Aesthetization of design
KLIMT, Michal
The student will focus on domination of aesthetic parts in design. This tendency is reflected by Czech colloquial terms too. The word "dizajnový" is used for a nice thing in contemporary language. There is a current state of design where aesthetic parts of design exceed practical parts. This reductional level is used and strengthened by massmedia (Designboom, Wallpaper etc.) and art galleries (e.g. DOX, GASK in the Czech Republic and Guggenhem museum and MoMA in foreign countries). It looks that the aim of design is beautification of things. That is thanks to the rising influence of aesthetics in vast majority fields of design. But isn´t the consequence of this, simplifying or depreciation of the meaning of the term design?

In this work, we analyze selected phrases in Karel Poláček's works, i.e. mainly his Žurnalistický slovník and his novels Bylo nás pět and Muži v ofsajdu. At the beginning, we define the conception of a phrase and in connection to than, we define the specificity of the author's prose. Then follows the analysis of the misuse of language in totalitarian regimes and journalism. Finally, we retrieve the information on the frequency of the actual use of the selected expressions in today's media with the help of Anopress.

Interpreting 19th and 20th century Czech literary texts, it shows the main transformations of this concept, from the idea of language frontier (dominating in the 19th century) to representation of the border territory (in the 20th century) Underscoring the cultural and historical conditionality of the frontier as a social institution, and the influence of cartography for its socialization, the study focuses on the spatial and semiotic consequences of these transformations.

Bilingualism on Social Networks: The Use of Czech, English and other languages among Czech users of Facebook
Pilzová, Zuzana ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The main goal of this thesis is to find and describe the evidence of bilingual communication of English language among Czech users of the social network Facebook. A qualitative method of both text document and semi-structured interviews with six active users was used to describe the type of bilingualism which occurs in the social media environment, in what situations and what is the user's motivation behind it. Therefore the main theoretical approaches I focus on are bilingualism and its place in the Czech Republic and the role of the English language in this socio-culture context. Furthermore I study the communication in an online environment: what are the specifications and what role does the CMC (computer-mediated-communication) play in relationship of the language and the user. Finally, I search for previous studies in the field of online bilingualism, social media preferably. The results show not only the Czech users are well situated within the discourse of English as (online) lingua franca, moreover they seem to be very active in self-imposed code-switching into the English language. The data acquired through the interviews helped to identify bilingualism occurs on both levels of code-switching and code-mixing. Additionally, Anglicism's in the Czech language were reported widely.

The position of the tabloid press in Switzerland
Kadaníková, Zuzana ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The thesis "Position of the tabloid press in Switzerland on the example of Blick" deals with the position of tabloid press in general as well as with its development in Switzerland. There is a characteristic of the tabloid press and the necessary economical and social circumstances. The tabloid press is described from the point of view of its signs, form and the way it communicates with the audience. The thesis also describes the history and natural conditions of Switzerland that determinate the development of the press. Switzerland is the country with four official languages that might be regarded as an obstruction to the print media (for example Italian is spoken only by 6.5% of the total 7.785.000 population) on the other hand there is a potential of specialized audience and therefore custom made titles. The third chapter deals with the history of tabloid press in Switzerland on the example of the publishing house Ringier. The tabloid daily Blick has been a part of its portfolio since 1959 (circulation 214.880, audience according to Ringier 628.000). Ringier is one of the most powerful players on the media scene of Switzerland. The last chapter describes the general trend of the change of media towards tabloid type, the trend is supported by the Swiss media quality research done at Universität Zürich.

Immigration within the European Union by Eyes of Czechs Living in Portugal.
SOUČKOVÁ, Michaela
This diploma thesis is focused on a contemporary topic which has been broadly discussed in media and common Czech society. The main objective is a qualitative probe into lives of Czech nationals living in Portugal, and to determine the problems Czechs faced trying to adapt to living in a new country. It also seeks to determine the hallmarks of acceptance by the host country from the perspective of Czechs. The first part of the hypothesis discusses the actual progression of migration in the European Union. It also describes migration theories and defines landmarks in the history of immigrationto Portugal. The other chapters are focused on immigration and integration politics in the European Union as a whole and in Portugal specifically. The thesis also described the role of programme Eures and the ACIDI organization. The thesis also details social security coordination for migrants within the European Union and within Portugal. The last chapter outlines the theme of expatriate associations. The theoretical part of diploma thesis is based mainly on professional Czech and foreign publication sources as well as internet sources. The second, practical part defines the target and research questions which are as follows: Which qualitative problems did Czechs living in Portugal face during the process of adaptation to portuguese society? What are the hallmarks of cultural acceptance by the host country from the Czech perspective? The data was obtained through the method of semi- structured interviews. The method of "captured clusters" was chosen for data evaluation while the "searched clusters" were processed into charts for charity. The discussions seeks answers on research questions by searched clusters and compares it with information in professional academic literature. The discussion cites direct responses from comunication partners to describe and approximate the life of Czechs living in Portugal. The research revealed that for Czechs trying to adapt to portuguese society, the biggest obstaclewas the difficulty of the portuguese language. A low level of competence in portuguese made it difficultto deal with administrative processes in state offices and other state institutions. It also complicated their entry and movement in labor market. However, the research determined that Czechs generally become accustomed to the cultural particularities of portuguese society, even if they still find distinct individual differences. The research showed that it was the opinion of most czechs´s that the portuguese tend to judge many immigrants based on prejudices and pre-conceived notions.

Military Conflicts in Contemporary Art
Weinbergerová, Lenka ; Rakušanová, Marie (advisor) ; Kukurová, Lenka (referee)
The military conflicts in contemporary art This work is trying to examine the represantation of the war by contemporary artis. Its focus is on the anti-war art, which is observed from its beginning to today. The depiction of the theme of the war has many ways. There are artists whose inspiration come from their interest in political, social or feminist activism and in their art works they think out diffrent questions which refer to more war conflicts. In their work they use own language to their imagery of such horrible atrocities taking place all over the world. And so this work is trying to describe their art works not according to the historical global or local conflict but according to some topics, that are questioning how the artists present the horrors of war, how are the artists inspired by the media like television or press and how do they depict the victims, how their works could help to pay attention on and to prevent other cruelties and atrocities of war through their works and collective colaboratin which is unfortunately not so operated nowadays as it was for example during the Vietnam war.
