Islamophobia and Czech public space. Reception of cartoon affair and the murder of Theo Van Gogh.

In the theoretical part of the thesis student will define the concept of Islamophobia on the basis of foreign and Czech literature. His starting point will be, inter alia, Pavel Barša's concept of the "new xenophobia" as well as a comparison between the historical anti-Semitism and contemporary Islamophobia by Matti Bunzl at the same time reflecting the arguments of critics of the concept, as they were presented by Robin Richardson. Following will be a discursive analysis of two Czech media resources: webportal Eurabia, which is the main representative of the Czech Islamophobic rhetoric and a leading newspaper Mladá Fronta Dnes. The analysis will monitor the ways in which the Mohamed cartoons controversy was thematized, applied characteristics and means of expression. At the same time the author will confront his analysis to more general issues stemming from the dialogue with theoretical conceptualizations of Islamophobia: Can we define the analyzed sources' language as Islamophobic? Does Islamophobia actually falls into the definition of "new xenophobia", or is it only a successor of "old" xenophobia?

Media image of the Soviet Union in selected Communist and Christian Democratic weeklies during the Third Czechoslovak Republic

The paper deals with selected aspects of the media image of the Soviet Union during the Third Czechoslovak Republic. Its aim is to analyze the mechanisms of media image construction in two journals of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and in two weeklies of the Czechoslovak People's Party. Partial aim represents an effort to compare the resemblance of discourse of the USSR between Communist and Christian Democratic journals and then effort to capture eventual changes of the discourse image during the analyzed period. To achieve the objective we use method of critical discourse analysis inspired by the design from the pen of J. P. Gee. The first part presents historiographical outline of specific socio-political conditions of the Third Republic. Second, theoretical and methodological chapter provides an overview of the conceptual framework embedding that is used for the text analysis. The research part identifies that some discursive aspects of the image of the USSR in Communist and Christian Democratic conception seem to be diversifying over time, others are different from the outset. Why Did Voucher Privatization Occur?

In this paper I try to analyze all circumstances and threads that led to voucher privatization. I try to analyze factual historical events like for example certain motions in the Civic Forum (Czech: Občanské fórum) within the frame of corporate processes. I observe the shift of power between the majority of citizens and elite and question the legitimity of decisions the leaders of the revolutionary movements make. The power shifting from an individual onto the society served me as an indicator for searching the relations that could had led to the voucher privatization. I try to understand the circle of disidents around Václav Havel and the circle of reformists around Václav Klaus from the sociological perspective and try to apprehend these from tin the light of their organization and opinion coherence. Ideological data of these two groups are compared with the meaning of the public; moreover, I do not restrict myself just to the time after the revolution. I pay attention also to the pre - revolutionary roots of certain social circumstances that influenced the public. I try to find the continuity between the time before the revolution, during the revolution and after the revolution. Slovak Political Parties in the First Czechoslovak Republic : Analysis of the Program Goals

The bachelor thesis deals with political parties, which operated in the Slovak during the first Czechoslovak Republic. The aim is to analyze the political programs of the parties, namely the programs of Republikánská strana zemědělského a malorolnického lidu, Československá sociálně-demokratická strana dělnická, Komunistická strana Československá, Hlinkova slovenská ľudová strana and Slovenská národná strana. I'm going to analyze how particular requirements, which relate to Slovakia, modified over time, disappeared and appeared in connection with the historical context. I am going to apply the discourse analysis as a research method. I am going to use formal political programs, historical documents as secondary sources and other publications dedicated to this historical period. The main research question will primarily concerned with issues of institutional organizations, competences, government structures, Czechoslovakism or autonomous requirements. I will search for all terms related to these topics in political programs. I will be interested in issues relating to the Slovak question. I will focus on the differences between Slovak and countrywide's political parties. The data will be evaluated and compared to each other in the conclusion.

The ideal of women beauty before and after 1989 - discourse analysis of Vlasta magazine

The thesis interprets the ideal of women beauty before and after 1989 in terms of sociological and culture discourse in Vlasta magazine. The key premise of the thesis is the claim that ideal of women beauty differs before and after 1989. It is possible to expect influence of politic system, social structure and culture forms on discourse of women beauty. Character of this thesis is theoretically-empiric. The sociologic gender theory serves as the frame for chosen topic. Research is based on analysis of discourse of women beauty in Vlasta magazine in 1975 and 2005. The goal of overall analysis is to provide series of detailed analysis which describe general magazine topics and role of the magazine in certain historical period beside discourse of beauty. I have chosen qualitative sociological method called discursive analysis for my thesis. Ambition of the thesis is to analyze one specific social discourse and introduce all key social, historical and culture aspects which can influence the discourse and use Vlasta magazine as its concrete case. Czech media approach toward the implementation of state school-leaving examination 2010 (bias analysis)

The bachelor thesis called "Czech media approach toward the implementation of state school-leaving examination 2010 (bias analysis) comprehends attitudes of the selected periodicals (dailies Právo, Mladá fronta DNES and Lidové noviny; magazines Reflex and Respekt) towards the question of state school-leaving examination implementation on Czech high schools. Since we are talking about education, with no doubts affecting marginal public proportion, media devoted a lot of space to this issue as to one of the most discussed topics within the year 2010. The bachelor thesis endeavour is addressed to research whether in these concrete attitudes of the given periodicals might be observed bias marks in the way of information presenting. There will be two various methods applied - quantitative content analysis and discourse analysis. Background data for both these methods will constitute of articles issued in the above mentioned periodicals during October 2010 (thus at a time when test run for the state school-leaving examinations was held). Comparison of Karmapas statements by critical discourse analysis in the light of postmaterialistic values concept defined by Inglehard

This dissertation is mainly focused on schism in the Karma-kagjü school. The death of the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje († 1981), the head of Kagjüpa plunged Karma-kagjü school to inner struggle for power and prestige. Enmity was making progress slowly and hiddenly. Situation graded in clandestine fashion and culminated in 1992 when Ogyen Trinley Dorje was enthroned in Tibet as 17th Karmapa. Some of the regents had doubt about him being the Karmapa and consequently enthroned their own candidate for 17th Karmapa. This act entirely divided the Karma-kagjü school. The primary motive and goal of my dissertation is to find presence of materialistic or postmaterialistic values defined by Ronald Inglehart (Inglehart 1997) in interviews given by 17th Karmapas. I'm looking for difference in values and my methodical instrument is critical discourse analysis. After comparison of interviews of both 17th Karmapas I find the difference in their values. My conclusion is that when Ogyen Trinley Dorje has more materialistic values than Trinley Thaye Dorje. Development of professional and public policy discourse in certain documents of antidrug policy in the Czech Republic

This paper deals with a development of certain aspects of discourse between authors of technical and policy science papers pertaining to antidrug policies in time period of 1993 - 2010. The basic question of my research is: What kind of discourse has been taking place among the authors of these documents? I try to asses whether this discourse has changed over the years and how. I analyze those selected documents that were essential for establishing of antidrug policy and development this policy has undergone from the beginning until now. My paper examines progress and changes in labeling the problem itself, labeling of actual users and approach to proposed solutions. Analysis of content focuses on hidden meanings in the language used and uncovers attitudes and opinions of the authors in regard of drug problem. My study also describes the development of antidrug policy in Czech Republic during the above mentioned period and in this context describes and labels those aspects of system of values that have served as basis for key documents of antidrug policy. As a theoretical framework I have chosen a theory based on premiss that language used by authors of the documents also has impact on the situation of the actual users themselves.

Czech Political Parties and the European Union between 1996 and 2009

The Rigorous's thesis Czech Political Parties and the European Union between 1996 and 2009 presents how the Czech political parties (ODS, CSSD, KSCM and KDU-CSL) percieved the European Union and the role of the Czech Republic in the EU in the given period. The thesis departs from both basic constructivist principles and the concept of polity ideas. Further, it presents four ideal types of political system: Federal State, Intergovernmental Cooperation, Economic Community and Network. Then, looking at the individual political parties' perspective on selected components of polity ideas the thesis assigns the political parties to the ideal types.
