Transformation of distribution of audiovisual content in transmedia context
Jakubisko, Jorik ; Říha, Daniel (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
We are currently witnessing the transformation of media landscape since transmedia contents affect the strategy of distributors, producers, and television broadcasters. This new phenomenon has multidisciplinary overlap, so we encounter with different interpretations and terminology in this discourse. The master thesis Transformation of distribution of audiovisual content in transmedia context has two main objectives. Its primary aim is to unify the basic terminology for media, audiovisual, and distribution discourse based on academic literature. The secondary aim is to explore the strategies of 3 largest domestic terrestrial TV broadcasters through formal analysis. The practical part is divided in 2 sections. The first one is focused on how TV stations have implemented transmedia extensions in the context of audience immersion and broadcasters branding in their distribution strategies. The second examines whether there is true transmedia content for original shows and storyworlds in their production. It is just a matter of time before these changes in distribution strategies will affect TV broadcasters. Transmedia extentions are associated with a creative process since ancient times but we could not realize their existence. Keywords transmedia, crossmedia, transmedia storytelling, convergence,...
Comparison of mortality trends in Central Europe and Baltic countries from 1970 to the present
Horník, Vojtěch ; Hulíková Tesárková, Klára (advisor) ; Burcin, Boris (referee)
Comparison of mortality trends in Central Europe and Baltic countries from 1970 to the present Abstract The aim of this thesis is to assess the most important mortality trends development in countries of Central Europe and Baltic region between 1970 and 2009. The measures used involve life expectancy at birth and life expectancy at the age of 65; besides of this, the age-specific contributions to life expectancy changes are computed according to the method of R. Pressat. The convergence and divergence tendencies among the analyzed countries and between the two regions are evaluated in this thesis as well. Main findings are, on one hand, that mortality trends are relatively similar within each of the regions. When comparing regions between each other, however, significant differences, mostly in the period between mid-1980s and mid-1990s, arise, they are attributed mostly to the influence of mortality crisis in Baltic region after the Soviet Union dissolution. Even though after 1994 mortality development was favourable in Baltic countries, they did not reach mortality level of Central Europe until 2009. Keywords: mortality, Central Europe, Baltic countries, life expectancy, decomposition, convergence, divergence
Homoploid hybrid speciation in closely related taxa of wetland plants
Píšová, Soňa ; Fér, Tomáš (advisor) ; Albach, Dirk Carl (referee) ; Koutecký, Petr (referee)
6 Summary Wetland plants share several common characters, such as clonality, wind pollination and self-compatibility that facilitate hybridization, especially in complexes of closely related taxa. In this thesis, a Sparganium erectum complex of four subspecies and 14 species of the genus Bolboschoenus were investigated to detect hybridization and verify the origins of putative hybrids. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to an introduction to hybridization, a process of great evolutionary impact, and its several general consequences, which are broadly discussed with numerous examples. In addition, an introduction to the studied taxa is provided as well as the main results of three papers that are presented and discussed herein. The second part of the thesis consists of three papers on hybridization within the Sparganium erectum aggregate (Paper I) and in the genus Bolboschoenus (Paper II, central European species; Paper III all 14 species worldwide). AFLP molecular marker analysis, sequencing of nuclear and chloroplast DNA, and genome size and morphometric analyses were applied to elucidate the genetic relationships among taxa and to confirm the suitability of morphometric characters for taxa and hybrid delimitation. The results clearly present the differentiation of individual taxa and their stable...
Convergence or Divergence: The Analysis of Economic Growth in the CIS Countries
Hakimov, Durbek ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Holub, Tomáš (referee)
This dissertation examines from a comparative perspective the growth experience for a sample of twelve countries of the former Soviet Union over the period from 1991 to 2008. Two meth- ods of econometric analysis are applied: cross-section regressions and dynamic panel data esti- mation techniques. The main focus of the study has been to empirically establish whether coun- tries in the region are converging or diverging in terms of their income per capita and to find important sources of cross-country differences which determine the shape of this process. I did not find statistically significant support for conditional convergence in any cross-section period. It is partly supported by the increased dispersion of per capita income levels during the sample period. Meanwhile, panel data fixed-effects and GMM methods provide strong support for con- ditional convergence hypothesis. The first-differenced GMM estimator indicates a rate of con- vergence of around 2 per cent a year, which is surprisingly similar to the standard cross-section findings in empirical literature. However, it could be the result of the cyclical behaviour of out- put during transition. In general, results indicate that structural transformation is not yet over in most of the countries. Therefore progress in market-oriented reforms and...
Media Convergence on the Internet - Sociodemographics of the audience and audience research
Labantová, Zuzana ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
Bibliografický záznam LABANTOVÁ, Zuzana. Mediální konvergence v prostředí internetu. Praha, 2011. 126 s. Diplomová práce (Mgr.) Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut komunikačních studií a žurnalistiky. Katedra mediálních studií. Vedoucí diplomové práce Mgr. Jaroslav Švelch Abstract Media convergence - continuous merging of media determined by new technologies development - is one of the most significant phenomenons nowadays. The theoretical portion of this thesis describes technological, economical and content aspects of convergence. It is emphasizing Henry Jenkins's definition, which characterizes convergence as change in audience behavior, their active media content consumption. This contrast between passive audience of old traditional media and active audience of convergence media is a premise of following empirical portion of the thesis. It aims to assign socio- demographic characteristics to these contradictory descriptions. Audience of MF DNES, Rádio Impuls and TV Nova are elected as representatives of traditional audience and their profile is compared with iDnes.cz, Impuls.cz and nova.cz users characteristics. Methodologically, the thesis uses a quantitative analyze of dates gained from continuous big media researches realized in the Czech Republic. The thesis focuses also on these...
Krylov Subspace Methods - Analysis and Application
Gergelits, Tomáš ; Strakoš, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Farrell, Patrick (referee) ; Herzog, Roland (referee)
Title: Krylov Subspace Methods - Analysis and Application Author: Tomáš Gergelits Department: Department of Numerical Mathematics Supervisor: prof. Ing. Zdeněk Strakoš, DrSc., Department of Numerical Mathematics Abstract: Convergence behavior of Krylov subspace methods is often studied for linear algebraic systems with symmetric positive definite matrices in terms of the condition number of the system matrix. As recalled in the first part of this thesis, their actual convergence behavior (that can be in practice also substantially affected by rounding errors) is however determined by the whole spectrum of the system matrix, and by the projections of the initial residual to the associated invariant subspaces. The core part of this thesis investigates the spectra of infinite dimensional operators −∇ · (k(x)∇) and −∇ · (K(x)∇), where k(x) is a scalar coefficient function and K(x) is a symmetric tensor function, preconditioned by the Laplace operator. Subsequently, the focus is on the eigenvalues of the matrices that arise from the discretization using conforming finite elements. Assuming continuity of K(x), it is proved that the spectrum of the preconditi- oned infinite dimensional operator is equal to the convex hull of the ranges of the diagonal function entries of Λ(x) from the spectral decomposition K(x) =...
Bloggers as professional journalists
Váňová, Veronika ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
The thesis focuses on the status of the blogosphere in traditional journalism. It defines blogs, describes their history, typology and audience, which has changed from passive recipients of media content to its active creators. The thesis depicts convergence as a process in which amateur journalists affect the institution of traditional journalism by publishing online. This gave rise to a new phenomenon, called participative journalism, which is a potential source of discrepancy between traditional and new media. The thesis voices mutual criticism and arguments from both professional journalists and bloggers. This need not prevail if these two media systems learn to live in symbiosis. The thesis further mentions the legal protection of bloggers in the Czech Republic and the democratizing potential of the blogosphere. The conducted qualitative research is based on twelve structured in-depth respondent interviews (both bloggers and editors) and focuses on the cooperation between lifestyle magazines (and newspapers) and bloggers. It examines motivations to take up the cooperation, its progress and its advantages and disadvantages. The research demonstrates that a symbiotic relationship is possible. It also discusses some notions introduced in the theoretical part of the thesis.
Convergence and Divergence of Antitrust in EU and USA after the year 2000
Opat, Daniel ; Šmejkal, Václav (advisor) ; Svobodová, Magdaléna (referee)
81 Summary This thesis focuses on predatory pricing in competition law of European Union and United states of America. The main goal of the thesis is to analyze the development of predatory pricing on the both sides of Atlantic and to show where the approach to predatory pricing is similar and where was used different perspective. The thesis is divided to three chapters. First part of first chapter describes predatory pricing in general. It supplies a complete view on basic elements of predatory pricing that were and some still are used to identify them. Second part of first chapter brings overview of the most important tests of costs and basic economic terminology, that is important for price tests. Last part introduces most important schools of competition law, that had the biggest impact on forming of approaches to predatory pricing. Second chapter deals with main milestones of development of predatory pricing in the United States. It brings chronological overview of laws and decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court, and analyses their importance for next judicial practice. End of this chapter summarizes development of predatory pricing in the USA on basis of foregoing findings. Third chapter similarly describes historically younger, but equally dynamic development of predatory pricing in European Union. At...
The influence of electronic distribution of periodicals on print journalism
Miklica, Tomáš ; Jirků, Jan (advisor) ; Čermák, Miloš (referee)
The bachelor thesis named The influence of electronic distribution of periodicals on print journalism deals with the specifics of electronic distribution, its position among other new media and its relation towards traditional media. This document focuses mainly on the question whether electronic distribution while combining principles of both internet and print journalism can influence the future of print media - its form or even existence. Other hypothesis presented by this document inspects the possibility of utilizing an electronic periodical for saving an unprofitable print version of given periodical - film monthly Svět filmu is used as an example. Both principles of electronic distribution and Svět filmu functioning are being inquired with support of depth interviews with major Czech electronic distribution services representatives and Svět filmu representatives respectively. In addition this work offers a overview of Czech electronic distribution services and examples of digital periodicals. In order to provide complete context a brief description of situation of electronic distribution in other countries is included and listed hypotheses are supplemented by interviews-based prognostic speculations concerning electronic distribution's future and impact on print distribution.
Adaptation of television to new media principles
Soukup, Norbert ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
This paper focuses on the changes in distribution of television content which emerged during the process of convergence between television and digital media. Nowadays it is possible not only to access television broadcasting online, but also to access individual programs through Video on Demand services. The precondition this topic was picked on is that the very existence of such services has a direct impact on the form of today's television broadcasting. Therefore the aim of this paper is to examine and describe alterations which can be found not only in the broadcasting itself but also in receiving of that broadcasting on television screens. The latter can be affected by the existence of HbbTV. The analysis and description of changes in broadcasting and receiving television content in Czech republic are the primary focuses of this paper.
