Parallel Corpus Manager
Kouřil, Jan ; Dytrych, Jaroslav (referee) ; Smrž, Pavel (advisor)
The goal of diploma project was to implement parallel corpus manager, which can align parallel texts in different languages and insert them into corpus, where several more processing functions are provided. Program provides possibilities of automatic text alignment and its interactive editing. These aligned texts are then inserted into corpus. Program can work with multiple corpora, parallel corpus is allways identified by a couple of languages. In corpus, there are possibilities to search by many categories, view and edit particular selections, lemmatize and morphologically tag given texts, sort selections, import and export data, in many ways edit corpus for further easy navigation and add new expressions to managed dictionaries. Particular chapters describe introduction to corpus problematics, theory of aligning parallel texts, morphological text tagging and lemmatization, external tools used in program, most common subtitle formats and implementation solution of particular problems.
Tool for Automatic Subtitle Alignment
Chudý, Daniel ; Chlubna, Tomáš (referee) ; Milet, Tomáš (advisor)
The main motivation of this work is to simplify the retiming of subtitles, where the inputs are the original and edited video files and subtitles corresponding to the original video. Example – a video editor needs to cut a scene from a video. Subtitles that correspond with the clipped part of the video must be manually removed and the subtitle part that follows the clipped part must be manually re-timed. The tool makes this work easier by automating it. From an arbitrarily edited version of the video file (cuts), the original file and the original subtitles, a version of subtitles will be created that fits the edited version of the video file. Simply put, the goal is to align the original subtitles with the edited video file. The solution is the conversion of video files to audio files (.wav, wavfile), extraction of MFCC (Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients) and subsequent mutual comparison with the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm. From the alignment path (DTW output), signal differences (cuts in the video) are detected and subtitles are adjusted based on them. A dataset was created to test the application consisisting of public domain films and own recordings. The created application provides 69 – 90 % subtitle alignment success on a dataset that contains videos of length 1 – 60 minutes.
The Attitudes of Czech Viewers Towards Watching Foreign Audiovisual Works with Czech Dubbing on the Example of English-language Sitcoms
Krumphanzlová, Lucie ; Vodičková, Karolína (advisor) ; Poliaková, Karolína (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on viewers' attitudes towards watching foreign English-language audiovisual works in Czech dubbing and in the original version. Combining quantitative and qualitative methods, it examines the reasons for Czech viewers' preference for dubbed and original versions, the extent to which these preferences are exclusive, and whether viewers have a negative or positive attitude towards one or the other. The aim of the thesis is, among other things, to find out whether the level of English language knowledge is an important factor in the choice of the preferred language version and whether dubbing is less attractive for younger audiences than for the older ones. The quantitative data was collected via a questionnaire survey, while the qualitative part of the research consisted of group discussion interviews - focus groups. In order to obtain more specific data, the group discussions included a short clip from the sitcom Red Dwarf in both language versions, on which the participants illustrated their viewing attitudes. Due to its extensive focus, the research also mapped the viewers' opinion on Czech dubbing and its place in television broadcasting.

The Technology of Subtitles in Films and other Media

The bachelor's thesis Comparison of the original sound and Czech dubbing in the TV series Friends deals with the analysis of differences in the original sound and in the dubbing of the American TV series Friends. The Friends series is an American sitcom that aired on NBC from September 22, 1994 to May 6, 2004. The series has thus become a phenomenon that still affects and entertains viewers around the world. In the Czech Republic, a dubbed version of the TV show began broadcasting on Ceska televize in 1996. The Czech dubbing of the series was directed by Ales Sobotka, led by the creative group of Alena Polednakova and Vladimir Tisnovsky. There are many arguments for and against dubbing or subtitling TV shows. What determines dubbing or subtitling, as the main method of television translation in a country, is influenced by a complex number of factors, such as price, availability of relevant technology, literacy level etc. The overall meaning and context may therefore be quite different from the original version if the translation is dubbed or subtitled. Web Editor for Movie Subtitle Post-Editing
Námešný, Matúš ; Bojar, Ondřej (advisor) ; Libovický, Jindřich (referee)
Computer Aided Translation (CAT) tools help editors translate documents such as subtitles quicker and more efficiently. These tools vary from platform specific, multi-platform or web based editors. Some editors lack features that translators may find beneficial such as focus on post-editing subtitle translation, a possibility to collaborate on the same document or versioning of subtitle edits. This thesis builds on a web-based subtitle editor FilmTit and adds new features such as saving subtitle revisions, simultaneous editing, optional post-editing column, search and replace and a better video player. The resulting subtitle editor provides a more efficient way to collaborate and translate subtitles.
