Russian picaresque novel

One of the types of the novel genre is a picaresque novel which became very fashionable in Europe at the end of the 16th century. This form originated in Spain from where it spread to other European countries. Due to different developement in Russian literature, novel and thus also the picaresque novel appeared later. However, some picaresque features can be found in the "stories from life" from the 17ili century. Novel, which started to be developed in Russia at the beginning of the 19th century and reached its peak already in the middle of this century, is influenced by the traditional Russian genres (stories from life, chozenija, hagiography), a branch of moral-picaresque literature and also by the novel Gil Blas written by the French novelist and playwright Alain-Rene Lesage. The most important work of 'Gil-Blas-like' type is the Russian Gil Blas written by Vasilij Trofimovich Narezny who was inspired by the French novel. Picaresque novel was also reflected in the work of Faddei Venediktovich Bulgarin whose scandalous novel Ivan Vyzighin started a heated debate about trash literature that was joined also by Pushkin. Arkadij Averchenko's humoristic proses

The thesis consists of an analysis of two selected humoristic stories by A. T. Averchenko and a critical discussion of their translations. The aim of the thesis is to compare two relatively new translations of the stories by Alena Moravkova (translation from 1998) and Libor Dvorak (translation from 2005). The attention is mainly given to the means of expressivity in the stories, analysed first in the original and then in the selected translations. The second chapter is devoted to the life and work of A. T. Avercenko. The third chapter is theoretical and focuses on the means of expressivity in colloquial Russian. The following chapters of the thesis draw on theoretical conclusions made in the theoretical chapter. The fourth chapter analyses the original text of the story A Stone on the Neck with a special focus upon the lexical, syntactical and morphological levels of expressivity used in the story. An attention is also given to the sources of humour in the story. The fifth and sixth chapter deal with the translations by A. Moravkova and L. Dvorak respectively. Lost in Translation. What Can(not) Get Lost from Milan Kundera's Pen on the Way to the Big Screen.

The aim of the present diploma thesis is to compare the literary original of the Milan Kundera´s story ?Já, truchlivý bůh? with its script and film adaptation. The thesis observes variations and changes of separate layers, their shifts or even their disappearance and creation. In addition, it focuses on other period documentation which is closely related to the script and the film ?Já, truchlivý bůh?. Furthermore, period newspaper was very important for the analysis and the result of this diploma thesis. An internal part of the present thesis is also an excursion to the social-historic background in which the script and the film were created, together with memories of the director Antonín Kachlík, the actor Pavel Landovský and the actress Jiřina Jirásková.

She was girl-graduate of Czech Pedagogium (the school for education of teachers) then she function in Prague´s schools. She was literal activ, wrote stories for children, textbooks, she is authoress of Family memories and many of studies of Božena Němcová. She traveled around the Europe, wrote detailed itinerary and published her experiences in journals.

Reading competences of adolescents

Theoretical part of the theses is a compilation of knowledge about reading competence, about most important reader's theories and theory of fiction worlds. At the background of results from research on reading of pubescents and adults basic characteristics of adolescent reading were determinated. 3 cirtuits for internal division of reading competence were built for the needs of the theses and it was realized on interpretation of the fantastic story "The night face-up", which was written by Julio Cortazár and which was used as a initial text for literary questionnaire. In the practical part of theses a mixed research was made. Qualitative methods of research came to light in open questions (pointed at first phase at whole aesthetic judgement and at second phase at various aspects of the piece of work) engaged in the framework of literary questionnaire. Quantitative methods of the research consisted in verification of hypotheses specified by the study of literature and in form of sorting of respondents' answers to the various levels of reading competence determinated in advance. Heroes in the colors of Zhang Yimou

Heroes in the colors of Zhang Yimou is mostly about three movies from famous director Zhang Yimou. Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower are epic movies which combine martial arts with drama and philosophy. Stories are amplified and influenced by color stylization. In Hero colors support construction of the movie. Silver and gold are figting against each other in Curse of the Golden Flower and House of the Flying daggers is shot in colors of nature. My work also looks into symbols of those colors and tries to find out whether those symbols are understandable for European as well as for Chinese audience and how European audience can profit from Zhang Yimou´s interpretation of the world.

Stage design of Josef Svoboda in the Theatre and Grand opera of 5th May

Josef Svoboda is one of the few stage setters well known in the Czech Republic and also abroad whose work is appreciated by general cultural public. He and also František Tröster and Vlastislav Hofman brought themselves to theatergoers' notice. Laterna Magika audience can still be fascinated by his creative invention and his visual and technical talent (light experiments and usage of two-way mirrors). Josef Svoboda is known mainly as a Laterna Magica stage setter. Not many people know that he started his career in opera-house Velká opera 5. května. He worked here as a very young, beginning artist till the year 1948 when the theater was canceled. He was a stage setting director. He met here a group of young and creative actors and directors and together they created a unique type of a theater which changed established opera stereotypes. Josef Svoboda participated in this process by creating novel stage settings, always in accordance with the style of each inscenation. He always started from the essence of the story, for example in production Hoffmanovy povídky, Prodaná nevěsta, Tosca (still could be seen in the original form in Státní opera) and Výlety pana Broučka. Luigi Pirandello and Sicily

The introduction familiarizes us with basic characteristics of Sicily and its inhabitants, as well as biographical facts regarding Luigi Pirandello's period of life during which he lived there. Subsequently, based on analysis of author's selected writings, we try to find out to what extent has Pirandello's work been influenced by the Sicilian environment, history, inhabitants and veristic themes. For the analysis we will make use of three stories (Certificate, Amphora, Pensaci, Giacomino!), two plays (Il berretto a sonagli, Liolà) and the novel I vecchi e i giovani. Women characters in Willa Cather's fiction as a reflection of U.S. women's rights history

Willa Cather (1873-1947) is nowadays regarded as one of the most important U.S. writers, and the volume of critical works, articles and dissertations devoted to her as a person and an artist is immense. One of the problematic relationship has always been, as can be seen from a number of critical essays and books, between Cather and U.S. feminists. The feminists would have liked to include Cather, as an feminist writer, into their group of the first-rate, woman-authored "female canon", however, such intent brought about an important question. Is it possible to regard Willa Cather as a feminist, considering her attacks on other women-writers, and her negative attitude towards the organized women's rights movement? This work's objective is to explore the background of Cather and organized women's rights movement's bizarre relationship, and answer the question above. To find out if Cather's work with its strong heroines empowered or weakened women in general, her novels and stories, rather then facts and assumption about her personal life, are used. The relevant parts of the plots from Cather's fiction are put into the historical perspective of the contemporary U.S. laws, showing that although Cather created exceptional woman characters, she let them deal with the same conditions and problems other...
