The subject of this thesis is a commented translation of the second chapter of the biographical book Franz Liszt. Biographie eines Superstars, written by the German author Oliver Hilmes. The thesis consists of two main parts - a translation and a commentary divided into several chapters. The aim of the first part is to create a functionally equivalent translation and fulfill the intention of the author, taking into account the expectations of recipients. The subsequent commentary includes a translation analysis of the original text based on the model of Christiane Nord, a description of the translation method and translation procedures, and also a typology of translation problems at different textual levels, including their solutions. The last chapter deals with translation shifts.
Comparison of effectiveness of teaching using computers vs. 3D models

Currently, pupils' interest in science continues to decline, although this area of education is very important in every day life (medicine, environment, etc.) and there is high demand for science professions on the labor market. Molecular biology curriculum concerning DNA and the transfer of genetic information is abstract and difficult topic for pupils to imagine, and for teachers to explain. There are many ways to teach this topic. Very popular are iquiry and laboratory practise. But not all schools have their own laboratories, and can teach molecular practical effectivelly. Inquiry based teaching is time consuming to prepare, and not every topic is appropriate to be taught this way. Another possibilities how to visualize "invisible" molecules and processes are computer software and animations or 3D physical model. In my thesis, I examined the effect of using computers and animations to teach abou DNA compared to using a 3D physical model on students' knowledge. I laso tested the possible influence of gender and pupils' preferences on their achieved score on knowledge tests. The research was performed in five classes at three high schools in Prague. Syntax of the Czech Translation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Work

v anglickém jazyce The diploma thesis Syntax of the Czech Translation of J. R. R. Tolkien's Work is based on a comparative linguistic study concentrated on the Czech and English nonfinite verb forms and the possibilities of their usage. The thesis is founded on the analysis of selected grammatical features in John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's Silmarillion and The Hobbit, and their translations by Stanislava Pošustová and František Vrba. The examples of non-finite verb forms working as different sentence elements are preceded by a short theoretical introduction which is supposed to provide a background for the comparison of their usage. Similar examples are organized and analysed together. Within a single chapter the samples were sequenced according to the frequency in usage of the type of their translation. Apart from comparing the original with its translation it is also possible to see the differences between concrete realisations of one grammatical feature in English, and to take into account the differences between the work of the two translators. Czech translation of Russian transgresivs in classical literature

This bachelor paper research on the possibilities of the translation of participles and transgressive turnovers from Russian to Czech language. Its aim it to determine the frequency of participles and other language resources use in transgressive Czech translations of Russian fiction; determine whether the choice of other means than the participles leads to the exact expression of the authors intentions; determine the most and least appropriate translation of Russian participles.
Linguistic and didactic interpretation of translation

This thesis is focused on the linguistic and didactic interpretation of translation. Its objective is to introduce the reader to the issues of language-focused findings, which are reflected in translators' work and besides, to describe the situation of didactic contribution of translation in second language teaching. The work is divided ino two main parts. In the first one, there is translators' work and his competences being presented on the ground of chosen linguistic theories. These are further extended by a practical part of description and analysis of translation methods. The whole thesis is being closed by the second part which mediates the didactic point of view of the given issue. The basic overview facts of actual situation of the use of translation in modern language classes are summarized in here.
Peter Borkovec: The poet of a form

The following paper describes the literary work of the poet Petr Borkovec during the nineties. The first part contains a summary of sources for the poetics of Borkovec, dealing primarily with the culturology of russian acmetism. It consistently keeps to the terms of the "classical" current in context of modern russian poetry, since this context serves as a good basis for reading Borovec's poetry. The second part contains interpretations of the author's poetic collectons in chronological order, as they were published during the nineties. It attempts to seek out the issues the first part deals with in the actual literary works and thus sets out to show the development of the poetics of Borkovec. The bachelor thesis consists of two parts. The first part is a translation of selected chapters from the book written by Tony Parker The Violence of Our Lives: Interviews with Life- Sentence Prisoners in America, which was published in London in 1996 by HarperCollins Publishers. The second part of this thesis is a commentary on the translation based on Christiane Nord's model of translation analysis. The commentary includes a translation analysis; it focuses according to relevance on extratextual and intratextual factors and on various translation problems that occurred in the process. The commentary describes strategies for dealing with the problems as well as the typology of translation shifts that occurs in the target text. It concludes that the text is expressive and embedded in the source culture.
Characterization of the molecular mechanism of translation reinitiation in yeast.

Translation initiation is a multi-step process culminating in formation of the elongation- competent 80S ribosome. It requires accurate assembly of small and large ribosomal subunits, mRNA, initiation Met-tRNAi Met and at least 12 eukaryotic initiation factors (eIFs). This phase of protein synthesis is also one of the key points of regulation of gene expression. One of the main aims of our laboratory is a complex characterization of the multiprotein eIF3 complex that has been implicated in most of the steps of translation initiation. For example, we revealed and described its novel role in translation reinitiation (REI), a gene-specific translational control mechanism that among others governs expression of an important yeast transcriptional activator GCN4. Here I present a detailed characterization of the multi-functional N-terminal domain of Tif32 (subunit eIF3a). We demonstrated that the Tif32-NTD functionally interacts with the 5' sequences of short upstream ORF (uORF1) in the GCN4 mRNA leader and thus allows efficient reinitiation downstream of this critical reinitiation-permissive uORF. Four REI- promoting elements (RPEs) were identified in the 5' sequences of uORF1, two of which were shown to work in the Tif32-NTD-dependent manner.
