Konečná, Petra ; Mlčoch, Lubomír (advisor) ; Hrušová, Ivona (referee)
UNIVERZITA KARLOVA V PRAZE FAKULTA SOCIÁLNÍCH VĚD Institut ekonomických studií Petra Konečná Ekonomie postsuverénního státu Bakalářská práce Praha 2011 Abstract In this bachelor thesis I focus on an influence of sovereignty to the economy of specific state. It defines what is understood under the term of sovereignty and describes various types of attitudes to the limitation of sovereignty. It presents historically attitudes of philosophers, thinkers and economists to this issue, focuses mainly on theories of natural law and emphasizes the conclusion of the social contract. It sets up possible division of sovereignty determined by limiting factors and it states several specific examples for illustration. In this thesis I show the necessity of perceiving economics in the context of other social sciences. I concentrate on taking advantage of position of post sovereign state by other economic participants through rent-seeking. I present new concepts of rent-seeking however some fundamental basis from classical point of view cannot be omitted without the loss of logic. At the end of this thesis I test an influence of composite indicators of governance on the rent-seeking behavior in the Czech Republic.

Title: The Contemporary International System: Beyond Westphalia? Author: Andrea Kovářová Department: Department of Political Science Supervisor: PhDr. Jan Jireš Abstract: The thesis analyses the contemporary international European system and its chief characteristics. Its main goal is to compare the existing European international system with the ideal model of the modern Westphalian order as defined in the classical works of realist authors in international relations, such as Hans Morgenthau, Kenneth Waltz and Hedley Bull. The thesis will also reflect upon the contemporary debates on the nature of the existing international system, building on texts by Robert Cooper. The thesis will first define the concept (ideal model) of Westphalian system and subsequently will apply it to the contemporary European international relations with the aim to assess whether the contemporary world can still be labelled as "Westphalian" or whether it has moved away from it. Keywords: International Relations, Westphalian System, Postwestphalian System, Sovereignty, Anarchic Structure, Balance of power

Changing role of Quebec in French politics
Lemel, Ondřej ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
This thesis deals with transformations of French foreign policy towards Québec and Canada. The first president of the French Fifth Republic, Charles de Gaulle, as well as all his successors together with their administration supported Québec's international ambitions and its desire to be sovereign abroad in the areas that fall within its competence in internal politics according to the Canadian Constitution. This support took place mainly on the platform of Francophonie. In 1995, the presidential candidate at that time, Jacques Chirac, clearly supported sovereingty movement. After the referendum won by the federalists France started to gradually reconcile with the federal government of Canada in various international politics issues such as protection of cultural diversity and multilateralism. France is also worried that in case of Canada's separation, the English speaking rest of the country would get more easily under the influence of the United States of America. France does not intend to admit this scenario. Jacques Chirac during this twelve-year mandate was gradually deepening the cooperation with Ottawa. Nevertheless, Québec remains the privileged partner of France in the fields of culture and education that are key for French foreign policy. Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was even clearly...
State and War: Development of the Concept
Duda, Jan ; Barša, Pavel (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
The history of international law, understood as an object of intersubjective reality, reflected various territorial structures of human society. States, as bearers of international law, were made in course of history by wars that they led with each other. On the basis of thought of Carl Schmitt we can distinguish two historical structures of territory: the universal medieval empire and the modern sovereign states. Both of these structures were connected with distinct systems of international law and with distinct concepts of war. Since the turn of 19th and 20th century we can observe signs of decline of the Westphalian system of sovereign states. This process, accompanied by changes in concept of war, began to be fully expressed at the beginning of the 21st century in connection with so called war on terror. On the juridical concepts of war on terror and humanitarian intervention I show decline of the Westphalian system of sovereign states and possible return to the international structure of the medieval empire.
New Navigation Routes in the Arctic
Pejchal, Vladislav ; Trávníčková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
As a result of the melting of the Arctic sea ice, new nautical opportunities are opening up in the area of the Arctic. This bachelor thesis deals with what is called the "Northwest Passage" - an opening maritime route which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Currently, the harsh climatic conditions limit the navigation and the economic use of the Passage. However, due to the speed in which the ice is melting, smooth navigation through the Northwest Passage can be expected in a mere few years. Canada and some other countries (primarily the U.S.) have had a dispute about the extent of the Canadian sovereignty in the area of the Passage. This thesis tries to fully cover the issue of the Northwest Passage sovereignty, as well as to find an answer to the question whether the dispute between Canada and U.S. can be solved in the near future.

Three Historical Accounts of the Senate in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic
Broklová, Eva
The bicameral system is theoretically incompatible with indivisible sovereignty of a nation. The Czechoslovakian revolutionary National Assembly 1918-1920 was unicameral. The creation of the Senate under Constitution of 1920 sparked controversy among political powers of time. The senate fullfilled the role ascribed to bicameral system in a modern state because it was composed of a different type of people. Pursuant to the Constitutional Decree of 1944 the Interim National Assembly was unicameral. The possibility to use the Senate as a potential barrier to subjecting the Slovaks to the Czech majority and against the electorates' radicalism not found support. The Constitution of the Czech Republic instituted the Senate but it actually came into existence only 1996.
