The comparison of chosen aspects of Kytice by Karel Jaromír Erben and Ballady i romanse by Adam Mickiewicz

The bacheloral thesis The comparation of the chosen aspects of Kytice by Karel Jaromír Erben and Ballady i romanse by Adam Mickiewicz will in the opening part describe the complex characterization of ballads on the both primary texts. Next will introduce authors and their works. In the following part the bacheloral thesis will focus for example on the comparation of the literary motives, the characterizations of the real and supernatural characters, the concept of the death or the motive of character's transformation. The bacheloral thesis will focus on description of the atmosphere and time, in which the ballads take place. Afterwards the thesis will be concerned for example with the motive of guilt and punishment or the character of women-heroines. Figure portrayal in Czech painting of the second third of the 19 century in European context

In my Ph.D. Thesis I suggest methodological approach to the figural painting of the middle of the 19 century, creation of the Czech painter Josef Manes in particular. In this period figural artists still learned to copy historic models in both academic and non-academic institutions. But the figure starts to be also presented as identifying element of the society, newly establishing nations in particular. Also emancipation of artists and their effort for conceptual expression (self-representation) is reflected in the presented figural form. Painting of the European late romanticism is characterised by adoptions of Michelangelo's and manieristic way of portrayal of human body. Thus there is a remarkable shift from so far popular classical Raffaelo's renaissance figure. For Josef Manes, usually only graphic patterns were available. In this thesis I also analyse Manes's anthropomorfisations and his tendencies to deform anatomic proportions of depicted figures. I show that these features of Manes's art have social, mental and formal background. I aimed to find interpretations of Manes's artistic approach, probably influenced by ideas from Munich, Düsseldorf and Vienna. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

The Italian Romantic Polemic

This master thesis discusses the roots, concepts and the subsequent interpretations of the so- called "romantic discussion", which took place in Italy between the years 1816-1826. Based on the overview of selected debate entries and their critical interpretations, we will try to explain the relatively scarce attention paid to the Italian romanticism by critics outside of Italy. The polemic on romanticism started with the article "On the Manner and Usefulness of Translations" by Madame de Stael, in which the author as a solution to the crisis affecting Italian literature suggested to translate more of French and German production, as it already reflected the upcoming romantic aesthetics. This modest proposal sparked a fierce debate which gradually dealt not only with the question of adopting foreign cultural impulses, but also with need to redefine the roots of Italian cultural traditions and build a modern Italian identity. The most important responses to Madame de Staël's article - written by Ludovico di Breme, Giovanni Berchet and Pietro Borsieri - are now considered "manifestos" of Italian romanticism. New Mythology: The Redefinition of British Hellenism in Selected Poetry of Percy B. Shelley and John Keats

This bachelor thesis sets to examine Romantic Hellenism in selected works of John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. During the Romantic era, Ancient Greece occupied a unique position, on the one hand it was admired and promoted as an ideal, on the other hand it was reduced to a very limited selection of texts even at university level. While the Romantic movement originally strived to liberate itself from the classical authorities and sought their own, new ways of poetic expression, the second generation of English Romantic poets made interesting attempts to appropriate the legacy of Ancient Greece, only this time (allegedly) independent of the established canonical views. In my thesis I examine the question of (both actual and perceived) authenticity, the influence of other interpretations, and the problem of authority in the selected works of John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, two second-generation Romantic poets whose education pertaining to the classical world was substantially different. My goal is not to judge the appropriateness of the varying allusions to Ancient Greece in their work, but rather to examine the different relations of the authors to the different, insurmountably other and idolised world. Typology of chosen women characters in the Czech literature of the second half of 19th century

The diploma thesis deals with the typology of nine chosen literary women characters of the second half of 19th century Czech literature. The woman character from the Čtyry doby short story by Božena Němcová, Liduška and Lenka by Vítězslav Hálek, lady Ruska, miss Máry and the unnamed protagonist of the U tří lilií short story from Povídky malostranské by Jan Neruda, Caterina and lady Dragopulos from Jan Maria Plojhar by Julius Zeyer and Lucy from Magdalena by Josef Svatopluk Machar, are at focus. The theoretical part outlines the issues of literary styles of the second half of 19th century Czech literature (namely Romanticism, Realism, Parnasism). Also it delimits the extension of markers for interpretation of women literary characters and, moreover, it briefly presents the women social position in 19th century society. In practical part, the thesis aims to analyze thoroughly the chosen characters, trying to point out all the common features as well as the differences among them. The thesis concludes with the comparison of all chosen characters and, at the same time, it sums up the main changes in the depiction of a women literary character throughout the century.

The introduction deals with Italy in English literature in general, focusing on what made the country so attractive to English authors. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to Lord Byron and his stay in Italy, with references to events and experiences that inspired his poetry. It is divided in sections; each section focuses on a different city, with analysis of some of his poems that are connected to the city in some way. The second part of the thesis focuses on Shelley and follows the same pattern of sections as the first part. The Ideal of Beauty in the Period of Romanticism

(in English): The aim of the thesis is to study the ideal of beauty in the period of Romanticism. The study is based on a close analysis of one of the crucial texts of the Romantic period - the Lyrical Ballads written by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The thesis is concerned with the vision of the beautiful in relation to the aesthetics of the sublime. It focuses on the development of what was perceived as beautiful in the periods preceding Romanticism and how this vision changed for the Romantics. The question is what is the ideal of beauty in the period of Romanticism and how it is presented in the Lyrical Ballads? Is there a common ideal for Wordsworth and Coleridge, or do they differ in their notion of the beautiful? The main focus of the thesis is the discrepancy between the beautiful, on one hand, and the sublime or the grotesque, on the other, both in perceiving the nature and human beings. The Romantics have several similar features as well as the vision of the beautiful, whether they praise women or men or nature, whether they deal with the beauty inside or the surface. Similarities between those are considered as well. The critic of Romanticism in Clarín's novels

The aim of this work is to analyze the critique of romanticism in Clarín's most famous novels La Regenta and Su único hijo, which lies in the realistic and naturalistic description of the appearance and characteristic of the main characters, in which we can find romantic elements as well. However, the author in his work assumes a rather ironic attitude towards these symptoms of certain romantic anachronisms. The critique of romanticism in Clarín's novels manifests itself mainly through various paradoxical situations, naturalistic descriptions or ridiculed characters. The first part of the paper is to present a theoretical introduction of the subject with characterization of different literary styles of the 19th century, i.e. romanticism, realism and naturalism, which elements appear in the analyzed novels. In the second part follows a brief presentation of the author and a detailed analysis of the critique of romanticism in his chosen novels, with more space dedicated to the work of La Regenta, which is considered to be the best Spanish novel of the 19th century.

From fallen angel to blonde beast: characters of prostitutes in Balzac's The Splendors and Miseries of Courtesans and Zola's Nana

Subject to this degree work is the character of prostitutes in French society in the 19th century reflected in eight selected works of French authors of the time. In the first part of my thesis the history of prostitution from "religious prostitution" in ancient Greece to its "golden age" in France in the 19th century is described. The decay of moral principles in the post-Revolutionary period (as a result of religious and social taboos collapse) causes a great spread of prostitution and venereal diseases. Because of these reasons it was necessary to take the legalizing and organizing precautions - the French System. The second part of this work takes addresses the different (romantic and naturalistic) representations of the character of the prostitute in the literature of the 19th century. The representative of the romantic interpretation of the courtesan who is driven to sin due to poverty (the myth of the "fallen angel" redeemed by pure love) is Honoré de Balzac and his novel "The Splendors and Miseries of Courtesans". The opposite pole to the romantic interpretation of prostitutes is a naturalistic beast which chooses the oldest profession herself as a means of executing social revenge.
