Gene Therapy and the Evolution of Cancer Treatment
Douglas, James Joshua ; Černá, Marie (advisor)
The continued understanding of gene structure, function and how its product interacts in the human body has lead to new wave of ideas on cancer therapy. Gene therapy, which 20 years ago was just a dream is now a very real possibility and alternative to the conventional treatments. Three new methods of utilizing alternative gene structure and manipulating the body's response to induce a tumor effect are presented here. Immunotherapy is the induction of the human immune system against an unwanted antigen. Viral oncolysis is the utilization and manipulation of natural human pathogens against tumor cells. Gene transfer is the addition of deletion of vital genes responsible for cell growth and apoptosis.

Rethinking the Animal: Post-Humanist Tendencies in (Post) Modern Literature
Gridneva, Yana ; Vichnar, David (advisor) ; Procházka, Martin (referee)
This thesis posits post-humanism as a philosophy that engages directly with the problem of anthropocentrism and is concerned primarily with the metaphysics of subjectivity. It studies five literary texts (James Joyce's Ulysses, Virginia Woolf's Flush, Djuna Barnes' Nightwood, Brigid Brophy's Hackenfeller's Ape and J.M. Coetzee's Elizabeth Costello: Eight Lessons) that challenge the humanistic or classical subject through critical engagement with what this subject traditionally saw as its antithesis - the animal. These texts contest various fixed assumptions about animality and disrupt the status-quo of the human. Breaking with the tradition that treats animals exclusively as a metaphor for the human, they attempt to see and understand animality outside the framework of anthropocentric suppositions. This project aims to describe the strategies these texts employ to conceptualize animality as well as the methods they apply to delineate its subversive potential and to disrupt the human- animal binary. Its theoretical framework combines the work of thinkers belonging to the new but thriving field of Animal Studies with the ideas of Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. It is this project's great ambition to contribute towards the development of new post- humanist ethics defined by its...

Reverse parallel configuration manager
Doležal, Petr ; Yaghob, Jakub (advisor) ; Adámek, Jiří (referee)
Existing tools for build and configuration management of software projects often suffer from various drawbacks, the typical problems include, for example, a complicated notation of a project's configuration or difficulties with the portability of a configuration description between various platforms. This work analyses the advantages and disadvantages of the approaches used by existing implementations and it proposes the solution that is based on merging the well-established and interesting ideas of various existing solutions. An important part of the work is the implementation of a fully functional program according to the proposed design, which allows to test the solution in practice. The goal of the implementation is to avoid the disadvantages of existing similar programs while keeping their advantages.

Model vznášející se buňky napodobuje realisticky odezvu síla-deformace během protahování a stlačování buňky a obě odezvy ilustrují nelineární nárůst tuhosti s růstem mechanického zatížení.

Dream of Great France in Transatlantic Perspective
Paggio, Viktor ; Dubský, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Nechvátal, Martin (referee)
This text focuses on the French self-peception in the modern world. French consider their concept of state and citizenship universal, as Americans do. But the two universalisms are built on a different basis in terms of religion, language and many other aspects. I analyze the clash of the two visions of the world and the French reactions to the American rise to power in the 20th century.
