NEWSPAPER OF TESIN (analysis of the sixth year of the edition)
Franková, Barbora ; Zilynskyj, Bohdan (advisor) ; Hnilica, Jiří (referee)
In my dissertation I focused on the sample analysis of the sixth year of the edition of the Noviny Těšínské (the Newspaper of Tesin) which had been published from December 1899 to the end of November 1900 and how the newspaper reflected events and relationships not only in the region of Tesin, but also outside of it. The core of my dissertation are relationships among three national communities living together in the region at that time-the Czechs, Poles and Germans (one of the chapters also monitors the Jewish religion community and the local people's attitude to it). Reciprocal conflicts among the above mentioned national communities appeared in all areas of everyday life - in education, economy, language, matters, politics, in the relationship to the monarchy and also to events happening in the world. The region of the Tesin was a part of one of the Crown lands - Silesia. In spite of that fact the newspaper wasn't restricted only to the events from this Crown land but also the information from other territory of the Czech Crown kingdom, news from the Austrian-Hungary Empire and even from all the world can be met there. Reading up the sixth year of the Noviny Tešínské edition leads to the formation of a compacted idea how the newspaper's authors and all population in this region percepted the situation...

Jirsová, Klára ; Poláčková, Věra (referee) ; Kremličková, Marta (advisor)
"Education of bilingual children in preschool years" is an academic paper concerning the educational and psychological aspects in the optimal education of bilingual children and children attending nurseries in a foreign language. This kind of education originates from the mental and emotional needs of preschool children. The theoretical section concerns the psychological development of children with an emphasis on language and communication. There is the unique situation of the bilingual person in a social, cultural and political context, then there are concrete methods of bringing up a child in a bilingual family and their doubts about bilingualism. The paper desribes the eduational functions of Czech and foreign (specifically English) language nurseries and the methods of teaching preschool children. The teaching of a foreign language in nurseries is preparation for future learning of foreign languages and the challenge of exploring other cultures. The empirical section of the paper describes the results of a small inquiry, realised by observing children in one Czech and two English nurseries. It was found that in some "English nurseries" the learning of language was overemphasised to the prejudice of other psychological needs of some children. It concerned the children who had a different first language...

The historical roots of Indian federalism (1905-1956)
Holman, Jaroslav ; Říchová, Blanka (advisor) ; Strnad, Jaroslav (referee) ; Baar, Vladimír (referee)
The dissertation deals with historical roots of the Indian federalism. It focuses on the the first six decades of the twentieth century. At the beginning of this period India was a colonial realm (Indian Empire) consisting of the provinces of British India on one hand and the princely states on the other. At the end of the period, though deprived of the territories that had gine to Pakistan, India was a sovereign federal republic consisting of union states, the boundaries of which were mostly determined according to the "linguistic" principle. The year 1905, set as a starting point in the title ofthe study, brought the partition ofBengal (politically the most important province of British India), resulting in widespread protests all over India and in radicalization of Indian nationalism. It also strengthened autonomist tendenci es and thus provided a strong impetus to the federal idea. The final year of the period, set in the title of the study, brought the enactment of the States Reorganization Act, 1956, which finalised the formation of all main features of the Indian federal system. From the institutional point of view, the system has not been changed in any significant aspect since. India through this Act became a trne "ethno-federation" or "ethno-federal" state. In the author' s view a solid basis was...

Rabe, Nina ; Váňová, Miroslava (referee) ; Mazáčová, Nataša (advisor)
In the theoretical part of my thesis I address the issue of minorities and the members of minorities and their specific educational needs. I share the experience I gained at the international school, Riverside School, where I performed my practical teaching and taught for a further semester. I draw upon the variety of experiences of teachers and pupils. I describe the situation regarding the education of foreign children in the Czech Republic and at the end of the theoretical part I outline the situation in the United States of America. In the empirical part I attempt to determine by means of a questionnaire survey to what extent teachers and schools are prepared for their work with foreigners, whether they have a support system and whether they consider the phenomenon of foreign children at Czech schools to be a problem. In the end I compare the situation at Czech schools with the situation at schools in the USA.
