Chronic Patients' Depression
Pečinková, Jana ; Šivicová, Gabriela (advisor) ; Loneková, Katarína (referee)
This thesis "Chronic Patients' Depression" looks into Alzheimer's disease patients' depression. Theoretical part focuses on topics of old age, dementia syndrome, Alzheimer's disease and depression. These topics are described also in their associations. Current researches in the field of study are mentioned too. Practical part deals with presence of depression in Alzheimer's persons. Hypothesis that depression is more frequent in early stage of dementia is tested. In the research there is used standardised method - Yesevage's Geriatric Depression Scale. Other methods which can bring new information is also used (Geriatric Depression Scale filled in by caring persons and structured observation). The outcome is 9,7% Alzheimer's patients suffer from depression. More persons with depression we can find in a group of Alzheimer's early stage however difference between group of early and advanced stage is not significant. This study occupies with assets of other methods for diagnostic of depression.

Jírová, Monika ; Ondrušová, Jiřina (advisor) ; Cimrmannová, Tereza (referee)
Thesis entitled "The issue of institutional care for the elderly with Alzheimer's disease" includes information about different types of dementia, charts the current situation in the Czech Republic and in the world, characterized fundamental questions of social policy and presents some methods of non-pharmacological treatment. The research analyzes the conditions of life of seniors with Alzheimer's disease who live in different types of institutions. It also focuses on family members. For compact view on the topic contribute opinions of experts from relevant institutions. Aim of this study is to describe and compare the system of care in individual and institutional facilities using statistical information to point to the timeliness issue.
Use of reminiscence therapy for older people and people with dementia
Pichová, Markéta ; Leontovyčová, Jana (advisor) ; Cintlová, Jitka (referee)
This thesis focuses on elderly people. It focuses on people with dementia and on the importance of reminiscence therapy when working with these target groups. The thesis describes dementia and types of dementia, progression of dementia, prevention of dementia, needs of seniors and people with dementia. It gives theoretical description of reminiscence therapy and its use. Practical description of reminiscence based on particular personal research, which is carried out with the help of interviews, personal documentation studies, case studies and observation of seniors and people with dementia.

Effects of Neurotransmission-Modulating Multipotent Compounds in Pharmacological Animal Models of Cognitive Deficit
Chvojková, Markéta ; Valeš, Karel (advisor) ; Kuchař, Martin (referee) ; Rudá, Jana (referee)
In preclinical research on Alzheimer's disease pharmacotherapy, attention is paid to multipotent compounds, enabling intensification of the effect by targeting multiple pathophysiological mechanisms. The aim of the thesis was to assess the effect of multipotent compounds and combination therapy in models of cognitive deficit in the rat. The mechanism of action of the tested compounds was modulation of neurotransmitter systems. The aim of the first part of the study was to compare the effect of experimental monotherapy and combination therapy with an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist and a γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor positive modulator in the trimethyltin-induced model. Superiority of the combination therapy was proven by histological analysis of hippocampal neurodegeneration; however, it did not reach statistical significance in the cognitive test. The other part of the thesis focused on multipotent tacrine derivatives. We demonstrated a positive effect of 6- chlorotacrine-6-nitrobenzothiazole hybrid, as well as 6-chlorotacrine-L-tryptophan hybrid, acting as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, in the scopolamine-induced model of cognitive deficit. Besides, we demonstrated a low risk of serious side effects of other tacrine derivatives acting as NMDA receptor antagonists....
The needs of people with dementia and the support of their independent living in their own environment
Bártová, Alžběta ; Šteffl, Michal (advisor) ; Bunc, Václav (referee) ; Jurašková, Božena (referee)
The present thesis which focuses on the needs of people with dementia and the support of their independent living in the home environment was written within the framework of the PhD study in Longevity at the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University, GAČR project co- researcher and AZV participated in during post gradual studies. Presented research focuses on the needs of home dwelling people with dementia, the needs of their informal carers, the needs and experiences with providing care of patients with dementia in acute hospital care. The text of the thesis is divided into four parts, which are based on texts reviewed and published or prepared for publication. The first three parts present own research aimed at identifying the needs of people with dementia and experiences with caring of them in their home environment and in the hospital environment during acute care. The final part presents the possibilities and services to support their independent life in their own environment.
The impact of caring for a person with dementia on the perception of old age and aging
Trešlová, Debora ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Spalová, Barbora (referee)
This work focuses on the themes of old age, ageing and dementia. It seeks to explore how people who are caring for a loved one with dementia construct their ideas about the illness and how their experience of caring translates into their ideas about old age and ageing. These themes are discussed against the background of the third age, active ageing and the social imagination of the fourth age as conceived by Gilleard and Higgs. The thesis shows how the respondents form their ideas about their own old age in the context of third age culture, what aspects of old age they consider most important, and conversely what constitutes for them an image of a bad old age. At the same time, this thesis captures the respondents' experience of caring for their parent and how they construct ideas about this illness on the basis of this experience. The specific aspects of the disease of dementia are discussed in the context of key elements of the social imaginary of the fourth age and its most debated concepts, including the concept of personhood. The problematic aspects of the disease are reflected in the experience of caring for a loved one with dementia, and reflected in the fear of the disease in terms of their impact on the relationship with the parent, the nature and need for care.
