Nurses experience with violence of patients side.
KREJČÍ, Natálie
The bachelor thesis deals with the nurse experiences with an aggressive patient. The objective of our bachelor thesis was to map the experiences of nurses with violence from patients. According to the stated objective, we set ourselves these research questions: What are nurses' experiences of violence from patients? What are the specifics of caring for an aggressive patient? We used qualitative research methods for our bachelor thesis. For ours nurses we devised half structured interviews. The research group was composed of twelve nurses, who have an experience with aggressive patient. The research results showed that nurses have experiences mainly with verbal aggression in the form of swearing and vulgarisms. Reaction of most nurses to verbal aggression was verbal reassurance, but nurses did not dedicate a lot of attention to nonverbal communication. In physical aggression, nurses usually use restraints, but most of nurses do not think that application of medication belongs to restraints. Further, nurses in physical aggression tried to call help, so they ensured their own safety. Nurses most often classify between restraints: protective belts and a room designed for the safe movement of patients. This restraints are most often used. In caring for a limited patient, nurses pay more attention to the patient's physical needs than to the mental ones. Furthermore, we found that nurses are not very often acquainted with the issue in the theoretical or practical part, for example through lectures or self-defence courses. However, all informants would like to be more educated in the given issue.
Self defense for medical rescuers
ŠILHAVÝ, Václav
Bachelor thesis titled "Self-defence for paramedics" concerns itself with opportunities of self-defence of paramedics in the Czech Republic. In the theoretical part this work focuses on contemporary structure of ambulance service and a composition of the ambulance crews in the Czech Republic. It also defines the "self-defence" term and delimits the difference between martial art and self-defence, its aspects and divisions. The theoretical base of the work also considers the psychological factors of the self-defence, explains the conflict and aggression and describes a body stress reaction. It also defines the legal terms related to the self-defence issues. The final chapter of the theoretical part shows model principles used in self-defence by J. Cooper. Practical part was elaborated in a form of qualitative research using the half-structured interview method. There is a comparation of the statements of nine members of the paramedic team in the South-bohemia. The major target of this work is establishing the statements of paramedics for self-defence and discover a level and possibilities of paramedic self-defence. Using these targets there were established two research questions: Which possibilities offers an employer in this area? Which possibilities do paramedics use and on which level? The research results show, that just a minimum of the informants concerns themselves with a self-defence. It can be caused by low appearance of aggressive patient contact. The most of informants mentioned that they experienced attacks very rarely. The employer does not provide any possibilities to improve the self-defence skills and level of their skills is not high, despite the fact that they get through some education during their studies. According the research the majority of the informants would like to attend any course or educate themselves in this area. This thesis could be used like a base for another research or like an educational text for final year students of paramedic programme.
Analysis of factors affecting the physical attacks on crews of emergency medical services
KLEINOVÁ, Natálie
This bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of the circumstances affecting physical assaults of medical emergency service (EMS) crews. Three objectives have been established. The first objective was to compare the frequency of physical and verbal assaults among the respondents. The second objective was to map out the most common causes of physical assaults of the EMS crews and the third objective was to map out the respondents' knowledge of self-defence. Three research questions were established along with these three objectives. The entire work is divided into a theoretical part and a practical part. In the theoretical part, I focused on the explanation of basic concepts relating to aggression, aggressive individuals and known forms of aggressive behavior. Furthermore, I addressed chapters such as the causes of aggressive behavior, which I split into several groups. Then I also tried to describe the principle of an assault. An important chapter is the rules of communication and negotiation with an aggressive person, what should crew members pay attention to, and also what to avoid. In this chapter, I describe the differences of communication with selected types of aggressive individuals. The conclusion describes the options of pacifying aggressive persons and legal self-defence. The research part consists of the processed results of the questionnaires filled out by EMS crew members of South Bohemian and Moravian-Silesian region, 52 of them in total. The other part consists of the results of the semi-structured interviews provided to me by 4 paramedics working in Moravian-Silesian region. The aim was to choose such respondents who came across assaults, whether verbal or physical. In the case of the interviews, the only respondents were those who had experienced physical assault. The extent of practice the respondents have is ranging from a few years to tens of years. The questionnaires were filled out by drivers, paramedics and doctors, working at the EMS. The results of the questionnaires were recorded in graphs and the results of the interviews were summarized.
Comunnication between paramedics and aggressive patients in prehospital care.
ČÁP, Jakub
The thesis is entitled: Communications between paramedics and aggressive patients in prehospital care. The theoretical part thoroughly deals with the characteristics of a paramedic and patient as well as elaborating a definition of communication with subsequent divisions into communication structures, functions and forms. The topic is further developer and the issue of communication between aggresive patients and paramedics is introduced is the theoretical part. Subsequently, this chapter describes aggresion, its types, causes and solutions on the part of paramedics. Two objetives are defined in the theoretical part. The first objective maps out the procedures paramedics use when handling and aggressive patient before hospital admission. The second objective reveals the problems paramedics encounter when communicating with an aggressive patient. Three research questions were established to the above objetives: 1. Which method do paramedics use when dealing with an aggressive patient during their first contact at the scene of incident? 2. What communication techniques are used by paramedics when communicating with an aggressive patient? 3. Which problems do paramedics encounter in communicating with an aggressive patient? A qualitative research approach was used when elaborating the research part. Data was gathered in the formo of semi-structured interviews conducted using 14 questions. The target group consisted of 10 paramedics from South Bohemia. The results revealed that the paramedics are partly aware of the processes they can use when communicating with an aggressive patient. In terms of the communication issues the respondents agreed on the fact that their most common mistake consists in their failure to control their own emotions, and losing their temper when verbally attacked by the patients. The results of this thesis could help to increase or supplement paramedics´ awareness of the options for best practice when communicating or handling aggressive patients. Furthermore, the thesis could be used as source material for lectures on issues related to communication between paramedics and a patient.
