Design of Lunar Vehicle
Grygerek, Jan ; Jelenčík, Branislav (referee) ; Křenek, Ladislav (advisor)
The thesis deals with the conceptual design of a lunar vehicle for a crew of 2 to 4 people with the possibility of long-term stay during lunar surface exploration missions. The main objective was to design a vehicle that would respect the ergonomic needs of the user in a hypogravity environment both indoors and in a vacuum environment in a protective suit (spacesuit), while respecting the environment in which it is found by its design. The result of the work is a vehicle containing solutions mainly to the issues of entering and exiting the vehicle, ascending to the surface in a spacesuit, placement of elements in the interior, shaping of the cabin according to the needs of the driver and placement of equipment outside the vehicle. Ergonomic requirements and user comfort have been prioritised over the economic side of things, which is contrary to most of the existing solutions for a scientist's workspace in a space environment.

Legal regime of mining in space
Synková, Andrea ; Hofmannová, Mahulena (advisor) ; Ondřej, Jan (referee)
Due to the growing interest of states and private companies in space natural resources, the topis of the legal regime of mining in space is very actual. The purpose of this thesis is to formulate aspects of the legal framework of mining in outer space, which has not yet been created, but its foundations and key princpiples can be deducted from current international treaties and international customs. Currently, there is no consensus on whether commercial mining should even be permissible and whether the ownership of space natural resources is in accordance with international law. For this reason, this thesis presents some views of states, supranational bodies and experts in order to present the arguments of supporters and opponents of commercial mining in space. The contours of the space mining legal regime are also outlined by international expert group initiatives as well as some soft law, while this thesis briefly presents the content of the most iportant of these - the Artemis Accords and Building Blocks. This thesis further attempts to formulate the current interpretation issues of the Outer Space Treaty and offers different point of view on the solution of these issues. This thesis further analyzes the current national legislation on the acquisition and ownership of natural space resources,...

CSDP Operations in the Course of UN Peacekeeping: An Assessment of Their Impact on Mission Effectiveness
Marek, Maximilian ; Kilroy, Walt (advisor) ; Smith, David (referee) ; Bureš, Oldřich (referee)
Examining the impact of military CSDP operations on UN peacekeeping missions, this thesis looks at their mission effectiveness through the derived factors mandate, composition of forces, support, and conflict management. The case studies of Operation Artemis (2003), EUFOR Chad/CAR (2008-2009), and EUTM Mali (from 2013 onwards) show that the impact of CSDP operations on UN peacekeeping is of limited extent. The lack of political will of influential member states within the EU as well as the UN prevent a greater impact, highlighting the vast discrepancy between the EU's potential and the actual effect of CSDP engagements in course of UN peacekeeping. Furthermore, the cases also show that CSDP operations are mostly a product of initiatives by individual member states. Only where the initiating country is sufficiently able to instrumentalise social and institutional networks, and to secure the support of the remaining member states, was the implementation of a CSDP operation actually possible. Additionally, the case studies reveal that the nature of CSDP operations alongside UN peacekeeping transformed from peace- enforcement in 2003 to a rather peace-building nature in 2013 and onwards.
French Military Interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa 2003 - 2012
Chlebounová, Tereza ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to answer how and why France intervenes in Sub-Saharan Africa in the new millennium. This region represented the pivotal part of French colonial empire and France maintained close mutual relationship even after decolonization, partly due to the numerous military interventions. Security and defence policy towards Sub-Saharan Africa underwent gradual changes since the 1990s', France started to participate in multilateral peace operations and outside its traditional sphere of influence. Since 2003, when the European Union launched the first operation on the African continent, the vast majority of French interventions took place within the Common Security and Defence Policy of the EU. There were twelve new operations in the examined period 2003-2012, from which four military missions were selected for the purpose of this research: Operation Artemis in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2003, EUFOR DR Congo ibidem in 2006, EUFOR Chad/CAR in Chad and Central African Republic from 2008 to 2009 and naval operation EU NAVFOR Atalanta launched by the coast of Somalia in 2008. The thesis compares these cases in order to analyse motives which lead France to intervene in Sub-Saharan Africa and to prefere multilateral type of operation. The motives are assessed in the context of the...
Atlantes and caryatids in Prague
Čečrdle, Jan ; Bouzek, Jan (advisor) ; Líbal, Patrik (referee)
Diploma work "Atlantes and Caryatids in Prague" deals with tradition, transition, specific development a shape varieties of elements taken from antique architecture - atlantes and caryatids. For deep comprehension of the whole development, first it's necessary show and understand origins and significance of these elements in antiquity itself. It's also shown a first age of copying and imitating of old models. Original caryatids were dancers of Artemis cult in a village called Karyai (Peloponnésos). Placing human figures in architecture is of older date than story of treachery of Karyai's citizens (Vitruvius), from which is derived placing them under an entablature as an expression of a punishment (in place of columns). Further, both stories are merging. E.g. in case of Erechtheionkorai we can speak of placing them for honor. Mothological origins of Atlant is well-known and placing him into architecture is logical. In hellenistic times were made o lot of reminiscences of old statues (copies or rather mixing of different sources) which can be considered as a first large wave of historism in development of figural supports. We can point out thesauroi of Cnidus and Siphnus in Delphi (the oldest caryatids) and Zeus Temple in Agrigento (the oldest atlantes). The most important classicizing varieties are from...
The Conception of Virginity in Greek Culture
Svobodová, Markéta ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Pehal, Martin (referee)
Maidenhood is an interesting topic in the context of ancient Greek mythology and ritual. Despite the fact that women had a marginal position within the Greek polis, they were important in myth and ritual. Maidens in particular played an interesting part in Greek myth and ritual, mainly because they were in a transitional state between childhood and womanhood. Myths and rituals concerning maidens involve the goddesses Artemis and Hera, who help them with this transition. At the same time, this transitional state of maidenhood helped the girls learn to be women. Maidenhood transformed them from "wild" children into women ready to accept their roles as mothers and wives. One of the key questions that I would like to answer is how Greeks defined the concept of maidenhood. The maidens in myth and ritual that I'm concerned with are for example Pythia, Pandora, Atalanta or the Danaides. But who was a maiden? Why was she such an important figure in myth and ritual? To find an answer to this question I have turned to ancient Greek texts concerning the anatomy and health of women, and ancient Greek mythology and rituals have helped me interpret them. In the context of Greek thought, maidens were self-consistent in a way. They were pure, untouched and that is where their power came from.
'You Seemed the Goddess Incarnate': Echoes of Greek Mythology in Djuna Barnes's Nightwood
Netolická, Anna ; Horová, Miroslava (advisor) ; Nováková, Soňa (referee)
The thesis aims to analyse the echoes of chosen aspects of Greek mythology in Nightwood by Djuna Barnes, which are still being largely omitted by the academy. Mythological narrative in this work serves as a key to unravelling a variety of thematic layers of the book and offers new insight into the behaviour of the characters and their psychology, specifically concerning sexuality and gender as main topics of the book. The first chapter deals with concise contextualization of sexuality in the 20th century with a peek into ancient Greece. The second chapter focuses on juxtaposing the archetypes of gods with the characters of Nightwood. First it focuses on Robin Vote and her relationships that are contrasted to the myth of Demeter and Persephone, while discussion in greater detail is then dedicated to the union between Robin and Nora Flood, which reflects a subversive mother-daughter relationship dynamic. Further, the chapter explores the juxtaposition of deities and mythological characters that evince signs of gender fluidity - Tiresias and Agdistis - with Doctor Matthew O'Connor and Robin; the thesis will also touch upon a comparison to the gender-iconic deities Artemis and Aphroditos. The last chapter discusses metamorphoses, a phenomenon typical for Greek deities and mythological characters,...
