Integration of Czechs in Great Britain
Porubová, Tereza ; Čížek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Matoušek, Petr (referee)
The purpose of this research is to describe integration process of Czechs to British society in London. This research was based on Gordon's steps of assimilation - cultural and structural assimilation and it shows us that integration process of migrants can come true although cultural assimilation didn't happen. Being integrated in new society can be achieved by participation in institutional structures and by establishing social networks with host society. The argument of absence cultural assimilation has been supported also by expressions of transnacionalism like transnational connections between host society and place of origin, what appears during participant observatory and making narrative interviews with immigrants.

Horáčková, Tereza ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Bauer, Pauli (referee) ; György, Eszter (referee)
This thesis presents the results of a historical investigation of the arrival and presence of Vietnamese immigrants in Prague between 1974 and 1993. Methodologically, the research is based on interviews with witnesses of the program of socialist internationalism and on the study of the Czechoslovak government administrative documents from the period between 1974, ie. the year the signing of the Agreement between the Government Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam about employing Vietnamese citizens in Czechoslovak organizations1 , with a milestone in 1989 as the collapse of the communist regime, and the year 1993, as the separation of Slovakia and the establishment of an independent Czechoslovak Republic This work is not only based on the assumption that this program influenced the integration of the first generation in Czechoslovak society, but it also shows an indirect influence on the second generation coming after the Velvet Revolution, due to the program's effect on the emergence of Vietnamese social networks. The research aims to uncover the factors that influence the adaptation of the first and second generations in the majority environment and to indicate the effect that the normative framework of the program had on the formation of ethnic social networks. It...

Transmigrants from Spanish Speaking Latin America and the Instrumentalisation of Nostalgia: Symbolic Goods of Those Who Leave and Return
Hidalgo Solís, Priscilla ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Křížová, Markéta (referee) ; Militello, Paolo (referee)
This MA thesis presents the results of an investigation about the Hispanic Americans in Prague. Relying on a transnationalist theoretical approach, this research presents an empirical description about the existing ties between the transmigrants and their city of residence, analyzing the migration networks and the transnational practices that arise during the migratory experience. We wish to demonstrate the measure in which the transnational migration is going to foment the exchange of symbolic goods between the country of origin and the country of reception of the transmigrant, and how this exchange is often triggered by the feeling of nostalgia that is frequently associated with the transmigrants experience. To approach these problems in the thesis we focus on the portrait of the migration networks, and on various strategies adopted by migrants from Latin America. Thus we are able to discover the transnational practices of migrants, their integration strategies, and the tools which facilitate to keep the contact with their homeland, and native civilization/culture. The exchange of symbolic goods is one of the very important instruments. We discover them through the testimonies of the transmigrants, which constitute the frame of this investigation, and function as a window on the nature of the...
The Benefits of Loss: Life Strategies and Negotiations of Identity amongst Indian Transmigrants in Melbourne, Australia
Slavková, Markéta ; Ryška, Tomáš (advisor) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
My thesis The Benefits of Loss: Life Strategies and Negotiations of Identity amongst Indian Transmigrants in Melbourne, Australia is a study of a community of transmigrants of prevailingly Indian origin who immigrated to Melbourne Australia. The majority of these persons came to Australia on overseas student visas in order to pursue a university education; this later created an opportunity for them to obtain permanent residency in Australia through The General Skilled Migration program. This specific migration flow of persons with high skill and education has been supported by the Australian government in the last decade as a reaction to the increased mobility of population in the globalized world. The study focuses on the life strategies and negotiations of particular individuals attempting to show how these global trends are mediated in specific stages of their lives. At the centre of my interest lies a social network of 14 friends who constitute a transnational community in Melbourne, their motivations of migration, the stories capturing their experiences of the migration process, life strategies in the territory of a foreign nation-state and everyday negotiations of both individual and collective identity.

The Thesis is divided into eight parts that are relevant to understanding the problems of Greek minority in our country in the context of involuntary emigration from war torn Greece in the 1950's. The methods used in this thesis were the secondary analyses and the field research (the questionnaire survey). The simple statistical methods were used to gain final result. Key worlds: Greek minority, migration, identity, transnational, diaspora.
