Glitch in new media art: Technological error as a subject of aesthetic interest

This thesis introduces the use of technological failure in visual arts, described as glitch art in the Anglo-American literature, and reveals its specific qualities. The author examines creative exploration of glitch both in image compression formats, and in the user interface of web sites, computer games or operating systems. In addition, the research presents arguments that advocate glitch art in a broader artistic discourse. It does so firstly by analogy, when it compares glitch art manifestations to conceptual and visual qualities of the paradigmatic works of art and artistic movements, and secondly by Dickie's institutional classification, when it analyzes glitch art communities and appreciation by the curatorial, critical and academic public. The central argument of this thesis is that glitch art next to a purely aesthetic experience provides an insight into the heart of technology, which exposes its functionality. Thus it contributes to a deeper understanding of its physical, structural and ideological fundamentals, that have become in everyday life almost invisible due to the logic of immediacy. Historical development of cryptography during the World Wars era

This bachelor thesis deals with the description of cryptographic and cryptanalytic methods during the First and Second World Wars and related historical circumstances. The introduction briefly describes the development of cryptology prior to WWI. The first major chapter examines the application of cryptology during WWI. The next chapter concisely bridges the interwar period, and then focuses on WWII cryptology. The Ultra programme and the problem of Enigma machine is analyzed here in detail. The final chapter is a dedicated to the aftermath of WWII cryptographic efforts in the form of papers by Claude E. Shannon.

Development and utilization of hash functions for information processing

At the end of 70th of last century the concept began to emerge, now is referred as a cryptographic hash function. Currently, these functions are associated especially with a digital signature. In 2005, the worldwide most used function SHA-1 was broken. This fact led in 2007 NIST announced a public competition to create a new secure hash algorithm. This Thesis deals with issues of cryptographic hash functions from the beginning of their theoretical formulation to current events in this area. Citing scientific literature using an XML format

The dissertation focuses on the use of XML for citation purposes. First, a current situation in citation practice, deeply influenced by the development in electronic publishing, is described. Then selected projects aimed at making citation data machine understandable and ways to include citation data into XML formats are presented. Citation formats (both XML and other formats) are dealt with in detail. This part is followed by a brief introduction of citation managers as tools used to automate work with citation data. Typology of cited documents is also covered. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of citation practice in IUPAC color books is included. Based on partial findings recommended practices for the inclusion of citation data into XML formats were developed. The recommended practices are a set of seven principles which can be summed up as follows: use of UTF-8 encoding, low number of elements and attributes, maximum data structuring, use of controlled vocabularies, data hierarchy and use of links to make connections, use of existing document typology or creation of a new one, use of recursion while working with the data. An experimental format based on the recommended practices has been designed. Citation data from IUPAC color books are used to present the way how the format can be implemented in practice.

Information behavior of students of institutions of higher education in the United Arab Emirates

This master's thesis deals with Internet information behavior of students of institutions of higher education in the Abu Dhabi emirate in the United Arab Emirates. It stems from fundamental research conducted in the Spring semester of 2009. The data analyzed in this thesis were collected by way of questionnaires at the institutions of higher education in Abu Dhabi. The thesis starts with a description of the state of the informaiton society in the UAE with a focus on the issue of censorship on the Internet. Next it presents the basic demographic characteristics of the respondents and their profile as Internet users. It further analyzes socializing over the Internet, perception of censorship, perception of the Internet in the Emirati/Arab context and information seeking behavior of the students. It also examines these data sets from a perspective of gender, age, and subjectively perceived social status.

Web social networks and galleries as the support of building career of individual in the field of the art photography

The master thesis is focused on recent inosculation of photography and modern information technologies and also on a daptation of photography to current trends in communication. Special emphasis is set on fine-art photography. Besides delimitation of problem the first part of the text is dedicated to foundation and history of photography where the author refers to dramatic changes that had taken place in the early beginnings. The second part is dealing with contemporary phenomenon - social networks and their moving into the virtual space of the Internet during last decade. The author aims on key aspects of social networks which have a significant influence when in combination with photography. The next part shortly deals with problems of copyright that show up in relation to digital photography. Part of text is devoted analysis of several selected systems specialized in fine-art photography publishing and eventually their selling. The author describes their significant attributes, principles on which they are based and mentions differences among each other. My dissertation is focused on customer-oriented websites. It explains the basic principles of creating customer-targeted websites. It also deals with common suggestions to web design, web navigations and contents. I conclude my dissertation with application of the theoretically acquired knowledge on the analysis of business web presentation, including the e-shop.

Evaluation of Science and Research at Institute of Scientific Information of 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague

The thesis focuses on the evaluation of Research and Development in the Czech Republic. The introductory part of thesis highlights the recency of the topic and describes the quantitative and qualitative methods of assessing outlets of science. The second part of the thesis discusses in detail the evaluation of science in the Czech Republic; the legislative framework and the evaluation of Research and Development are mentioned. The third chapter shows the evaluation of institutional Research and Development and uses the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague as an example. The core of the thesis is the fourth chapter with an analysis of selected primary scientometric data. The final part summarizes the entire topic and highlights some problem areas [Author's abstract].

Scientometric research evaluation with focus on the Czech Republic

(in English) The master thesis is focused on the scientometric methods of research and development evaluation and their use in particular system applied in the Czech Republic. Its introductory part presents the field of scientometrics, scientometric and bibliometric indicators and citation indices. Chapter 7 deals with research and development evaluation in Czech Republic, especially with Research Evaluation Guidelines and describes its assesment rules, results and changes due to its annual actualization. A battle of wills between the Guidelines supporters and opponents is the topic of chapter 8, in particular in the context of reallocation of institutional funding according to the Guidelines. Ideas and opinions of prominent scientists and policymakers are being presented followed by brief treatise on Czech system of research and development evaluation audit carried out by the company Technopolis Limited. In the conclusion the author summarizes and debates positives and negatives of the Czech system of science evaluation.
