Native Art as a Source of Cultural Memory. Case Study of Māori Toi moko

This thesis deals with the repatriation of Toi moko (tattooed, preserved heads of Māori or Moriori origins) from overseas institutions back to the country of their origin, New Zealand. Toi moko are considered to be not only human remains but also cultural artefacts, pieces of native art, which are important for cultural reproduction. The significance of Toi moko for Māori culture is explained in accordance with Cultural Memory theory introduced to Social Sciences by the German cultural scientists and Egyptologist Jan Assmann. The aim of this work is to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the meaning of Toi moko in Māori society, to summarise its historical development, and to reflect the recent efforts of Karanga Aotearoa Repatriation Programme that is undertaken by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and funded by New Zealand Government. Tattooed and Non-tattooed as a Different World

This bachelor thesis concerns the differences between the world of tattooed and non-tattooed. The text is divided into three parts, in the theoretical part the author explains the term tattoo and presents its brief history, and other terms and theories, which relate to the following empirical part. The second part is methodology, which describes the qualitative research which took place in terms of exploration of the topic, the third part is the analysis of the data itself, which is supported with extracts of the interviews. In this part, the author separately explores the view of the people on themselves and on the society and compares it with expert literature.

Body modifications as a cultural symbol

This master thesis focuses on body modifications, mainly tattooing. The aim is to present the tattooing in a broader context and show its link to many aspects of people's lives that was evident especially in traditional tribal societies before the colonization era. The attention is paid to the Maori culture and the Marquesas Islands because their tattoos used to have high art value and formed the inseparable part of the inhabitants' lives. At the same time it describes the up-to-date situation in the western culture, where the body modification is very popular. It also mentions the current tattoo projects happening in the Czech Republic. Information are taken from several books available in Czech, especially the work written by Martin Rychlík "Tetování, skarifikace a jiné zdobení těla" and many electronic books in English. Information about the tattoo and body art news comes from the websites where the interested people meet and write their observations and articles about the present events. The conclusion shows that body modifications and body adornments are as old as a mankind. They appear in all cultures and do not have only the aesthetic function. Czech society and change in the concept of tattooing in the medium term

Anntotation This bachelor thesis deals with the change of perception and reception of tattoo and tattooing in the Czech society over the last aproximatelly thirty years. The turning point was the socio-political revolution in 1990s. The revolution has changed the perception of tattoos in the post-socialistic society and tattooing itself. In this respect, it points to the differences between the Czech Republic and the western Europe which are influenced by dynamic development and the perception of the visual aspect of tattoo changing through time. Contemporary tattoos are confronted with tattoos made by native cultures in parts of this thesis. Such comparison answers following question: Could a tattoo be a rite of passage or a record of an event etc. even today in our culture? The bachelor thesis mentions the problem of subcultures which are sometimes characterised by specific tattoo. To the contrary, tattoo can represent an effort to express one's individuality. The thesis answers following questions: What does a tattoo mean to its holder from a time distance? What was the reason for getting it? Meaning of Tattoo in hardcore subculture

This work deals with the phenomenon of tattoo in hardcore subculture. In the theoretical part it reflects the transformation of the concept of subcultures in his historical progress, with an emphasis on the concept of style in the connection of the Center of contemporary culture Studies and post subcultural theory, especially the writing of David Muggleton. The diachronic perspective, this work also deals with the phenomenon of tattoo and its functions and meanings to it in today's society ascribed. An integral part of the theoretical part is to describe hardcore only in terms of its progress in the USA and in Czechoslovakia or Czech Republic, but also in terms of the side of music and shared ideology, which is the main key featuring to this subculture. Concepts described in the theoretical part are then used in actual research, which is conducted by using qualitative methodology. Exploration aims to describe the meanings and functions of the hardcore subculture and determine whether they are content and motivation ascribed to tattoo influenced subcultural ideologies, or whether it is primarily an expression of the contemporary individualistic discourse. Body Modification in Cyberpunk,

The rigorous thesis Body Modification in Cyberpunk, Cyberpunk in Body Modification examines the intersection of these two topics from their mutual perspectives and monitors the extent to which they influence and shape each other. In its first part, the author deals with the representation, form and role of body modification in selected works of cyberpunk literature. The issue analysis is carried out by means of combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. The author quantitatively evaluates 503 mentions of body modifications on a given sample of 7 major cyberpunk literary works, using 25 variables. The qualitative analysis, structured in 7 thematic areas, amplifies the qualitative findings. From the analysis results, the author draws definition of typical cyberpunk body modification, which she describes as invasive functional modification of the body that was created with the help of modern technologies. Based on this definition, in the second part of this rigorous thesis, the author focuses on the existing body modifications that meet these aspects. She creates 7 categories of functional cyberpunk body modifications, which she illustrates by examples. The Subculture of Tattoo - The Content Analysis of Inked Magazine

The theses named Subculture of a tattoo, Content analysis of a magazine Inked is primary focused on the nowadays phenomenon of a tattoo, there then the whole development of this social subculture. The aim of this thesis is to sum up and analyse the term of subculture, to see in detail the historical beginnings and development of tattooing, to describe functions, motivations and the reasons of an actual act of a tattoo. The main focus will be set on the American lifestyle magazine Inked. I will try to analyse this printed media, which targets on the tattoo subculture, culture itself, style and art. This thesis will characterise the magazine and will basically follow the Inked in two year time period. Which are the years 2009 and 2010, my interest is focused in this theme agenda and its development during this period of time. The researching method will then be a quantitative content analysis.
