CLIL method and its application in Biology

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is a modern form of interdisciplinary teaching linking teaching subject and language teaching. The work builds on the thesis, in which I created and Science worksheets in English language. The aim of the thesis was to create, publish and verify in practice a complex CD with interactive materials for teaching zoology and supplementary materials for teachers introducing CLIL into the classroom. The teaching materials include a lot of pictures, games and interactive exercises that can enrich teaching biology in primary and secondary schools. This work summarizes the possibilities of introducing CLIL into biology, analyzes each part of the tutorial CD and evaluates the effectiveness by primary and secondary schools teachers. The obtained data were evaluated using a questionnaire survey, which shows that CLIL method in the Moravian - Silesian region is only marginally extended, the main limiting factor for introducing CLIL method into practice is an inadequate methodological support. Significance and role of the contemporary Czech scientific zoological illustration in educational literature

(in English): The diploma thesis focuses on the Czech contemporary scientific zoological illustration since 20th century till today. In the beginning it describes history and development of the scientific zoological illustration in Czech Republic. The main part of the thesis describes in detail the scientific zoological illustration in period since the 20th century till today. It reveals it's form, influences, techniques used and the work of it's main representatives. Thesis introduces realistic zoological illustration as used in professional and educational literature. It will try to uncover influence of computer-created imagery to conventional artistic techniques in the scientific zoological illustration. It will bring attention to the role of the scientific realistic illustration as well as its possibility to go beyond the educational purpose to boost reader's affinity for nature. It weighs the overall importance of the contemporary scientific zoological illustration.

Zoo clubs in the Carlsbad region and their use in extracurricular activities

The goal of this work is to create overview of the zoo clubs in the Carlsbad region. The clubs with their existence and activity contribute to enhance and consolidate curriculum within each output not only in Biology but also in environmental education. In the first part of this work there are summarized data dedicated to the history of the zoo clubs in the Czech Republic. I deal with their distribution according to the criterias given and present status of the zoo clubs within free time activities. The special attention is dedicated to the history of the extinct zoo clubs in the Carlsbad region, to the plans of their future arrangements and recovery in this region, mainly future construction of the zoo. The second part deals with each zoo club in detail. In the last part I deal with animal species, their acquisition and adoption. There are information about extracurricular activities in each institution, like lectures, clubs and camps. Web pages are the integral part of each zoo club because they often inform about present and future activities within extracurricular activities. Dissections used as a teaching method in biological education on secondary schools - attitudes of pupils and teachers

This diploma thesis investigates attitudes of students and teachers of secondary schools (gymnasia) towards the use of dissections into educational process. Questionnaire survey is a part of the research, by which opinions about animal dissections are examined in terms of a particular interest in dissections, of general interest in natural sciences, disgust towards the peculiar facts and situations taking place during dissections and finally in terms of ethical standpoint of all respondents. Statistic processing of results examined relations between all presented aspects and between gender, age, school grade and targeting of studies, experience with dissections and interest of all teachers themselves. At the beginning of the inquiry the following research questions were stated: 1. Are attitudes of students towards dissections during the lessons of biology different between genders? 2. Are those attitudes affected by factors such as subject preference, targeted field of study, own experience with dissections, favoured method of teaching anatomy or owning a pet? 3. Do mutual correlations between the attitude of a student and a particular teacher exist? 4. Preferences of pupils for different zoological objects in biology lessons

The main object of this thesis was to find out whether grammar school students prefer zoological objects in biology lessons presented a) on photo in their natural habitat or b) the real specimen presented in liquid in glass cylinders and burettes. I have chosen these research questions: 1. In which form do pupils prefer zoological objects, the real specimen presented in liquid in glass cylinders or burettes or in their natural habitat on a photograph? 2. How do these preferences differ during the course of their high school study? 3. How do these preferences differ according to gender? 4. Are these preferences influenced by a specific animal? 5. Are these preferences influenced by other factors, e.g. by the appearance and personal experiences with live nature or frequency of using these objects in biology lessons. The research was implemented by using a questionnaire and a preferential test and was given to first and third year students from five Prague high schools. The conclusion of my research study shows that students prefer neither animals on photographs nor the real specimen presented as a liquid preparation. Zoological Preparation Techniques in School Practice

This thesis consists of description of chosen methods of permanent macroscopic zoological preparations. I verified successfully all the methods in practice and in case of methodological difficulties I optimized them for use in the school environment. In this work I answered the questions that could come up throughout the preparation process, for example: how to preserve the animal correctly; where to acquire the animal legally; what is the best way to maintain the animal's natural colour; what materials to use for the preparation and so on. According to current approaches I created not only a text based version of the manual of all verified preparation methods, but also an online version in form of a web site. To clarify the methods I included video sequences, photographs and schemes. With this e- learning course a teacher will be able to extend the school collection with his own preparations and also will be able to recognize what significant characteristics to point out. As a part of my work I have done a questionnaire focused on using various types of equipment in biology lectures. I have asked primary school teachers and high school teachers from all regions in the Czech Republic. This questionnaire was sent online and 322 out of 1636 people responded.
