Functional equivalence in the film adaptation of Ian McEwan's Atonement

The aim of this diploma thesis is the analysis of the film adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel Atonement that was directed by Joe Wright and written by Christopher Hampton in 2007. The thesis focuses on the instances of functional equivalence in the film. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part elaborates on the phenomenon of functional equivalence and briefly discusses the main approaches to film adaptations. The practical part examines individual examples of functional equivalence in the film, describes and analyses corresponding passages in the novel and scenes in the film. It describes the scenes in which Hampton introduces the characters with special attention to the changes that were made to fully do so and then inspects the other segments of the film that were transformed to seamlessly transfer the adapted material to screen. The Revisionaries: translation and stylistic analysis of selected passages from A. R. Moxon's novel

This bachelor thesis focuses on translation of selected chapters from the novel The Revisionaries, written by an American author A. R. Moxon. The translation is performed from English language to Czech language and the chapters were selected based chiefly on their linguistic properties. The first part of this thesis, the theoretical introduction, introduces the reader to translation and the theoretical process of translating. Furthermore, it highlights potential issues a translator can stumble upon whilst translating the mentioned novel. In the practical part, four chapters are translated and displayed in a side-by-side format with the original text. The third part of this thesis scrutinises the Czech translated text on the basis of secondary sources, the bulk of which consists of canonical Czech translation studies. Thus, the aim of this part is to justify the Czech translation and to explain the particular decisions which were made during the translation. Critical acclaim of Czech female writers'21st century topical word on Second World War

The diploma thesis Critical acclaim of Czech female writers' topical work on the Second World War analyses book reviews of three chosen novels devoted to the theme of the Second World War, by Kateřina Tučková, Alena Mornštajnová and Květa Legátová. The aim of the thesis is to document how the works have been received by Czech literary critics and reviewers. The analysis examines texts from literary magazines (Tvar, Host, A2, Literární noviny, iLiteratura.cz), general press (Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES, Novinky.cz, Týden) and Czech Radio. The theoretical part defines literary criticism, and summarizes the biographies of chosen writers and the history of some of the important literary magazines that are analyzed in the thesis. In the theoretical part, I also put the role of female contemporary writers into perspective of their cultural and historical context. The following practical part is focused on interpreting novels and analyzing and evaluating critical response. The analysis not only examines the opinions and conclusions of reviewers, but also the quality of the authors' reflections, and the professionalism and complexity of their approach to the novels. Critical Reflexion of Alena Mornstajnova's Novels in the Czech Media

The diploma thesis Critical Reflexion of Alena Mornstajnova's Novels in the Czech Media analyses book reviews of the first four novels written by Alena Mornštajnová: Slepá mapa, Hotýlek, Hana and Tiché roky. This thesis aims to document how her work has been perceived by professional literary critics and reviewers. The analysis examines 27 articles from Czech literary magazines, portals (Host, Tvar, A2, iLiteratura.cz, Bubínek Revolveru) and generally focused newspapers and magazines (Mladá fronta DNES, Právo, Deník N, Respekt, Týdeník Rozhlas, Literární noviny). The period of analysis for this study begins in 2013 when her first novel was published and covers all relevant material up to the present. In the theoretical part of this thesis, firstly the following terms are defined - interpretation, art valuation, critique, review and interview. Thereafter, the biography of Alena Mornštajnová is summarized. Finally, literary media, which published crucial critiques and reviews for the analysis, are introduced. A Congregation of Jackals: The Translation and Stylistic Analysis of Two Chapters of the Novel

This bachelor thesis focuses on the translation of selected parts of a novel from English language into Czech Language. Three chapters from the novel A Congregation of Jackals, written by American author Steven Craig Zahler, were selected deliberately for the purpose of the translation with an eye on their artistic and linguistic properties. The first chapter was chosen from the very beginning of the novel, the other ones come from its first half. The practical part of the thesis consists of the translation itself. This is previewed by a brief introductory chapter that takes a cursory glance at the basic principles of translation theory. The analytical part examines the theoretical grounding of the translating process and identifies some specific issues which were encountered during the translation. In doing so, it seeks to substantiate the practical solutions in the practical part with the reference to theoretical sources that had been consulted either prior to or throughout the translation process.
