Currie, Erin ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis seeks to examine the characteristics of the Turkish Lobby in the United States and the strategies it has utilized in its approach to countering the Armenian Lobby's efforts at official Recognition of the Armenian Genocide. While the Armenian Lobby and its approach to Genocide Recognition in the United States has been well-documented, the organizational structure of the Turkish Lobby and its approach to counter Genocide Recognition has been less explored. The Turkish Lobby consists of various Turkish-American organizations with close ties to Ankara, as well as professional lobbying and public relations firms contracted by the Turkish government for millions of dollars annually. The variety of actors that compose the Turkish Lobby is a reflection of Turkey's multi-pronged approach to preventing Genocide Recognition. This seeks to examine the primary strategies the Turkish Lobby has employed to counter Genocide Recognition, as well as its strengths and weaknesses according to indicators of effective ethnic group lobbying. Two case studies are presented in order to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of the Turkish Lobby and the strategies it employed to prevent two House Resolutions calling for Genocide Recognition. Houdek, Kryštof ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The thesis examines altering of Israeli strategic subcultures and their influence on strategic decision-making. It expands the body of literature on strategic culture. The strategic culture influences the decisions regarding when, if and how to use force. The three cases in this thesis encompass strategic decision-making in regard to Iran, Hezbollah and the Syrian civil war. The strategic culture takes a form of particular strategic subculture, which expresses a preference for a particular kind of strategic behaviour. Israeli strategic culture is examined thoroughly throughout its history in the context of strategic culture. The strategic culture and its aspects are described on the background of evolving "national security doctrine." The changes in the strategic culture are correlated with the shifts in the strategic environment and with the evolution of new military technologies and strategies of waging war.
The Israeli Druze: Military Service as a Tool to Influence Domestic and Foreign Policy
Odlová, Markéta ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Záhora, Jakub (referee)
Master thesis entitled "The Israeli Druze: Military Service as a Tool to Influence Domestic and Foreign Policy" regards the relations of the Israeli Druze Community and the State of Israel. Druze people live also in Lebanon and Syria and are usually categorized as an ethno-religious and transnational group. They are distinctive for their secretive and esoteric religion and tightly-knit social bonds. The Israeli Druze community (composing less than 2 % of the Israeli population) is specific for its mandatory service in the Israeli Defense Forces, which marks a difference from other Arabic speaking citizens of Israel. The service in the Israeli army implies that the Israeli Druze people are loyal both to the state and the transnational Druze community. Using the framework of a theoretical concept of Strategic Military Refusal by Udi Lebel, the goal of the thesis is to examine whether the Israeli Druze community was able to influence domestic and foreign policy of the State of Israel in order to reach its own political goals, whether these efforts were intentional, strategic and successful. Alongside, it is also identified which factors may influence the loyalty of the Israeli Druzes towards the State of Israel. To achieve this goal, two cases are analyzed: 1) the reaction of the Israeli Druze...

The Labour Party and the Transformation of the British Foreign Policy at the Beginning of the Cold War
Bednářová, Karolína ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
In this work I deal with the fact how the British Labour Party, under the rule of C. Attlee, formulated the foreign policy of Great Britain in 1945-1951. My work explores whether and how Labour's foreign policy changed at the beginning of the Cold War versus the Conservatives in the 1930's. At the same time, my work focuses on the Labour Party and its victory in the 1945 elections. I examine the issue by comparative method, when I compare how the foreign policy of Great Britain was formed during the 1930s and 1940s. In particular, the thesis compares relations with the United States and the Soviet Union, as it was the two strongest world powers of the time, and the entire Cold War was conducted between them. At work, I conclude that foreign policy and relations with the US and the USSR did not change at the beginning of the Cold War. We can see a few differences in Labour access compared to the Conservatives, but the UK government continued its foreign policy, which already gave a rise and direction to the Conservative Party in the second half of the 1930's.
