Disease is neutral - Life with "depression"
Vojtková, Lucie ; Šmídová, Olga (advisor) ; Praško Pavlov, Ján (referee)
This thesis is inspired by the theory of social construction of mental illness. The work is a case study that uses the metaphor of the story and narrative analysis of interviews examining the individual human experience with mental illness. My goal was to find out what makes us understand the disease and how this understanding can be used in a daily struggle with the disease. In the theoretical part, I drew from documented knowledge about mental illness, particularly for depressive disorder and schizophrenia simplex. Then I presented the narrative approach as a legitimate way of exploring understanding of lived experience. The practical part is implemented as a case study and through narrative analysis provides interesting insight into the way of understanding and coping with mental illness a person who has the expertise and also suffer from mental illness. Key words: mental illness, social construction, narrative, narrative approach, the dominant medical discourse, depression, schizophrenia simplex, stigma, coping strategies.

The rise of new media, occurring hand in hand with digitality, interactivity and hypertext, enriched not only our media understanding generally, but also introduced to us, as readers, a brand new genre--electronic literature. Approaching electronic literature with a previous knowledge of classic, print literature, readers are familiarized with completely new textual experiences via its genres, similarly as with a new approach to narrative. Interactive narrative has become one of the classic genres of electronic literature. Born in the 1970s and developed further in the 1980s within videogames and computer games, it has shifted to the electronic literature area. The submitted State Doctoral Thesis is dedicated to the phenomenon of interactive narrative as a genre of the electronic literature. Hereinafter, interactive narrative is introduced from the broader perspective, including its origin, development and specific forms.

"Contextualizing the Vikings in Anglo-Saxon History and Literature" examines the Scandinavian impact of Viking presence in Anglo-Saxon England during the so-called First and Second Viking Age, concentrating on the portrayals of the Viking activity in Anglo-Saxon chronicles and annals, as well as Scandinavian (chiefly Icelandic and Danish) sources. It aims to identify the patterns of representation in those portrayals and their development relative to the historical events of the period, the political situation in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, the state and progress of the Church, and contemporary literary tendencies, including the influence of heroic literature and the development of the Anglo-Saxon kingship. Three distinct accounts that came into existence as a result of the Viking invasion of England in 866 are examined.
