Representation of The Velvet Revolution and Culture Changes in Popular Culture

The thesis Representation of The Velvet Revolution and Culture Changes in Popular Culture focuses on contemporary TV series Vyprávěj and it focuses on the specific ways of representation of the historical moment of the end of the commmunist regime in Czechoslovakia. It is divided into two main part - theoretical and analytical. The theoretical one starts with a description of theoretical basis of media construction of reality and social constructivism. Following part of theoretical part is dedicated to theory of collective memory. Then the thesis continues with definiton of the principle of seriality. The next chapter is about historical description of events known under the term Velvet Revolution. In the last chapter of theoretical part is introduced TV series Vyprávěj, its plot and its main characters. It is also essential to distinguish two approaches to the analysis of media contents, which are content analysis and semiotic analysis. In the empirical part, the author defines the object of research. Then she sets hypotheses and define the categories that monitors on a sample of five relevant parts. Then several key scenes is subjected to semiotic analysis.

Current Cultural Situation of Transylvanian Saxons in Romania PhDr. Tomáš Drs Abstract The thesis deals with the current situation of the Transylvanian Saxons in Romania. Based on multiple field visits, it describes and analyzes the problems related to reconstructing the ethnic identity of the community, noting the minority's transnational situation and exploring the generational relations, the minority's position in the ethnically different environment or its political and revitalization activities. The thesis also attemps to reconstruct the actual historical development, looks into how memory is socially conditioned memory and lays out biographies of individual characters. Methodologically, the thesis draws upon the tradition of ethnographic research, working with theoretical concepts of ethnicity (Eriksen, Anderson), transnationalism (Werbner, Szaló) or memory studies (Halbwachs, Assmann, Nora). The aim of the thesis is to introduce the Transylvanian Saxons and other groups commonly referred to as Romanian Germans in the Czech environment. It lays out the history of Transylvanian Saxons, describes their negotiations with the state and the framing of their minority identity. (in English): Bachelor Thesis "The Massacre of Aussig in Sudeten German memory culture" describes the role the so called "Massacre of Aussig" had in the memory culture of the Sudeten Germans from Ústí region, organized arround the Aussiger Hilfsverein This developement is delimitated by the years 1945 - 1973. In this time period, the major forms of rememberance used until this day had established themselves. This description of developement of memory culture, especially the graudal of communicative memory into collective and cultural memory as well as methods of instrumentalisation and actualization of these events is based on theoretical works of Aleida Assmann, Jörn Rüsen and others.

Nostalgia in a Sociological Perspective

The aim of this paper is to introduce nostalgia in sociological perspective that means to show its important social aspects. The historical evolution of the term nostalgia and some theoretical conceptualizations, which show various dimensions of the phenomenon nostalgia are presented in this work. Nostalgia is also introduced in the context of modernity and memory. Special attention is dedicated to the relationship between nostalgia and the idea of progress. This paper further point to presence of the nostalgic paradigm in social theory.

Collective Memory and Identity of Polish Minority in Lviv: Conflict, Integration or Assimilation?

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of Polish minority, which remained after the Second World War in the city of Lviv that is since 1991 part of independent Ukraine. Particular focus of this project is aimed on reasearch of a relationship between collective memory and identity of this specific minority. For purpose of this project field reasearch in Lviv was conducted in the years 2014-2015. This researched focused on work with Polish periodicals that are being published in Lviv since 1990, conducting semistructured interviews with members of this community and survey research in both high schools with Polish language of education that exist in Lviv. The work itself is divided into four main chapters which focuses on theoretical concepts used for purpose of the thesis, general characteristics of Polish minority in Lviv including historical background and present-day relations with local Ukrainian majority, identity and also collective memory of this community. According to the results of the research Polish minority is very well integrated into the Ukrainian society with elements of partial assimilation that takes place also because of large number of mixed Polish-Ukrainian families or good mutual relations with the Ukrainians. 1981 Irish Hunger Strike in Cinema

The hunger strike of Irish republican prisoners in 1981 that was held in Maze/Long Kesh prison in Northern Ireland was the culmination of a protest against the abolition of Special Category Status for convicted paramilitary prisoners. Ten men starved themselves to death. The events related to the hunger strike are not forgotten to this day and still arouse disputes in the society. This thesis focuses on the analysis of popular feature films whose main theme is the hunger strike in Northern Ireland. On a theoretical level, the thesis uses the concept of collective memory which is described in more detail and applied to the issues of cinema in the first part of the thesis. The second chapter briefly presents historical context: the hunger strike itself and also its legacy today. The last and the most important part of the text deals with three movies, namely Some Mother's Son (1996), H3 (2001) and Hunger (2008) which are compared with regard to the origin of their authors, the selection of specific aspects of the historical events and time of their creation. Besides a summary of the main findings, there is also an outline of how filmmakers generally work with the theme of hunger strike in the conclusion.

Native Art as a Source of Cultural Memory. Case Study of Māori Toi moko

This thesis deals with the repatriation of Toi moko (tattooed, preserved heads of Māori or Moriori origins) from overseas institutions back to the country of their origin, New Zealand. Toi moko are considered to be not only human remains but also cultural artefacts, pieces of native art, which are important for cultural reproduction. The significance of Toi moko for Māori culture is explained in accordance with Cultural Memory theory introduced to Social Sciences by the German cultural scientists and Egyptologist Jan Assmann. The aim of this work is to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the meaning of Toi moko in Māori society, to summarise its historical development, and to reflect the recent efforts of Karanga Aotearoa Repatriation Programme that is undertaken by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and funded by New Zealand Government. National identity can theoretically change over time by adapting amongst others collective memory. As collective memory also consists of several components the thesis focuses on early attempts to influence Czechoslovak national identity by altering the meaning of certain historical events represented by specific monuments in the period 1948- 1957. A monument's meaning derives from discourse and traditions. The analysis shows that Rudé Právo articles and Presidential speeches were part of a discourse used to influence the meaning of monuments. ETA in Spanish fiction movies : product or creator of Spanish collective memory?

The Master's thesis "ETA in Spanish Fiction Movies: Product or Creator of Spanish Collective Memory?" focuses on the interrelationship between history, cinematic representations and the way individuals perceive the traumatic past of Spanish history related to the Basque separatist organization ETA. Althought in the recent years there has been a proliferation of literature on collective memory, the approach, which this research follows, fills the gap by combining the macro-level (public) and micro-level (personal) of collective memory. Using the dynamics memory perspective, a theoretical framework that has grown popular within the multidisciplinary territories of collective memory scholarship, the thesis analyses four movies dealing with the ETA subject. These works allow us reflect on how the Basque separatist organization is portrayed in Spanish cinema and how this image has changed through time. To complement the investigation at the macrolevel, semi-structured interviews with 14 participants were conducted, searching for answers how cinematic representations influence people's perception of ETA and its actions.
