Two pathways into the tunnel : comparison of contemporary political development in Czech and Greece
Běhal, Filip ; Buben, Radek (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
(in English): The diploma thesis compares (mal)functioning of the state during contemporary political development in Czech Republic and Greece. Firstly it explaines the theoretical understanding of the notion of state and varieties of its mulfunctioning such as clientelism, patronage and exploitation. Secondly it analyzes path-dependent historical changes of state and its mulfunctioning, since Ottoman supremacy in case of Greece and since democratic Czechoslovakia in case of Czech Republic. Subsequently the thesis deals with the impact that the economic crisis of 2008 had on political development and quality of democracy in these countries in the context of their mulfunctioning states.
Green Perspective. Variations of Green Political Thinking in the Czech Republic
Křížkovský, Matyáš ; Slačálek, Ondřej (advisor) ; Bíba, Jan (referee)
The presented work is devoted to the development of Czech environmental movement in 1990's which is accompanied by academic debate about de-radicalisation. The aim of the thesis is to explore what sort of particular changes in the field of political ideas could be identified behind notional de-radicalisation. For this purpose is first laid out the historical context within which the movements were created onto their political ideals. It is followed by an introduction of the theoretical approaches to analyse these ideologies, outlining the basic methodological assumptions for a morphological analysis of the journals of Hnuti Duha. This analysis shows that between the periods 1991-1994 and 1998-2000 can be seen significant ideological transformations that are linked both with the inclination to certain elements of conservative thought and partly an inclination to a non-political politics. Key words green political thinking, ideology, morphological analysis, environmental movement
The concept of authoritarian regimes and the case of Baltic states in the 30' of the 20th century: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in comparison
Hejzlar, Štěpán ; Buben, Radek (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
The aim of the work is to (1) verify applicability of the concept of authoritarianism to nondemocratic political systems of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia in the times preceding World War II; Juan J. Linz's theory of authoritarian regimes is taken as the initial frame for analysis. The study focuses on (2) dynamics of the transformation of the democratic regimes in an effort to find the most complex explanation of the democratic instability of the region as possible. In this way the impact of individual actors and their actions in the system, institutional design, social structure and party systems on the nondemocratic outcome are taken under scrutiny. The main focus of the study lies in its own analysis and comparison of the newly established regimes, description of their development as well as the development of particular components of the political system: relations among relevant political actors, relations between regime and its environment, ways of gaining legitimacy and public support. Prevalently empirical character of the study enables obtaining a solid ground for verification of the opening hypothesis (1).
Debate about woman's quota in Czech politics
Kotlasová, Lucie ; Slačálek, Ondřej (advisor) ; Kos Mottlová, Markéta (referee)
The main subject of this thesis is the attitude of political parties to the implementation of gender quotas and their approach to feminism as well. The thesis looks at the differences between the opinions of individuals, for example, whether there is a different approach between men and women. Also another important aspect is the influence of the European Union and for example the divergent approach of the politicians of the particular parties in the EU, compared to their Czech counterparts. The context of this issue is the historical development of feminism in Czech Republic, ir in Czechoslovakia, which is important for understanding the current state. The stigmatization of feminism, which has its roots in the 1990s, is reflected in both public and political views today. The second contextual level is the public's attitude, which is also influenced by the anti-feminist wave, and I believe that whose views reflex our political representatives. I look at different approaches and opinion levels on the background of two proposals for gender quotas that have been debated in Parliament since 2009.

Violence and the Political
Svorník, Petr ; Slačálek, Ondřej (advisor) ; Bíba, Jan (referee)
The main subject of this paper is the course of state and violence under the impact of processes of globalization and privatization, culminating in the beginning of 21st century. Max Weber's definition of state as the monopoly on legitimate violence within certain area is highlighted, the aim of this work is to show current unsustainability of a nation state by this definition and also to describe other possible meanings of state in globalized world. After the theoretical introduction characterization of historical process of monopolization of violence by the state follows - contemporary course looks like the exact opposite of historical process, during which the state expropriated all of the other possessors of rights to use physical force. Next chapter depicts the present-day role of the state in globalized world and also possible re-interpretaions of this role for new, cosmpolitan state, whose task should be worldwide promotion of human rights and defence against planetary self-destruction. The paper is closed by emphasis on openness of the whole process - transnational companies try to promote an opinion that there is no chance of state's survival - that is true, but only for the state defined in national, not cosmopolitan terms.
State and War: Development of the Concept
Duda, Jan ; Barša, Pavel (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
The history of international law, understood as an object of intersubjective reality, reflected various territorial structures of human society. States, as bearers of international law, were made in course of history by wars that they led with each other. On the basis of thought of Carl Schmitt we can distinguish two historical structures of territory: the universal medieval empire and the modern sovereign states. Both of these structures were connected with distinct systems of international law and with distinct concepts of war. Since the turn of 19th and 20th century we can observe signs of decline of the Westphalian system of sovereign states. This process, accompanied by changes in concept of war, began to be fully expressed at the beginning of the 21st century in connection with so called war on terror. On the juridical concepts of war on terror and humanitarian intervention I show decline of the Westphalian system of sovereign states and possible return to the international structure of the medieval empire.

Quantitative content analysis and qualitative frame analysis were used for data processing. The theoretical part describes the development of the media, their influence on society, mechanism of news construction (agenda setting, news values, objectivity, bias, access to news, work with sources), the development and state of the Czech and Russian media, concepts of nature and the development of environmental reporting. In the practical part I found out how the environment and nature are viewed and interpreted by these printed media in the content of their messages. Key words: environment; nature; media; representation; agenda-setting; content analysis; frame analysis; framing; weekly magazíne; Respekt; Argumenty a fakta
Islamophobia and New Populism in Contemporary Western Europe: France and the Netherlands
Kočařová, Martina ; Barša, Pavel (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
Islamophobia and New Populism in Contemporary Western Europe: France and the Netherlands Bc. Martina Kočařová The Master thesis Islamophobia and New Populism in Contemporary Western Europe: France and the Netherlands explores current transformations of populism in contemporary Western Europe. The main objectives of the thesis are following: First, to verify a hypothesis implying that islamophobia has become a new feature of the contemporary populism, which has been consequently changing in terms of its content. Thus, it can hardly be classified as another form of the 'far right' politics. In this context, one may observe its shift towards the centre of the political party system. Second, based on the above outlined assumption, we aim to study whether the populist parties can be considered 'populist' in spite of the new features they have recently adopted. The theoretical framework of our research refers to Paul Taggart's conceptualisation of populism applying it on the cases of the French National Front under the lead of Marine Le Pen and the Dutch Party for Freedom and his leader Geert Wilders.
