Image of woman in print media in interwar Czechoslovakia

1 Abstract The thesis "The image of a woman in the press at interwar Czechoslovakia" deals with the visual presentation of a woman who was an integral part of the First Republic press. The thesis attempts to provide an analysis of selected periodicals (magazines especially for women) in terms of the depiction of women. The thesis surveys the changes in society and lifestyle in this epoch of our history which complements the cultural-historical background of the time and familiarity with contemporary press. The thesis focuses primarily on issues of women's emancipation, which were at that time very current and projected also into all areas of the art. Emancipation influenced significantly the whole Czech artistic creation. We can find some evidence especially in the press, which also mediated the reflection of period. The thesis focuses only on the most important press at these times with regard to its scope. Eva revue was especially important for emancipatory efforts and is compared here with men's magazine Gentleman and avant-garde magazine ReD. The main part of the thesis focuses on the actual image of women, generally and in specific cases. Anglo-American culture and Czech society 1918-1938

The Diploma Thesis deals with an influence of Anglo-American culture upon Czech society in 1918- 1938. The main focus is dedicated to the Czech intellectual environment, which has accepted Anglo- American culture and spread it among general public. An importance of T. G. Masaryk to introduction of English philosophy at the Czech philosophical faculty is shown here as well as his support of Anglo- American culture in the time of establishing the Czechoslovakia. Famous Czech author K. Čapek is presented as an admirer of American pragmatism and his further relationship towards American culture is also shown here. A part of thesis deals with Čapek's well known travelogue called Anglické listy. Except of famous personalities, the importance of English department at Prague faculty of arts is also taken into account. The department was lead by the founder of Czech English studies Vilém Mathesius, whose linguistic and cultural studies are also presented here. The last part of thesis is dedicated to introduction of compulsory English language classes into secondary schools and to analysis of curriculum and text books.

The content of this thesis is an analysis of coal mining in Czechoslovakia in 1918-1938. The accent is focused on technical and technological aspects of coal through to economic, political, mining law and other conditions that influence it. The technical part of mining has been for better visibility of work is divided into several stages. The thesis presents a summary of the regions of coal mining, the quantity of extracted coal and methods of coal mining. Phenomen of bar as a part of lifestyle in 1918-1938

The thesis deals with the formativ of Czech bar scene and its social composition of the new entertainment phenomenon, American bar. The main job is to focus on the development of institutions bar during the First republic, the emergence of new republics created unprecedented possibilities for realization of post-war feelings, and so-called "Thirst", which rose to a new wave of hedonism associated with a gradually risik standard of living. Aim of this study was a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon on the example of Prague bars, which includes work such as response to the public in the legislative and federál level. It futher outlines the cultural atmosphere of the bar, the bar forms of promotiion, the normal working, but also the position in the field of international cooperation or a reflection of the bar in the art.

Advertising in Czechoslovak Newspapers between the Wars

The diploma thesis focuses on advertising in selected newspapers in Czechoslovakia between the wars. Analyzed advertisements are compared with historical knowledge and consider as a reflection of the economic, social and political situation. According to the knowledge, the period is divided into four parts which show different developments. Advertisements are analyzed and compared between these parts. In each of these parts are described advertising sections the most typical for particular period, which are often related to the economic, social or political situation. The work, for example, observes correlation between amount of advertisements and economic growth or crisis. The work also examines a reflection of the technological development and modern civilization progress. The most frequent products and brands are described as well as social trends and customs, which we can induce from the advertisements. Further there is the analysis the qualitative progress of advertising. Last but not least, there is a comparison of content and the amount of advertising among the analyzed newspapers.

The personality of the Austrian envoy Ferdinand Marek in Czechoslovakia and the profil of his political relations in the 1920s and 1930s in the 20th century

The study focuses on the personality of the Austrian envoy and diplomat Ferdinand Marek in Prague and the changes of his personality in connection with the political relations in the 1920s and 1930s in context of the international-political development in Czechoslovakia between the wars. The aim of the work is the analysis and description of activities of the Austrian envoy in Prague, with regard to the character of the diplomatic and personal reports to his maternal institution the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Vienna. The other focus is the analysis of the historical context of this period in the area of Central Europe, including Czechoslovakia. The work comes out of the reports of the Austrian State Archives (Österreichisches Staatsarchiv Wien), which have not been published yet. Many German, Austrian and Czech literary sources were also used. The work is written in the Czech language.

Antisemitism in works of christian authors in inter-war Czechoslovakia

This thesis concerns the causes of antijudaism and antisemitism formation and the effects it had on catholic inter-war Czechoslovakian writers. This thesis is divided into two parts, in which I explain and analyse the term of antisemitism, historical origins of antisemitism and the appearances of antisemitism ranging from ancient times to 20th century. Further focus is put on stereotypical tendencies. The second part focuses on antisemitic ideas which Czech intellectual catholic authors expressed in their works during the time between World Wars and analysis of those works. I used analytic-synthetic, descriptive and comparative methods.
