Vojtěch Preissig and typography of his time

This bachelor thesis is focused on the restoration of typography from the 1890s to the first half of the 20th century. Special attention is paid to the Vojtěch Preissigs typograhy and his work on the original Czech typography font. Following the legacy of Vojtěch Pressig is the typography work of some of his contemporaries also included in this thesis, especially work of Jaroslav Benda and Karel Dyrynk. This thesis creates a summary of the overall situation of the Czech typography within a given period.
Relation between verbal and nonverbal communication in advertisement

This Bachelor's thesis is focused on the relations between verbal and nonverbal communication in advertising. The first part describes a theoretical basis applying to advertising in general, target group and model of effecting recipients by advertising. Attention is drawn to particular parts of heterogeneous communication, which are verbal part (word) and nonverbal part (mainly picture and colour). The second (practical) part contains analysis of eight magazine advertisements belonging to two categories - car advertisements and bank advertisements. The thesis Magazine Raut, why is life of graphically exceptional magazines not a bed of roses? describes in detail the magazine which was published at the beginning of the 1990s. It gives a detailed description of different elements of extraordinary layout of the magazine Raut. Its uniqueness comes not only from an unusual format of magazine but also from generous work with images and typography which broke the usual rules for magazine production. Unusualness of the magazine Raut also concern the focus of the magazine which overlaps toward national undertone. For a deeper understanding for the magazine Raut is necessary to put the magazine into a context of the 1990s that was crucial for its formation. Due to the exclusivity of the magazine Raut the press responded to it in different ways Czech and foreign and the thesis compiles media image of the magazine Raut. The thesis also includes an interview with Managing Editor and Art Director of the magazine Raut Ales Najbrt. Only five issues of the magazine Raut were published and its demise was due to several factors. The conclusion of the thesis is based on those factors and the conclusion can be generalized to apply to any other form of magazines with exceptional or unusual graphic design.

ANOTATION This thesis examines a discourse of photography and poster, with the aim to join these two phenomena into a single summary theory and create their general characteristics. The work searches for intersections between photography and graphic design/poster and applies them in the theory of poster creation. In the didactic part, the theoretical principles are introduced into teaching art classes at primary schools. The same approach is applied in the artwork itself. Original and Assumed Sources on World Wide Web

The thesis focuses on problem of authorship of the Internet content. It considers the question whether we can analyze the artwork purely as a closed structure of the symbols or whether it is necessary to take work as a broader structure. The first part of the thesis shows the Internet in general and its specifics it as a medium. The second part is devoted to the problem of authorship. It explains traditional view of Nelson Goodman, who examined the authenticity of artwork with regard to the internal arrangement of the elements structure of the object. The third part shows the later theories inconsistent with the views of Nelson Goodman, views of different contemporary authors who present the changes of authorship aspects in the environment which is under constant development, quickly sharing ideas and resources. New theories suggest to look beyond the authorship of the artwork domain, apply broader focous. The conclusion provides a synthesis of these views.
Comparison of graphical interface of Blesk from 1933 and 2012

This paper "Comparison of Blesk's graphic pages of 1993 and 2012" deals with the analysis of best-selling graphic presentation of the Czech tabloid Blesk. The first part is devoted to general visual characteristics of printed materials. This theoretical framework is important to determine the area under the examination and definition of the key terms which I work with in the practical part. Comparing the visual aspects of Blesk from 1993 and 2012, I selected one week from each or five issues from the daily of one week (Monday - Friday). The subsequent analysis focuses on the overall visual aspect of particular issues (format, size, margins) and the sub-characters used such as a color photograph, the arrangement of the parts with an emphasis on the title page, the title of establishment and the usage of other graphic accessories. After the description of typographic character of each period separately I focus on the chapter. The aim is to compare two files and investigate the changes that have occurred in the course of nineteen years, if there are any. The conclusion is dedicated to my personal impression from the selected material of two years and evaluates the contribution of this work.
Typography of the monthly maganize žena a móda (1949-1995)

The thesis "Typography of the monthly magazine Žena a móda (1949-1995)" deals with the graphical appearance of this magazine and describes the changes in its typography. Magazine ran from January 1949 to July 1995, when it was cancelled because of financial difficulties. The aim of this thesis is to divide the years of Žena a móda's existence into periods, depending on its specific graphical appearance. This bachelor thesis outlines the historical context, technical conditions and the influence the Marxism-Leninism had on the graphic design. Moreover, the basic vocabulary of typographical terms is included. The thesis analyses the graphical appearance of the magazine periodically, with the focus on physical qualities, typesetting, typeface, headlines, front pages or advertisement. Furthermore, the graphical appearance of the world's most famous magazines is outlined briefly towards the end of the thesis, as well as the magazine's competition after 1989. The theme of the diploma dissertation became a view of a field of alphabets (letters and types) in contexts of communication, history, art and education. The theoretical part is focused on historical, contemporary movements of the phenomenon all at once. Inclusive of reflecting on alphabets in art and also links to a medial communication. The second part of the diploma dissertation reacts to the strongest and the most inspiring moments. It focuses on a practical applications for art lessons. The third part [artistic] takes advantage of media knowledges and art lessons. They are interfaced into an interactive teaching material which challenges students to an active perception of visual culture.

Námětem mé diplomové práce je jednotný vizuální styl (podobor grafického designu). Diplomová práce se skládá ze tří částí - teoretické, didaktické a praktické. Teoretická část popisuje téma jednotného vizuálního stylu z hlediska historického vývoje, jeho uplatnění a postavení, především u nás v České Republice. Didaktická část navazuje výtvarnými řadami určenými pro žáky 2. stupně ZŠ. Praktická část je popisem mé výtvarné práce vycházející z tématu jednotného vizuálního stylu. Přínosem i cílem této diplomové práce, bylo objasnit problematiku jednotného vizuálního stylu jako součást komplexní komunikace značky a podnítit u dětí zájem o téma grafického designu za využití různých výtvarných technik.
History and quality of the Most Beautiful Czech Book Contest from the point of view of evaluation committee and responses of period press

in English: This bachelor thesis deals with the Most Beautiful Czech Book Contest press evaluations between 1966 and 1990, also regarding the overall quality of Czechoslovak book design, typography and polygraphy. Summarization of the historical development is carried out by analyzing relevant specialized and nonspecialized periodicals. The work is divided into theoretical and historical context of the issue, the analysis itself and a brief biographical introduction to Oldřich Hlavsa, Milan Hegar, Jiří Rathouský and Adolf Hoffmeister, the four masters of Czechoslovak book design and typography.
