The Flemish movement and the Czech national revival

Czech and Flemish history have much in common: for a certain period of time, in both countries a different language than the language of the local people was dominant, and both countries managed to revive the original language. It is this period that the master thesis deals with. Its subject is the comparison between the Czech and Flemish national movements. Both movements were confronted by means of the "synchronous comparison" method under analogous historical situations. The objective was to find out in which elements they are identical and in which they differ. The main sources of research were the Encyclopedie van de Vlaamse Beweging (1998) and České národní obrození (Kočí: 1978). The first, introductory part, explains the concept of a "nation"; the following second and third parts outline the historical background of both movements. National movements are divided into three phases in the fourth chapter. The remaining chapters five, six and seven then deal with these respective phases, describing the development of both movements and providing a summary of their commonalities and differences, inter alia in the fields of language, literature and politics. Buenos Aires in the view of Martínez Estrada and Borges

Buenos Aires represents in the decade of the twentieth and thirtieth years of the twentieth century an aerea where many different factors, brought by the Industrial Revolution, politics and modern progress, are interfusing. The capital city is becoming a megapolis and that's why the character of the suburb, intervening in the argentinian pampa, is changing too. It is becoming rare to see there the original argentinian type called gaucho or compadre, on the contrary, the number of immigrants, especially from Italy, is increasing. The immigration is putting the finishing touches to the social structure but it is also modifying some of the argentinian cultural traits, for example the tango. Two great argentinian essayists, Ezequiel Martínez Estrada and Jorge Luis Borges, answer in their works to these changes. Martínez Estrada adverts with pessimism to the "problems" and "critical" situation and he is afraid of the future evolution of the city and the society which is showing certain elements of degeneration. Borges, on the other hand, is orientating himself on the past creating a microworld of the suburbs of Buenos Aires at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century. Escape from the chains of sense: towards the subversive force of the texts of F. M. Dostojevsky, F. Kafka and W. Gombrowicz

My thesis "Escape from the Chains of Sense: Towards the Subversive Force of the Texts of F. M. Dostoevsky, F. Kafka and W. Gombrowicz" focuses on the phenomenon here called the f1ight of sense. This notion challenges interpretation as a desire for order and for synthesis of the work's semantic direction, and caUs for a different reading of the work. In the introduction, using Adorno's, Deleuze's and Guattari' s concepts, I try to show that the f1ight of sense is not a final state (being without sense) but the act of its f1eeing. Inf1uenced by Barthes and his concept of the pleasure ofthe text, I call the spaces ofthe subversive force, which lets the sense and its reconstruction slip away, ruptures. They lead to a "creative rnisunderstanding" which is a ground for experirnentation. This experimentation does not refuse interpretation and its hermeneutic claim on clear understanding but suggests a different approach: a reading that looks through these ruptures and lets itself get seduced by the gestures and ornaments, which defer or dissolve meaning in the text s of Do sto evsky, Kafka and Gombrowicz. Thus experimentation is an attempt to describe how these elements work together.

Gates to the unknown: the theme of doors and gates in art from ancient times to the 20th century

The thesis Gates to the Unknown is concerned with the theme of doors and gates in art, spanning the time from ancient civilizations through the 20th century. In the times of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome funerary art prevails, with doors depicted on tombs and sarcophagi. A great deal of emphasis is placed on the biblical parables and scenes where the doors symbol occurs, containing a certain message. The scenes include for instance the Virgin Annunciate and the Last Judgement with its gates of Eden and Hell. The thesis also examines the changes in the concept of doors in the era of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism, where we meet the doors motif as a part of tombstones again. In these eras, as well as in 19th century art, the symbolism of doors slightly steps back. An individual part of the thesis follows doors and gateways in paintings of the 15-17th century Dutch masters, and their interiors full of mostly open doors that carry hidden meanings. The symbolism and a different understanding of the element of doors became widespread in 20th century art. From this period there have been selected pieces of artists such as René Magritte, 5 Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dalí, but also artwork of the Czech artists, Jakub Schikaneder and Frantińek Muzika. Ibn Sina's Hayy Ibn Yaqdhan: translation and commentary

The present study consists of two main parts, namely translation and commentary of the philosophical-mystical recital ajj ibn Jaqn (The Living, Son of the Vigilant). The author is a significant philosopher of the Islamic East Ibn Sn (980-1037), whose biography is a part of this study. Although this treatise is not his most famous work, it belongs for its strong narrative aspects, aesthetic values and depth of the symbolism to brilliant writings of classical Arabic literature. The commentary is divided into chapters that correspond to the themes contained in the treatise. The main motive represents the journey of human intellect, who is guided by the Active intellect personified in the figure of The Living, son of the Vigilant towards a higher knowledge. Once the rational soul has realized its angelic potential sets on an intelectual journey into the world of the separated forms, which is finally crowned with a vision of God. Ibn Sn presents through this symbolic story central elements of his teachings, namely the theory of intellect, psychology and epistemology, the theory of matter and form, cosmology, emanation theory, angelology ant theology. Interpenetration fine directions in selected literary works end of 19th and early 20th century - Secession tendencies and mosaic

110 RESUME The thesis is focused on the interpretation of several literary works from the turn ofthe 19th and 20th century. Selected works characterize certain elements, themes and motifs, which occur in the visual arts ofthis period. One can thus speak ofthe mutual interpenetration of literature and fine arts. This includes, for instance, the return to nature, which was meant to bring renewal and or a desire for creative originality to both - literature and Art Nouveau. Just as in Art Nouveau style, a woman appeared in literature as beautiful as a mirage, which was often displayed in two locations, as otherworldly creature - a fairy, or a femme fatale. The beginnings of Czech Art Nouveau with literature is attached to popular fairy tales, fairy-tale motifs and characters, dreaminess and lyricism. Art Nouveau ornament in the literature showed after linguistically as frequent repetition of words, themes or phonetic groups. Important in tenns ofthe interaction of literature and Art Nouveau was a magazine Volne smery, published since 1896, edited by Frantisek Xaver Salda and by artists Jan Preisler and Stanislav Sucharda, which in the first years contained, apart from modem arts, a major literature part.

In the thesis "Interaction between literature and film in Manuel Puig's novel" we attempted to present a brief research of a possible relation between literature and film in the novel "Boquitas pintadas". The objective of this work was to answer the question whether there is some kind of interaction or interrelation between these two artistic forms and how this interaction is being showed. In the first part of this work we tried to define relation between literature and film in general focusing on their diverse means of expression which can be used for representing the concrete features. In this connection we sketched the possible ways of expression and we tried to find out whether the literature and film differ intrinsically. In this part we also investigated the influence of the film on Manuel Puig's writing in general. We mentioned the literary critics and the author's opinions about whether this influence is present or not in Puig's novels, as far as the formal elements (the narrator, characters description, dialogue) as well as the thematic elements (sentimental motives, melodrama) are concerned. In the main part of this work we focused on Puig's novel "Boquitas pintadas" and the study of the artistic means of expression which had been presented in the previous part. Contemporary circus' aesthetics and poetics (from the modern circus to the current one or systematic interleaving of individual arts to create an absolute one)

This diploma thesis is focused on the research in the area of the new and the contemporary circus. The essential object of the thesis is the characteristics of the contemporary circus phenomenon, which should demonstrate its artistic independence. The analysis of typical contemporary circus aspects is implemented in nine self-contained chapters. These chapters are dedicated to the development process from the modern circus to the contemporary circus, the minute analysis of different circus arts and their particularities, the contemporary circus architecture, the circus artists' physical and acting improvement and last but not least to the human body as the cardinal instrument of contemporary circus expression. An important part of the thesis is based on the description of contemporary circus performance elements, which are practically presented on the compagnies' creative processes. Especially the last chapter contains the descritption of four different contemporary circus performances made by four different contemporary circus compagnies which come from France or francophone territories. The primary research method was searching and studying theoretical literature dedicated to the circus, interviewing circus pedagugues, artists and theorists and analysing the contemporary circus performances.

The world of Harry Potter translated into Czech and Slovak

This study provides a description of the translation techniques applied to the translation of culturally significant phenomena in the Harry Potter series into Czech and Slovak. The analysis extends to the first three boo ks of the Harry Potter series by British author J. K. Rowling and their translations into Czech and Slovak. The theoretical framework is derived from the views of Finnish scholar R. Oittinen (2000) on the translation of children's literature; the translation techniques used to analyze the translations are taken from Molina&Albir (2002). Chapter 1 discusses Harry Potter from the point of view of literary theory. It reviews the different traditions (Anglo-American, Czech, Slovak) in defining and describing fantasy literature and fantasy for children. In the Czech and Slovak literary contexts, there is a tendency to view works similar to Harry Potter as fairy tales with fantastic elements. Chapter 2 reviews the field of translation studies with respect to translation of children's literature.
