COMPARISON OF GENETICEALY MODIFIED AND NON-MODIFIED CORN
BEZUNK, František
This thesis provides a general view of Bt-corn and the growing of this genetically modified plant in the Czech Republic. It comprises of two main parts, a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical part deals with Bt-corn growing by agricultural companies and research institutes in the Czech Republic. The practical part provides a direct comparison of genetically modified and genetically unmodified corn. The DKC 3511 and DKC 4442 YG hybrids were selected as subjects of this comparison. The key aspects of the comparison are the outcrop and the extent of infestation of corncrops with fungic pathogens. Based on the results gathered in the practical and theoretical part of the thesis, pros and cons of Bt-corn growing in the Czech Republic will be assessed.
The use of genetically modified organisms for soil remediation
Pavlíková, D. ; Macek, Tomáš ; Macková, M. ; Balík, J.
The efficiency of soil remediation using microorganisms or plants is low. With the use of genetic engineering it is feasible to manipulate a capacity of organisms to tolerate, metabolize and/or accumulate pollutants.
Genetically modified crops: politics and law of the European Union
Kamínková, Petra ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Lisa, Aleš (referee)
The legal framework for genetically modified crops in Europe is based on the precautionary principle, differing fundamentally from the US system. Where the EU created a complex set of strict rules for dealing with genetically modified crops, the United States continue to view GM crops to be just as safe as conventional crops. This philosophical difference led to one of the most complicated disputes in front of the World Trade Organization. It turned to be ineffective, however, to pressure the EU through the World Trade Organization's dispute settlement. However, it is the current internal conflict between EU member states and the European Commission regarding the authorization procedure for GM crops and the economic ramifications of the zero tolerance policy of unapproved crops on the European livestock industry that might finally bring about change in the European framework.
Development of GM Foods Production in the Czech Republic
Malina, Petr ; Slavíková, Lenka (advisor) ; Vejchodská, Eliška (referee)
In my thesis I would like to focus on the research of efficiency in cultivating genetically modified plants in the Czech Republic. I am going to ask questions about the approach to this dilemma in the Czech environment, about how we stand compared to other EU members and about the reasons behind it. The aim of my work is to analyse how our agriculturists employ the possibilities of genetic modification and how it is paying off. What is our attitude towards the reasoning of world's supporters and opposers of genetically modified organisms? I would also think about a Czech consumer opinion research. On the basis of these questions and those alike I would subsequently like to set, as a goal, an estimate of the potential of GM foods production in the Czech environment in years to come.
