China's Accession to the World Trade Organization: Case study of U.S.- China trade disputes
Carhounová, Kristýna ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
The subject of this bachelor thesis is the case study of U.S-China trade disputes under the World Trade Organization (WTO) after China's accession to the WTO. Firstly I will briefly outline the US-China relations from 1949 to 2001. I will then focus on China's incentives of becoming a part of the multilateral system and the impact of China's accession to the WTO on US-China trade. Second part concentrates on the development of foreign trade between the US and China as well as on the structural problems of Chinese economy that prevents China from doing smooth business with the US. Appreciation of China's currency renminbi, huge trade deficit of the US, complicated access to the Chinese market and many others are all among the problematic areas. Even though China has pledged to fulfill a whole range of commitments, it doesn't always abide by the rules. Some of the cases mentioned often cause friction between China and its trading partners, including the US, which are often brought to the Dispute Settlement (DS) under the WTO. Following a brief outline of the DSM, I will then focus on the China's evolution in the Dispute settlement system. During the first years of China's membership in the WTO, the members rarely challenged China before the court. However, after the end of China's five-year...
American Cities in Post-Industrial Reality: Detroit and Pittsburgh
Černá, Iveta ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
The thesis studies possibilities of restructuring of post-industrial cities by closely following and comparing the restructuring efforts of two cities located in the U.S. Midwest, Detroit and Pittsburgh. It studies the consequences of globalizing economy on the area of so- called Rust-Belt, as well as the impacts of the federal urban policies on the older industrial cities located in this area. Through deindustrialization of their economies, both Detroit and Pittsburgh suffered from similar problems, such as depopulation, unemployment, factory closure, and urban decline. Therefore to evaluate the level of success of the cities' transformation, the thesis compares their demographic and economic development. The last two chapter of the thesis provide assessment of Detroit's and Pittsburgh's transformation efforts by focusing on the urban planning and economic restructuralization strategies.
Richard Nixon and His Attitude towards Communism between 1950 and 1960
Bandžak, Richard ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
The main objective of this paper is to confirm, or reject the thesis stating that Richard Nixon had exploited the issue of Communism to favor his political goals. And that he had adjusted his views on Communism according to the contemporary political and social situation. Richard Nixon was a significant Republican politician who had become well known warrior against Communism after the World War II. He, for example, had built his senatorial campaign of 1950 on anti-communist rhetoric attacking his opponent. Strong anti-communist rhetoric was together with his loud criticism of Truman administration a typical characteristic of Nixon. During his vice-presidential office he began to abandon his aggressive tactic. If one considers his later presidential initiative supporting the Sino-American rapprochement, it is worth analyzing whether his anti-communist statements were used in pursuit of his own political goals, or based on an ideology.
Transpacific Partnership as a component of America's "Pivot to Asia" strategy and its impact on South Korea.
Srpová, Laura ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
Bachelor thesis deals with the topic of Transpacific partnership (TPP) as a component of America's pivot to Asia strategy. It focuses on the evaluation of the relationship between South Korea and the USA. The TPP, as the economical component of the policy, is a newly planned free trade area among countries of the Asia-Pacific region. China and the U.S. are the largest countries and major economical powers of the Asia-Pacific. Their rivalry raises concerns among countries of the region including South Korea. The current rapid rise of China's political and economical power strongly influeces the relationship between both traditional allies, the United States and South Korea. Therefore, the text deals with the issue of Chinese influence in the decision- making process of South Korea in joining the TPP. South Korean alliance with China, although it is economically beneficial, forces her at the same time to join the Transpacific partnership led by the United States. Thereby, Korea can mitigate China's rising influence and adopt balanced approach to both regional powers. South Korea will profit from this position and from the economical integration in the Asia-Pacific region. Politically, South Korea will remain China's ally but it will stay under the protection of the United States against Chinese...

Triangular Diplomacy - Mutual Influence of American-Chinese and American- Soviet Relations During the Nixon Administration
Pečeňa, Michal ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Pečenka, Marek (referee)
This paper examines the concept of triangular diplomacy, i.e. Nixon's and Kissinger's strategy, which deliberately works with the interconnectedness of Sino-American rapprochement and détente with the Soviet Union. We decided to collect information on the topic from many different sources and synthesise it into a clear and coherent picture. We analyse the international context which preceded triangular diplomacy, explaining the key aspects of the relationship between the players at hand - the USA, the USSR and communist China. The paper also pays attention to the creators of the concept - Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon - and their relationship with one another. We analyse all the key aspects of triangular diplomacy, the principles it is founded on, its mechanism and its aims. We also explain ways in which it is in line with the previously adopted foreign policy strategies and, more importantly, we describe the ways in which it deviates from the former strategies. Finally, the paper provides a wide range of examples - backed by many citations and direct quotes - which illustrate the way in which the mechanism of the "triangle" played itself out. Through this process, we came to a conclusion that the basic principles of triangular diplomacy do work, i.e. that the rapprochement with China did alter...
China's Outward FDI in Central and Eastern Europe
Li, Wenjie ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee) ; Korosteleva, Julia (referee)
China's emergence as one of the largest FDI source country has attracted global attention. There are many researches on the determinants and characteristics of China's outward FDI, but there are only few researches about China's outward FDI in CEE countries. Based on the dataset, which comprises data of 11 CEE EU member states over the period 2003-2014, this thesis investigates the determinants and patterns of China's outward FDI in CEE-11 countries by using a panel data technique. The regression results reveal that for the whole sample period, culture proximity and existing trade relation have significantly positive impacts and China's FDI in CEE-11 is negatively associated with the institution environment of host country. And the results also demonstrate that determinants of China's FDI in CEE-11 change over time. Besides, political relation is also an important influential factor and policy makers should put more effort to strengthen the bilateral cooperation.
New Deal's Impact on the Unemployment in the USA in the 1930s
Šíma, Adam ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Perutka, Lukáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the impact of New Deal program on the unemployment in the USA in 1930s. New Deal was a series of measures reacting to the consequences of Great Depression created by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his Brain Trust. Firstly, thesis seeks to identify the unemployment estimates most suitable for set goals. It proceeds to analyze the unemployment in this era on the national as well as regional level and finds out that changes in unemployment rates reacted to the creation of public works projects. In more detail it focuses on South Atlantic region and looks for the causes of surprisingly high increase of employment rate in the period of 1929-1940. Next follows a case study of New Deal's impact on African Americans in this region. In this matter the thesis concludes, that increasing employment in the 1930s did not apply to black population in the same ways as to white population. New Deal's impact thus differed significantly throughout the US regions as well as in relation to various demographic groups.
