Interpreting of police interrogation in the Czech Republic

This theoretical-empirical thesis compares police interpreting theory with its practice. It has two aims: to establish to what degree court interpreters in the Czech Republic are aware of the theoretical principles and rules of court interpreting, and to determine how this theoretical knowledge is reflected in practice. The theoretical part of the thesis reviews specialised literature and ethical codes that concern court interpreting. Aside from an analysis and a thorough comparison of Czech and foreign ethical codes, this part of the thesis also presents scholarly works and research conducted in the field of court interpreting. The main focus is the role of the interpreter, which is crucial for the work of court interpreters but its definition it not always clear. The empirical part of the thesis takes the form of a qualitative-quantitative study. Two questionnaires were distributed to court interpreters and police officers in the Czech Republic. The questionnaire for interpreters aimed to verify whether, and to what degree, they are familiar with the theoretical principles of their profession and whether these principles apply in practice. Erich Kästner's The Flying Clasroom in Czech translations

The subject of this thesis is the novel Das fliegende Klassenzimmer (1933) written by the German writer Erich Kästner and its two Czech translations from Marta Třísková (1935) and Jitka Fučíková (1961). The beginning of the theoretical part describes the author's personality and his work. Afterwards, the literary, cultural and historical context are explained, followed by other aspects connected with the German source text. The theoretical part also includes the translation theory, on which the thesis is based, and the specifics of translating children's literature. The empirical part consists of a translation analysis of the original and the Czech versions and concludes with a comparison of both translations.

Anticipation in Simultaneous Interpreting from German into Czech

This theoretical-empirical thesis focuses on anticipation in simultaneous interpreting from German into Czech. The theoretical part presents an overview of commonly used interpreting strategies and subsequently concentrates on anticipation, its types, and findings of previous studies on this topic. The theoretical part also describes the main syntactic attributes of German that are likely to lead an interpreter to use anticipation. The aim of the empirical part is to find out if students of interpreting use this strategy. If so, the question is how often anticipation occurs and which type of anticipation is used. The empirical part includes an experiment on two groups of interpreting students, one group having one year worth of experience more with simultaneous interpreting than the other. Čapek's R. U. R.: the reception, genesis and analysis of its Spanish versions with regard to their English source texts

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze two Spanish versions of Čapek's drama R. U. R. with regard to the English text they both originate from. The theoretical part examines the phenomena of indirect translation, metatextuality (especially as far as adaptations for children are concerned) and translation of theatre plays according to Jiří Levý (1963). In the empirical part, R. U. R. is first analyzed with regard to various quotes the author himself said about his play. Next, Paul Selver's English version of R. U. R. is examined: it is explained how the text originated, what kind of changes it contains in comparison to the original text and how it was received. Finally, the thesis focuses on Consuelo Vázquez de Parga's Spanish rendition of R. U. R., which is a translation of Selver's English text. Again, changes on both compositional & ideological-esthetical level and stylistic level are analyzed. Here, Popovič's (1975, 1983) typology of stylistic shifts and changes in translation was used as the main methodological instrument. Translations of Czech Literature in Mexico and Translations of Mexican Literature into Czech

The objective of this paper is to create a corpus of translations of Czech literature published in the form of book in Mexico until 2019 included and to describe how they were received. The aim of the paper is to answer questions about which Czech literature was published in Mexico, when and where it was translated, and who originated the translations. The theoretical part of the paper presents Czech-Mexican relations as they evolved in the sociocultural polysystem of the 20th century. The paper further uses the theoretical framework of the praxeology of translation and the translator's role, it explains the phenomenon of direct and indirect translation, it discusses the importance of paratexts for the study of translations, it explains the specificity of producing translations for the Spanish-speaking countries as well as it outlines the issue of translating from small cultures. Historiographical research, paratextual discourse analysis and oral history were used as the methodological core of this paper. Using these methods, the paper presents a corpus of 39 translated Czech literary works published in Mexico, including "imported" translations and re-editions, supplying comprehensive details on every one of them.
