Interjections in German-Czech Dictionaries
Felbr, Lukáš ; Šemelík, Martin (advisor) ; Vachková, Marie (referee)
This master's thesis analyses the lexicographical treatment of interjections in current German- Czech commercial dictionaries, special focus is laid on user aspect. The goal of this thesis is to provide an overview of possible issues in the lexicographical processing of interjections. The focus is on both the macrostructure with the selection of lemmas and microstructure of the respective analysed entries. Compared to corpus data and to monolingual dictionaries, problems include especially part of speech specifications, selection of Czech translation equivalents, lack of examples demonstrating the pragmatic function of the interjections, or insufficient metalanguage comments. The example of the dictionary entry of the lemma ach shows which steps and decisions must be made by the lexicographical work. At the end, concrete solutions for the lexicographical treatment of interjections are proposed, such as the exact classification of the respective meanings, metalanguage comments on these meanings, necessary attention to the prosodic and syntactic properties, and dialogical examples.

Czech proverbs and their German equivalents. A lexicographic analysis of the SČFL
Kodadová, Ludmila ; Šemelík, Martin (advisor) ; Šichová, Kateřina (referee)
This diploma thesis is focused on the analysis of German language equivalents of Czech proverbs in the dictionary of František Čermák Dictionary of Czech Phraseology and Idiomatics 4 (DCPI 4). The introductory part of the thesis characterizes proverbs as a phraseological unit and reflects the current state of Czech and German paremiography on the basis of selected dictionaries. Another theoretical starting point is the issue of equivalence, which in contrastive phraseology or, more precisely, paremiology plays an important role. The analytical part contains of multi-level analysis of German language equivalents of the Czech paremiological minimum in DPCI 4. Equivalents were verified using Hugo Siebenschein's Great Czech-German Dictionary, Duden 11, Hans Schemann's German Idiomatics, the corpuses InterCorp and DeReKo and the Google full-text search engine. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the current state of German-language equivalents in DCPI 4 and offer possible suggestions for improvement. The chosen approach is therefore not only contemplative, but also constructive. Keywords lexikology, phraseology, paremiology, lexicography, phraseography, Corpus Linguistics, equivalence

The Dictionary as Time Witness
Sivčáková, Petra ; Vachková, Marie (advisor) ; Šemelík, Martin (referee)
The aim of this lexicographical study is to compare the fashion terminology with an emphasis on the 1920s in two German-Czech dictionaries from the first half of the 20th century: Encyclopaedic German-Czech Dictionary by J. V. Sterzinger (1916-1935) and German-Czech Concise Dictionary by J. Janko/H. Siebenschein (1936-1944). The intention is to trace differences in the structure of a lemma and to trace the reasons for its presence (or absence) in the dictionary. Two hypotheses were established for the research. No. 1: New fashion terminology created under certain cultural-historical conditions is represented only in the younger of the two dictionaries; No. 2: The frequency of fashion terminology is higher in the encyclopaedic dictionary than in the concise dictionary. A quantitative analysis was performed on a sample of 370 fashion terms, refuting hypothesis No. 2. It was found that the representation of fashion terminology is similar in both dictionaries. The quantitative- qualitative analysis of the lemma microstructure of the individual fashion terms confirmed hypothesis No. 1. The analysis revealed that the english fashion terminology typical of the 1920s is more frequent in the younger of the two dictionaries.

A corpus linguistic analysis of selected German borderline cases
Stehlik, Dijana ; Hejhalová, Věra (advisor) ; Šemelík, Martin (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with borderline cases. The subject of analysis are modal words with partially identical form. In total, three analyses are carried out. The examined pairs are: zweifellos - zweifelsohne, sicher - sicherlich and anscheinend - scheinbar. The aim of the thesis is to determine whether the pairs are to be considered as so-called Zweifelsfälle (borderline cases), if so, what is their difference, as well as to determine their typical usage. The pairs are analysed by means of dictionaries, German reference corpus DeReKo and the cooccurrence databank CCDB.
Lexicographical Treatment of Focus Particles in German-Czech Dictionaries
Felbr, Lukáš ; Šemelík, Martin (advisor) ; Vachková, Marie (referee)
This bachelor thesis analysing and presenting the lexicographical treatment of focus particles (auch, nur, sogar, ...) in German-Czech commercial dictionaries. The goal of this paper is to provide an overview of the current status of the lexicographical treatment of this group of particles and address and highlight concrete issues. The focus is on both the macrostructure and microstructure of the respective dictionary and the analysed entries. Problems include, for example, word type specifications, unclear definition of the particle term, lack of examples or insufficient metalanguage comments. Subsequently, the focus particle auch serves as an example to illustrate how the lexicographic editing of these focus particles in an academic dictionary should be expanded and how the stated problems can be solved by using methods of corpus linguistics. The suggested solutions, such as the specification of the concrete particle subclass, the exact classification of the respective meanings, exemplification which exceeds the length of a sentence, syntactic properties or the specification of accent, are then generalized for the entire group of focus particles and set in relation to a possible lexicographical treatment of the entire word class of particles.
Verbal epistemic parentheses in German and Czech
Rybová, Martina ; Šemelík, Martin (advisor) ; Vachková, Marie (referee)
The presented diploma thesis deals with the description of verbal epistemic parentheses such as (ich) glaub(e) or (ich) mein(e) in German and myslím in Czech. These types usually do not belong among the means of expressing epistemic modality and are often neglected in current dictionaries and grammars, although they have a different meaning than the verb they originated from. The diploma thesis analyzes parentheses (ich) glaub(e) in German and myslím in Czech via spoken language corpora. The German data were acquired from FOLK (Forschungs- und Lehrkorpus gesprochenes Deutsch) which is a part of IDS Mannheim corpora. The Czech data come from ORAL v1 (Český národní korpus). The overall aim was to describe their syntactic behaviour, their semantics, and in some cases their prosodic features. The theoretical part focuses on distinguishing between discourse markers and particles. Such distinction forms a foundation for the analysis. The differentiation between grammaticalization and pragmaticalization is also commented on. Both parentheses were examined with relation to their syntactic position, syntactic integration, and their potential function as fillers. Based on the analysis, both constructions evince an advanced level of particularization and have features of particles and/or discourse markers....
