"The reception of Robert Paxton's book La France de Vichy by French press and French academic community"

The importance of EU as an external factor on democratic consolidation. The cases of the Czech Republic and Slovakia
Hilleren, Ann Katrin ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Krausz Hladká, Malvína (referee)
The breakdown of communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe has offered scholars in the field of transition and regime change theory, and comparative politics in general, a major opportunity to test out former theories, but also formulate new ones. Obviously, no theory is alone applicable to the complexity of the transitions. There is a variety of cases, each with distinct developments before, during and after the transition to democracy has been completed. Some common features are still possible to extract when studying regime change in a region. As for Central and Eastern Europe, one of the most outstanding characteristics of the transition to democracy has been the visibility and importance of external factors. Previously the view was held that external factors were essentially secondary to domestic processes of regime change. The studies on Central and Eastern Europe carried out the last 15 years might show another picture, and that leads us to the core of this paper. How important have the external factors been? After providing the reader with some relevant theories on democracy and démocratisation, the focus is turned to the examination of external influences on transition in this region. In order to narrow down the complexity of the subject, the European Union has been chosen as the variable to...

Engelbert Dollfuss and the Central Europe 1932-1933
Šepták, Miroslav ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Horčička, Václav (referee)
The diploma paper which I was elaborating is focused on the first year of the governance Austrian chancellor Engelbert Doll fuss. Data of that governance were taken from unpublished sources of Czech, Austrian and German province as well as from published Czech, Austrian and German sources. In area of economy he decided to apply the strict deflation policy as a result of big economic depression. Business strategy of such country led to the only one effort - to sign new business agreements established on preferential base. At the beginning of Dollfuss's governance there existed a possibility of big coalition with social democrats but step by step the ideological difference was increasing. The more threat was coming from Nazism the more isolated Austrian policy turned. The chancellor was trying to strengthen political power of parliamentary majority which was very weak. Unsuccessfully. This non success made him put his mind to the alternative form of regime. The piece of luck helped him to get out from unpleasant situation. He took advantage of formal lack of Austrian pluralism and was continually setting up authoritative regime. In area of foreign policy he reduced options of Danube's federation as well as orientation to France because he didn't consider these possibilities profitable for Austria. He had...

Krejčová, Jaroslava ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Moravcová, Dagmar (referee)
The collapse of the communist regime in German Democratic republic caused factual loss of legitimacy of the republic as a whole. The events of 1989 and 1990 have brought the end of separation of both German states. The both parts of Germany were unified on October 3rd, 1990, but internal unity of the new state is 15 years later still far from reality. Two undemocratic regimes, one following another, interrupted traditional affiliations between voters and political parties hardly. New period of the German party system has started. Although the influence of the West German parties on constitution of the democratic East German party system was dominant, there has established unique party system with own specifics. The most measurable diversity of the East German party system is the presence of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS). This communist successor party has been successful in fast every elections since German Unification, last time she won over the quarter of East German votes. Thanks to the association with the new West German left party, called Electoral Alternative Work and Social Justice (WASG), the Left party/PDS has won 54 seats in the 16th Bundestag. Few months afterwards there was built a Great Coalition of Christian democrats (CDU/CSU) and social democrats (SPD), which in its consequence...
