Tesařová, Kristýna ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Röhrich, Alex (referee)
Bachelor thesis deals with the issue of the standard language in the media, based on language planning of Prague Linguistic Circle and traditional presentation of media language, represented by publicistic functional style and media discourse. According to the continuity of language planning and comprehension of standard language in the Czech Republic the author of this thesis expressed the need of unified language planning that would cover the entire area of public communication, including mass media communication. Bachelor thesis focuses on the standard language as an inherent part of the Czech language situation (sociolinguistic variables) and concentrates on the specific approach to a form of media production of each type of mass media. The language of mass media should be analyzed on all language levels, not just limited to the criticism of the formal representation of language in writing and speech. Both parts of language planning - corpus and status planning - should be well-balanced, it is important not only to monitor language varieties, but also other languages that enter to the public sphere of the communication. As an appropriate method for language describing and regulation was chosen The Language Management Theory, created by B. Jernudd and J. Neústupný, which is constructed on the analysis of...

Bachelor thesis "The Falklands War on the Pages of Rudé právo" is about the attitude of the Czech media, particularly Rudé právo. The Falklands' war between Argentina and Great Britain occurred in mid 1982. This thesis will try to tackle some of the unanswered questions on how much space had been dedicated to this conflict by Rudé právo's pages and how it was interpreted to its readers. Above all is this an ideology of unanswered questions or is it an opposition leaning towards either side of the conflict and if so, whether and how they manifested their sympathy to justify their pages. Bachelor thesis "A comparative analysis of cover pages of magazines Respekt and Reflex in the period of 2009 - 2010 (textual and semiotic comparison)" deals with semiotic analysis of the cover pages of two similar weekly magazines in the same period. Research sample includes five covers of each magazine which shows Czech political figures. The first part of this thesis it describes the theoretical essence of semiotics. The second one is about magazines and theory of cover. In practical part analyses the covers of both magazines with the aim of overall comparison in terms of their communicating intentions, construction of reality and its work with myths and stereotypes. Visual and language codes are studied in terms of denotation, connotation and implied postmodern myths. In the recent media discursus has been interpreting signs and symbols, decoding the hidden meanings and perceptions of the dominant ideology in the construct of reality. Attention is focused on the design of Reflex' photomontage and Respekt's drawing, as well as on composition, colors and using stereotypes. Result of analysis shows a consistent approach of both magazines to the dominant ideology, but a different approach to construct reality and creating the communication plan, which comes just from the way of processing.
Gender and Media in the Age of Post-Modernity: Revealing Gender Stereotypes in the Contemporary Czech Advertising Discourse
Olbertová, Martina ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
ENGLISH SUMMARY The main objective of this thesis was to provide a complex perspective on the mutual relationship of gender and media in the age of post-modernity with a special attention to the stereotypical gender portrayal presented to us by the contemporary Czech advertising discourse. We chose to demonstrate this problematics through the methods of semiotic analysis on the analytical sample of 5 advertisements (consisting of selected TV commercials) representing various aspects of stereotypical gender images appearing in the today's Czech advertising contents. We then subjected these selected advertisements to the analytical methods in pursuit of finding the answers to the questions related to the media image of men, women and our society that the stereotypical gender depictions contained in these advertisements help to construct. Although many of these advertisements appear to be openly sexist or even misogynic on the first sight, using the mechanisms of semiotic analysis we came to a rather opposite conclusion proposing the analyzed contents are rather pro-feminine tending toward an extensive masculine critique. This result, however, is based mainly on the mechanisms of oppositional reading of the subjected texts. On the other hand, it is presumable that the "average media consumer" not having access...

Diploma thesis ,, Mythology and ideology of advertisement in magazine Vlasta from 1947 and 2011" deals with a specific way of understanding of values by current society, of a role of woman and family expressed by advertisement and where we can find modern myths and ideology. I chose two issues for analysis, issue 1 from year 1947 and issue 65 from year 2011. In theoretic part we described the origin of myths, their changes and understanding modern myths by current society. We tried to explain meaning of ideology, understanding of character man and woman in advertisement before and now, semiotic codes as per Barthes, Saussure and Peirce and stereotype usage. In practical part we tried to find out how myths are connected with theme family, place and a role of woman and ideology of current society. We tried to find modern myths in nowaday and past advertisements. We applied semiotic and visual analysis on every advertisement from both issues, tried to find signs and how they changed. Changes in mythology are affected by ideology of society, we can see changes in form of advertisement, in issue 65 are mainly colourful photographs, competitions and advertisement for next Vlasta issue.
Mythology and ideology of "children's" semantic codes in the magazine Sluníčko before and after year 1989
Smrčková, Andrea ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Švec, Luboš (referee)
Diploma thesis "Mythology and ideology of "children's" semantic codes in the magazine Sluníčko before and after year 1989" deals with a specific way of construction of reality. We worked with two volumes, No. 20 and 40. Theoretic part deals with the description of main method - semiotic analysis, but also with psychological development of a child, genres intended for a child reader and with the transformation of mythology. We tried to detect myths connected with some topics (family, festival, education, work and differences among people). We carried out semiotic analysis based on the Barthes' theory of mythology and ideology. We studied what happens with the parts of sign in the prime system, if they move into to the secondary system. Barthes called this system metalanguage or also a mythological system. Another chapter deals with advertising that appeared in volume 40. According to the primary hypotheses there aren't changes in mythology and ideology. After we had analysed texts and also some pictures, we recognized that our inquests aren't definite. The myth has not been transformed only in the event of some subjects (e.g. family); changes in mythology are connected with an ideological transformation (e.g. subjects work and festival).
