vichnar, David (referee)
This thesis examines contemporary street art and its exhibition in galleries and museums in connection with Walter Benjamin's concepts of aura and authenticity in the postmodern period. Street art is posited as a marginal art evolving out of the tradition of 1970's New York graffiti that can be made to function as a type of anti-spectacle within the spectacle of the mainstream. Situationist theory and concepts within the agenda of Unitary Urbanism (psychogeography, the dérive, and détournement) are used to evaluate contemporary street art as anti-spectacle. Photography, as a primary method of documenting street art, is considered as a mechanically reproduced medium bringing into play discourses of repetition and originality, which are in turn related back to Benjamin's concepts of aura and authenticity. Andy Warhol, his Pop Art iconography, and practice of seriality are also considered as an influence on contemporary street art's imagery and underlying practice. Warhol's promotion of an "art star" persona is also related to such contemporary street art "stars" as Banksy and Mr. Brainwash.
