The Development of Lord Byron's Satire

1 ABSTRACT As the aim of the thesis is to follow the development of Lord Byron's satirical voice, I have chosen to analyze three of his shorter satirical works (the analysis of Don Juan is omitted on purpose, since it has been thoroughly examined by many scholars) significantly different from each other both in form and content, and thus allowing me to map Byron's satirical technique and to contrast the texts. The following works will be analyzed: English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809), Beppo: A Venetian Story (1817) and The Vision of Judgment (1822). To understand satire it is essential not only to analyze the texts, but also to put them into context, which will also be part of the discussion. English Bards and Scotch Reviewers - his first published satire - presents Byron's sharp opinion on his contemporaries (including the Lake poets) and serves as the poet's defence against literary reviewers. It follows the tradition of the Neo-Classical satire represented by e.g. Alexander Pope whose legacy is very apparent in English Bards. Beppo marks a new approach - it shows a strong Italian influence - not only is the anecdote set in Italy and thus allows the author to satirize both Italian and English society, but Byron also adopts the form of ottava rima typical of Italian literature. Poetry on the Road

The present study seeks to describe the significance of the road, the walking, the escape in Arthur Rimbaud's poetry through the analysis of his poems and the synthesis of the works of his biographers. The study shows the mentioned themes both as motifs present in all the works of Arthur Rimbaud and as a real, radical desire that led his life. Starting with the first influences and impressions that formed Rimbaud's imagination, through his further flights and wanderings up to the definitive escape to Africa and the refusal of the poetry this work creates a compact line, discovers whether the visions and dreams of the poet were fulfilled and whether his poetry relates to his life journey. The study also focuses on the subject of the unity of life and art through the analysis of different approaches of literary scientists.
The myth of Orpheus in the poetry of the 19th and 20th century

This bachelor thesis The myth of Orpheus in the french poetry of 19th and 20th century deals with the mythological references left in the work of significant authors of the modern French poetry. In the first part of the thesis, the Pre-literary and literary versions of the ancient myth of Orpheus are mentioned. We are focusing on the writings of Ovid and Virgil which are analysed. In the following chapters of the second part, constituent motifs are looked up in works of chosen authors from the period of romanticism to the forties of 20th century in connection with particular literary context. The specifical usage of the myth and his changes are observed and described. In the third part; all authors' adaptations are compared also with indication the importance of ancient mythology in the modern literature.

The aim of this thesis is to compare Nick Cave's lyrics with his prosaic work, especially the novel And the Ass Saw the Angel. It focuses on the main topics covered in his work, such as love, sadness, suffering, death, murder, violence, music, drugs, sex and religion. The topic are observed in relation to the lyrical or epic elements of the text. There are many parallels in his novels that relate to his lifestyle as a musician and a performer.
Ludmila Jiřincová and her illustrations of the 19th and 20th century Czech poetry

v anglickém jazyce Abstrakt This thesis describes life and work of Ludmila Jiřincová. She was a czech illustrator, painter, graphic and pedagogue. Thesis includes description of her illustration of czech poetry of the 19th and 20th century, especially illustration of poems written by Karel Hynek Mácha, Karel Jaromír Erben and Jaroslav Seifert. Thesis contains three main parts. The first part describes cultural-historical background of Ludmila Jiřincová's life, which was almost the whole 20th century. The second part of the thesis includes work of Ludmila Jiřincová in the area of czech poetry of 19th and 20th century. There are mentioned illustrations made by Ludmila Jiřincová to poems of Karel Hynek Mácha, Karel Jaromír Erben and Jaroslav Seifert. The third part presents her position in the area of czech art in the second half of the 20th century. There are also described expositions of Ludmila Jiřincová. The objective of the thesis is to enhance the role of poetry within the literacy education at grammar schools, which has been on the edge of teacher's and student's interest since a while. Following the existing binding rules of education the thesis is made to build up a positive attitude to poetry in students and targets to improve their knowledge and personal approach to this part of literature. While being focused on that its content struggles to extend their theoretical skills of literary interpretation as well as practical ones. Last but not least the thesis would like to avoid the stereotypes teachers keep about poetry and its application at school.
Paul Éluard between two Muses

This thesis analyses two creative periods of a French poet Paul Éluard, during which he was influenced by two surrealistic Muses Elena Ivanovna Diakonovna (Gala) and Maria Benz (Nusch) who were at the same time his partners in life. Importance of a poetry inspired by the last Muse Dominique Lemort is mentioned shortly. The aim of this study is to compare poetry from both periods and point out both differences and common character features of women who inspired the author. Finally it will try to answer the question whether in the Éluard's work there is present a single idea of woman-Muse or not. Analysis was conducted on verses especially from books of poetry Capitale de la douleur, L'Amour la Poésie, La vie immédiate and Facile.

TITLE: The Wrath of the Water and Its Relationship with Geasa in the Celtic Mythology AUTHOR: Kristýna Syrová DEPARTMENT: Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies SUPERVISOR: Doc. Dalibor Antalík, PhD. ABSTRACT: This thesis examines two similar medieval Irish narratives, 'Boann' and 'Sinann', from so called dindshenchas, interpreting the concept of the well of wisdom and the right to approach it, as well as looking for probable parallels of the story in other Celtic sources. Although it works towards encompassing the theories of other scholars, who used to be concerned mainly about parallels of this theme in other Indo-European cultures, the main aim here is different. The thesis is trying to explain the chosen narrative from the inside of the medieval Irish society, namely through a specific Irish ideology of a learned class of poets, the filid. It is also aiming to show how the relationship between physical boundaries, such as rivers, and social boundaries (which were connected to the institution of geasa, so called Irish taboos) could have had an influence on the narrative. Social and political functions of poetry in media communication

The thesis examines the role of poetry from the official Czechoslovak Communist Party newspaper Rudé právo ("Red Law") between 1948 and 1953. It analyzes and interprets selected poetry in the context of major holidays and events, and uses this to describe some of the myths of the time and their symbolic meaning. Using essays and public speeches from thematic conferences and congresses, it describes the development of poetry and journalism in this crucial historical period as well as examines their role and mission. This is used to report on socialist realism in literature and provide testimonies of prominent political and cultural figures of the time on literature, poetry, and journalism. Furthermore, it shows how the front pages of Rudé právo were designed on special occasions and what some of the texts contained. The thesis also introduces the most important socialist holidays, explains their context, and opens up the issue of the societal role of them and the way they are presented.
