Physiognomy of Writing: In the Folds of Literary Ornament
Jirsa, Tomáš ; Heczková, Libuše (advisor) ; Vojvodík, Josef (referee) ; Fulka, Josef (referee)
My PhD. thesis "Physiognomy of Writing: In the Folds of Literary Ornament" deals with the relation between literature and ornament. It interconnects the sphere of literary history and literary theory with that of visuality. Ornament is analyzed and interpreted as a theoretical figure which allows an examination of literature from the point of view of its visuality and its movement. This approach, elaborated and applied here, labeled "physiognomy of writing", offers a possibility of a visual reading of literature; it represents a way to read literary texts not only in terms of their meaning and message, but also from the point of view of their visual and figural performance. In the first part I outline the concept of ornament in its historical, esthetic and philosophical frames, and explain how to use it in order to interpret literature. The second part offers readings of several 20th century literary texts (Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Samuel Beckett, Louis Wolfson and Blanche T.) from the perspective of the affinity of their literary speech and particular ornamental manifestations.
Vlajka the Magazine: its Methods, Means and Aims
Tomášek, Lukáš ; Heczková, Libuše (advisor) ; Wiendl, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the aims, methods and means of communication published in the magazine called Vlajka during 1928-1942 period. Mostly it focuses on the topic of Jewry and Communism (based on the sources and specialised literature study it presents the most striking Jew and Communist presentation models) - regarded as national enemies due to the Vlajka's "fight". The thesis also concerns Christianity, which is a form of defence from Jewry and Communism for Vlajka. Author's interest also lies in the belles-lettres texts' character and Vlajka's relations to art and chosen Czech literature personas. Eventually, the paper reflects ways of thinking on the woman (and woman social role) theme.
From the amorphousness to the hollow body. To the poetics of emptiness in tne work of František Halas
Zpočátku usiloval omezit svůj svět, vlastně světu odumřít, aby jej mohl nezaujatě a především v celku pozorovat a svým dílem o něm referovat.
Changes of religiousness in the Ještěd Prose by Karolina Světlá
Kamenická, Andrea ; Vaněk, Václav (referee) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee)
Rigorózní práce s názvem "Proměny religiozity v ještědských prózách Karoliny Světlé" se zabývá rozbory ještědských románů spisovatelky Karoliny Světlé. Prostřednictvím analýzy proměn náboženského vědomí postav a následné interpretace vystihuje charakteristiku podob lidové zbožnosti v prózách. V práci je konfrontován beletristický obraz jednotlivých forem religiozity s reálnými historickými skutečnostmi, kdy v rámci ještědských románů dochází k ověření nejpodstatnějších aspektů náboženských hledisek v "dlouhém" 19. století. Cílem práce je reflektovat vývojové proměny prozaických děl Karoliny Světlé a interpretovat je na pozadí námi stanovených problémových okruhů dobového pojetí zbožnosti a přístupů k samotné víře. Abstract The dissertation entitled "Changes of religiousness in the Ještěd Prose by Karolina Světlá" deals with an analysis of the Ještěd Novels by the author Karolina Světlá. It characterises the depiction of vernacular devoutness in the novels by means of an analysis of the changes in thecharacters' religious consciousness and their subsequent interpretation. The paper confronts the fictional depiction of the various forms of religiousness with real historic facts; the most important factors of the religious positions of the "long" 19th century are verified on the scale of the Ještěd...
Emblematic reductions of a writer as a literary icon or a "star"
Libichová, Tereza ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee)
Since the dawn of the western literary tradition the meaning and connotations of the terms and concepts of "author" and "authorship" have been changed and discussed many times. Nevertheless, the word "author" still marks someone who is responsible for the creation of a text (or, in a wider meaning, it denotes a creator of any work of art in general), even though nowadays the author is not considered in the romantic meaning of the word, with its connotations focused on biography and life of a historical individual. In current literary theory, the "author" is seen more as three different entities: a psycho-corporeal existence of the author (the "biographical" author), a subject within the text, and eventually an author-character in his own text, whose existence has become the topic of it. Such an allocation of the auctorial subject makes it possible to explore different points of intersection. However, the irrelevance of interpretation from the biographical point of view is emphasized. Therefore, one more auctorial subject is defined: a point of intersection of the "unidentifiable subject behind the text" and the "auctorial subject within the text". Such a perception of the term offers the possibility to analyze certain literary texts with an emphasis on the so-called "emblematic reductions".
(Re)Shaping the "White trash" myth: Dorothy Allison's defiant attempt to deconstruct the "White trash" myth from within
Josková, Zuzana ; Ulmanová, Hana (advisor) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee)
ill contemporary cultural, social, and literary studies in the USA "whiteness" has recently become the central issue of scholarly interest (Wray 146). The goal of "whiteness studies" is to challenge white invisibility and its normative character which continues to permeate most aspects of American life. Rendering the quality of "whiteness" as yet another object of identity debate destroys the racial hierarchy and opens this concept to an honest and unbiased analysis. However, as Matt Wray points out: "Scholars of whiteness have become extraordinarily sure-footed and nimble when the word that follows white is supremacy, power, privilege, or pride, but they tend to stumble badly when it is followed by trash" (Wray 3). This insinuates that whiteness studies are following a common pattern in the American social and cultural discourse and disregard the complexity of the given question, focusing solely on the problematic of "race", and ignoring the numerous related issues such as that of class, gender, sexuality, etc 1. This articulates the need for new approaches to the studies of identity; not those which focus on its single aspect, but those which take into account its complex, fluid and constantly evolving nature. "White trash" as a cultural concept unites numerous identity categories, and it is therefore...
Artist as a gender related issue: gender stereotypes in aesthetics
Šlaufová, Markéta ; Heczková, Libuše (advisor) ; Ševčík, Miloš (referee)
The Thesis Artist as a Gender Related Issue: Gender Stereotypes in Aesthetics considers the problem of gender stereotypes included in aesthetic theories and concepts which are often used in Aesthetics. Gender (as a social construct of sex) functions as a deep factor in all theories of art, art production and artist. The problematic connotations of masculinity and femininity aren't based on the facts but on stereotypes; significant is the example of the myth that man is "creative", woman is "procreative". All of these gender related stereotypes lead to the fact that art and artist are usually seen as a male domain. That is why a reflection of Aesthetics from the feminist point of view is needed, to help to destroy the barriers that still remain in art and aesthetic theories.
Hidden feminity of Jiřina Hauková
Was Staša Jílovská a modernist translator?
Bernasová, Mariana ; Kalivodová, Eva (advisor) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to portray Staša Jílovská (b. February 20 1898 Vienna - d. July 8 1955 Prague) as an independent personality and not through the eyes of her lifelong friend Milena Jesenská or her partner Adolf Hoffmeister - and to confirm or refute the three above mentioned postulates. Due to the absence of any monographs on Staša and an insufficient number of papers dealing - even remotely - with the subject, the search for source documents in libraries as well as in public and private archives was arduous. Ultimately the outcome of nearly all my indepth research was the realization that material on Staša is not to be found in libraries. Consequently, I had to create the bibliography for the first part of this thesis myself. Therefore I consider it equal in importance to the second part, which deals predominantly with the analyses of the extracts of two translated novels. A question thoroughly addressed, but only partially answered, is, why Staša has been neglected in academic literature (or in any kind of literature for that matter). Her decline into oblivion is a mystery, for she was one of the leading personalities of the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918 - 1938). She edited the Vest Pocket Revue, was a close collaborator and friend of Voskovec and Werich, icons of the new, interwar culture -...
Czech LiteraryDreams. (The Interpretations of Three Kundera's Novels)
Kovácsová, Adéla ; Špirit, Michael (advisor) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee)
Diploma thesis Czech literary dreams deals with interpretation of three novels by Milan Kundera (The Joke, Life Is Elsewhere, The Book of Laugter and Forgetting). The core of the interpretations lies with the dreamy parts of the novel. The meaning of the text was sought within relations of more and less noticeable subjects and intertextual references. The interpretations of chosen Kundera's novels are partially observed through the context of works of Ludvík Vaculík, in particular by the context of The Czech Dreambook.
