Seidl, Lukáš ; Provecho López, Juan Ignacio (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
Pope John Paul II who led the Roman Catholic Church in the period of 1978-2005 is seen as one of the most influential top officials of this religious institution. His activity in the area of media communication was very conspicuous and has been considered to be revolutionary in many respects until today. Among other things, John Paul II directly encouraged the faithful to actively join the process of media communication, broadening media awareness, the rise of Church media channels as well as their active cooperation with public service or commercial media. Personally, he was very popular among the journalists. This master thesis under the title "Kamarádi na cestách": mediální image papeže Jana Pavla II. a jeho poselství hromadným sdělovacím prostředkům ("Friends in the Travels": The Media Image of the Pope John Paul II and His Message to the Mass Media)" attempts to track the approach of the Holy Father to mass media; his active use of mass media; observations addressed to media content creators as well as their target audience; as well as to analyse factors leading to the Pope's success in the field of media communication and his positively perceived media image. Benedictine Convent of St. Gabriel at Prague Smíchov
Wagner, David ; Foltýn, Dušan (advisor) ; Těšínská Lomičková, Radka (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the history of Saint Gabriel's Benedictine nunnery at Smíchov, which made a part of beuron congregation. I focus on a few disputable issues, which haven't been sufficiently solved so far and often have been neglected by Czech literature. The crucial question is, why exactly did the nuns have to leave the monastery. To provide an answer to this problem I had to perform a thorough study of the Beuron phenomenon in the context of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the twentieth century, and, above all, I had to scrutinize the background of particular nuns. In this work, among other, I come to a conclusion that the reason for the nuns' departure, as well as for the overall specificity of the nunnery / monastery, was an unusual combination of extreme catholicism, German nationalism and their mostly aristocratic background. All the three aspects were in disagreement with the values acknowledged by the newly-emerged state of Czechoslovakia, whose apparatus didn't understand or didn't want to understand the mentality of the nuns and their commitments. This situation eventually culminates by the nuns moving out of the country and the building being sold to the Ministry of posts and telegraphs, with a real burden: a regular mass should be held in the church, which by...

Švejdová, Amália ; Schwarz, Jiří (advisor) ; Skuhrovec, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor thesis Economics of Religion: Analysis of Contributions in the Roman Catholic Church in the Czech Republic focuses on economics of religion in the enviroment of the Czech republic and especially the case of the Roman Catholic Church. The main aim of the thesis is to analyze the situation of the religious market and the role and position of the Roman Catholic Church within it, in regards to participation in religious institutions, voluntary donations etc. By studying the relationship between the state and church and it's determined financing system it is possible to set the model for the degree of financial participation of the church's members (voluntary contributions). By using a regression analysis, a hypothesis is tested on specific empirical data - the amount of voluntary contributions, (un)employment, age, size of the church, and percentage of women in the population.

Šulcová, Jana ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Gerbery, Juraj (referee)
The thesis "Medial muck-raking of sexual affairs in the Church in Czech press in spring 2010" through the use of medial ruts, stereotypes and logic, inquires into medial texts from the springtime 2010, which have referenced to sexual affairs in Catholic Church. Based on medial theories (gatekeeping, social construction of reality, agenda setting etc.) the thesis follows up the reflection of the theme and specifics of media discourse. This view is complemented with interviews with members of the Church, which give the thesis out-of- media extent. Qualitative part of the thesis takes sexual affairs in Church as illustrative theme, which is meant in connection with the Roman Catholic Church reflected by Czech media. The thesis also attempts to generalize the actual medial reflection of the Church on the background of current medial trends. It tries to offer a way how to improve the relationship between two part of culture - media and the Roman Catholic Church. To put the thesis into context it will be provided with information about history of the Roman Catolic Church and relationship of Czech society to matters of the church, because it determinates perception of medial news about this theme.
Ordo Cisterciensis during the First Czechoslovak Republic. The transformations of Cistercian monasteries in Czechoslovakia in light of the reports for the General Chapter of the order
TALÍŘ, František
The thesis aims to depict the life of Cistercians during the First Czechoslovak Republic. To put it into context, the first chapter evaluates the situation of the Catholic Church as a whole, of which religious orders and congregations have been an inseparable part. During the First Czechoslovak Republic, Cistercian monasteries, which are discussed in the thesis, were united in the Congregation of the Most Pure Heart of Mary. The Congregation consisted of three abbeys in Czechoslovakia, two abbeys in Saxony, and a newly established priory in Denmark. The purpose of the thesis is to describe the material and personal conditions in the monasteries, the formation and structure of the congregation, and the daily life of monks. The thesis also seeks to answer the question if a male contemplative order, such as Cistercians, could have found its place in a democratic society of the First Republic. Reports written for chapters of the congregation as well as the whole order were used as the main source. In them, the superiors described not only the conditions and discipline in their monasteries, but also the activities of the monks and nuns among local inhabitants. The thesis is particularly focused on the Abbey of Vyšší Brod, which was located in an area inhabited predominantly by German-speaking population. The issue of coexistence of both nationalities and the role the monastery played in it is illustrated by drawing on the contemporaneous press.
