Asylstreit - Dispute over the Asylum and Refugee Policy in Germany
WINKLEROVÁ, Lenka
The bachelor's thesis deals with the dispute over the asylum and refugee policy in Germany between the CSU and CDU political parties from the beginning of the dispute in 2015 until the escalation in 2018. First, the thesis summarizes the development of asylum policies in the Federal Republic of Germany and the current attitude of the German government in this respect. Following chapters explore the beginning of the dispute during the refugee crisis and its next development in the years to come, including the escalation in 2018 and the resulting compromise between the German coalition government of the Union and the SPD that settled the dispute. The thesis also analyses the attitudes of the individual political subjects, the aftermath of the dispute and the further development of the asylum policy both in the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union.
(Dis)continuity of German-US relations in the era of Donald Trump
Polák, Patrik ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Hornát, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on German-American relations during the era of Donald Trump, i.e., during the campaign for the 2016 US presidential election and especially during the 45th US president's term in office. It addresses the question of how the relations in particular political sectors were changed, taking into account the history of the issues. The thesis is an empirical analysis. It aims to confirm or refute the hypothesis that states continued in their military cooperation, despite the political break-up. Furthermore, it aims to prove that bad political relations had little to no effect on cooperation between the militaries of the countries. Deteriorating relations between the US and Germany were not an exception in the Euro-Atlantic region. There was a deterioration in the relations between most Western European states and the US. However, it was not as serious as in the case of the US and Germany. The relationship between Germany and the US has probably experienced the biggest rift since the beginning of modern relations between the states, i.e., since 1949. The political rift was mutual, as Germany was one of Trump's main targets of criticism. In addition to that, the German political scene, except for AfD, did not entirely identify with Donald Trump's policies. On the other hand, the...

Securitization of Immigration and Multiculturalism: The Case Study of Germany
Nguyen, Van Anh ; Šánová, Lucie (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the process of securitization of immigration and multiculturalism within the framework of migration, immigration and integration policies focusing on the case of Germany. Using the migration-security nexus as a primary theoretical foundation, I argue that within the policies and legislations related to immigration, German governments ultimately perceive immigration as a threat at the level of state security as well as Germany's national identity. The first government I have selected for my analysis is the cabinet led by Gerhard Schröder (1998 - 2005) who challenged the romanticized perception of the German nation as a "nation of descent" by saying that "Germany is a country of immigration." Secondly, I focus on the chancellorship of Angela Merkel whose approach toward the Syrian asylum seekers in the context of the current migration crisis (9/2015 - 11/2016) has been called "Wilkommenskutlur" (or "Welcome culture"). Nonetheless, by studying the policies related to immigration as well as governments' discourses, I argue that in both cases, immigration and multiculturalism are indeed linked to security issues. Hence, immigrants are perceived as a threat to Germany's national security and its identity.
Wnuczka Polaka, Mutti von Deutschland: Angela Merkel's Crisis Management from a Polish Perspective (2014-2016)
Krempaská, Barbora ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Rydel, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with Angela Merkel's crisis management using the example of the Ukrainian and migration crises in the Polish political discourse. The aim of the research, which relied on the method of content analysis of stenographic transcripts of meetings of the Polish Sejm, was to find out how the Polish political elite perceived crisis management of Angela Merkel as the leader of Germany and the EU in these crises, what motivation they thought accompanied these actions, and what this showed about the Polish political scene itself. Before Angela Merkel left the chancellor's chair after 16 years, she was regarded as one of the most powerful world leaders, having led Germany and the EU through several major crises. However, many of the German Chancellor's actions have become divisive within the EU and, as the example of Poland has shown, also in the internal politics of the Member States. The analysis has revealed that the assessment of Angela Merkel's policies by Polish MPs mirrors the internal political split between the two major Polish parties, the Civic Platform and Law and Justice.
Angela Merkel's handling of the refugee crisis in the years 2015-2016. Political narrative of a dividual actor.
Wiedermannová, Ida ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Dimitrov, Michal (referee)
The diploma thesis examines the political narrative of German Chancellor Angela Merkel during the EU migration crisis in 2015-2016. The aim of the thesis is to show, how Chancellor Merkel justified her policy and the approach of the Federal government in matters of European migration policy. What priorities and motives can be seen in the keynote speeches of the German Chancellor? Which of the arguments were crucial? The thesis is based on the fact that Merkel took on two levels of argument. On the one hand, she understands her political actions in the European Union from a normative point of view, on the other hand some political steps could be seen from a pragmatic strategic point of view. The aim of the study is also to examine the role of Germany in the EU from the perspective of the so-called dividual actor. After the introductory section, the third chapter outlines the development of the migration crisis in the EU. The following chapter brings an overview of the solution to the migration crisis in terms of developments in Germany. The fifth chapter is an analytical part of the thesis, which aims to identify and interpret the various narratives of Angela Merkel in the field of German European policy and the solution to the migration crisis. In conclusion the results of analysis are introduced.
Media Image of Angela Merkel: portrayal of chancellor in Czech press
Tajzlerová, Lucie ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
The master thesis Media Image of Angela Merkel: portrayal of chancellor in Czech press examines the representation of Angela Merkel in two most widely read Czech national newspapers during her tenure as Chancellor of Germany from November 2005 to March 2018. The theses first familiarizes the reader with Angela Merkel in historical context and summarizes theoretical concepts and terms, which explain the relationship between media and politics. After that, the reader gets acquainted with the research questions and hypotheses, method of quantitative and qualitative content analysis, basic characteristics of the selected daily newspapers, data sample and three parts of the studied period. Then the selected media contents are analyzed: individual periods are first examined separately and then compared. After that, the chancellor's media image is also compared in both journals. The thesis explains how Angela Merkel was represented in the first, second and third term of office, how her media image changed during the course and how it differed in selected newspapers. The research also verifies the assumption that the media image of Angela Merkel has changed over time to the worse, especially during her last term in office.
